Half Acre Freedom of ’78 makes a July return

Half Acre Freedom of '78

Half Acre Freedom of ’78 was brought out of retirement last year, after the recipe took 5 years off.

The beer – originally brewed at Short’s Brewing in Michigan, is an India pale ale, brewed with guava. Incidentally, Half Acre touts this beer as “outlandish and crushable, channeling the effect of Ween on the brain.”

Freedom’s label depicts the brewery family crowded a porch in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. The house has a very special brewery history:

Our owner and his wife lived there first, then our head brewer and the woman who would become his wife, then another brewer and his wife and now a couple that met at Half Acre and got married. When they move out, someone else will sign the lease and continue the custom, making sure to preserve the Half Acre lineage.

Half Acre Freedom of ’78 is now available on draft and in 22 ounce bottles.

Style: IPA (w/ Guava)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft. Limited release.
Latest Return: 7/1/16

Upslope Belgian Style Blonde with Guava, brewed just for Utah

Upslope Belgian Style Blonde with Guava hits shelves in May. Don’t get too excited Upslope fans, this beer is just for the state of Utah.

You might be asking yourself, why just for Utah? Well, Utah has some very weird laws surrounding alcohol by weight. This 4% alcohol by volume beer meets those requirements. That means it cans be sold in anywhere beer and wine is sold.

…carrying scents of honeycrisp apples and champagne. It is a bright, gently carbonated beer, both light-bodied and easy drinking. The soft tropical fruit character, with a hint of white grapes imparted from the guava puree, offers a touch of complexity to the clean, bright, drinking experience of a Belgian-Style Blonde Ale.

Upslope Belgian Style Blonde with Guava is available year-round in Utah starting in May, 2016.

Style: Belgian-style Blonde Ale (w/ Guava)

Crooked Stave Petite Sour Pure Guava Rounds Out Petite Series

Crooked Stave Petite Sour Pure Guava

Crooked Stave Petite Sour Pure Guava returns to the brewery’s lineup on August 19th. The release will wrap up with brewery’s Petite Sour Series.

Crooked Stave Petite Sour Pure Guava first debuted in 750 milliliter bottles in May of 2011, and was the first commercially available beer from the brewery. For this edition, Crooked Stave used the house mixed culture to do the entire fermentation.

“The original Pure Guava was a funky beer which has shaped the face of brewing for many brewers across the US,” said Chad Yakobson, Crooked Stave Owner / Head Brewer. “We decided to revisit this beer, using our current Petite Sour recipe, but instead of adding lacto to the wort pre-yeast, we used our house sour mixed culture to do 100% of the fermentation. The result is a much more complex Petite Sour with strong notes of tropical fruit and a pleasing tartness.”

Crooked Stave Petite Sour Pure Guava will be avaiable in 375 milliliter bottles.

Style: American Wild/Sour Ale (w/ Guava. Oak Aged)
Availability: 2
Release: 8/19/15

Guava & Chardonnay Honor City Founder

Cigar City Don Gavino's Big Guava

Tampa, Florida’s rich cigar history is unlike anywhere else in the world. What you might not know, is Tampa’s guava history. That’s where the idea behind Cigar City Brewing’s Don Gavino’s Big Guava is born. Gavino came to Tampa looking for wild guava trees. The guava? Less than expected. Big Don didn’t give up. Long story short, this man and his magnificent ‘stash is the reason Ybor City exists. In his honor, Cigar City has taken their double guava ale and aged it in Chardonnay barrels.

Most Tampa residents are familiar with Vincente Martinez Thor, who along with fellow cigar factory owner Ignacio Haya turned Tampa from a sleepy fishing village into the ‘Cigar Capital of the World” which at its peak was home to 200 cigar factories producing over 700 million cigars a year. But few of Tampa’s even long-time residents are familiar with Gavino Gutierrez, the Spanish architect, surveyor and civil engineer who first came to Tampa looking for wild guava trees. The plan was to use the supply of supposedly abundant wild fruit in a new factory making marmalade and guava paste. However, the journey was not fruitful and the guava population was much smaller than expected. Gavino did not give up on Tampa however. Convinced Tampa’s natural harbor and access to Henry B. Plant’s new rail-line would make Tampa an excellent import/export hub, Gavino set about convincing his friends Thor and Haya to move their cigar factories to Tampa. They agreed and Don Gavino set about surveying 40 acres of swamp and scrub brush northeast of Tampa for “Mr. Ybor’s City”. Vincente then named Don Gavino his architect and construction foreman and he set about developing the Master Plan for what would become Ybor City, designing the system of streets and avenues and overseeing the construction of the factory and even the housing built for the factory workers. In honor of his life’s work we could think of no better name for our Double Guava Ale than Don Gavino’s Big Guava. Cheers, Gavino!

Guava Grove Ale is a Belgian ale that sees a secondary fermentation with and extended aging on Guava puree. This is an elegant beer that pairs well with white fish, mussels, fresh tropical fruits and earthy cheeses. It also makes a fine accompaniment to Guavaween festivities.
