Old Chicago & Summit Brewing Team Up

Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom is a staple out west. The restaurant got its start back in 1976 in Boulder, Colorado, bringing pizza and beer to a cold hungry city. The restaurant has grown ever since.

Keeping in touch with their Colorado roots, a craft beer destination, Old Chicago Pizza & Tap Room doesn’t hesitate to collaborate with local craft breweries whenever possible. That’s where St. Paul, Minnesota’s Summit Brewing came into the picture.

Old Chicago’s desire to give the customer a unique experience lead the duo to team up on Old Chicago/Summit Brewing “Cracking Wit.”

Folks at Old Chicago recently spent the day brewing at Summit, aiming to create a unique beer perfect for drinking in (FINALLY) warmer weather, and of course, with their legendary pizza.

Cracking Wit is of course a witbier, brewed with coriander and Equinox hops. Instead of orange peel, the team decided to use lemon peel to brighten up the citrusy pop of Cracking Wit.

Want to try Old Chicago/Summit Cracking Wit? While Old Chicago has 100 taprooms around the United States, only a lucky 47 will get the draft only offering. If you are one of the lucky 47 Old Chicago locations, Cracking Wit hits taps starting May 20th.  The beer is truly a unique offering, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Check out the gallery below of scenes of the brew day, and a list of the locations to get Old Chicago/Summit Cracking Wit.

Style: Witbier (w/ Coriander, Lemon Peel)
Availability: Draft Only
States: Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and of course, Minnesota.

Jester King Coquetier, A Sazerac Inspired Offering

Jester King Coquetier is a new barrel aged aged offering on sale at the brewery starting tomorrow.

The brandy barrel aged farmhouse ale is brewed with cubeb peppercorns, anise seed, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Jester King Coquetier grabs its inspiration from the traditional New Orleans cocktail, Sazerac.

Lemon zest recalls the cocktail’s traditional garnish, a thin sliver of lemon peel resting on the rim of the glass. The beer was aged in French brandy barrels, as the cocktail originally called for Cognac brandy.

Jester King Coquetier was brewed in April of 2014. The beer was first fermented in stainless steel using the the brewery’s unique blend of micro-organisms. After stainless, Coquetier was aged in 600 liter French brandy barrels for seven months before being refermented in bottles.

750ml Bottles of Jester King Coquetier will be available April 24th, at 4 pm.

Heavy Seas Smooth Sail Arrives in April

Heavy Seas Smooth Sail Cans

Heavy Seas Smooth Sail Summer Ale arrives in April.

The brewery just launched their first year round beer in more than a decade, Crossbones Session IPA. The barrel aged, limited series known as Uncharted Waters, has a few new releases on the way.

Perfect for warm weather, Smooth is a wheat ale, brewed with orange and lemon peel.

…Brewmaster, Chris Leonard, “Smooth Sail Summer Ale is a beer that has been in development for quite some time. The goal was to produce a light, refreshing, flavorful beer that appeals to active folks and will become an integral part of warm weather fun. The beer is more than 20% malted wheat, giving it an airy mouthfeel and a frothy head. We’ve employed a neutral strain of “wheat” yeast to produce a clean tasting beer that is delicate on the palate. American hops are introduced late in the boil to impart a crisp flavor dimension. Finally, dried orange and lemon peel went into in our hopback to provide a fruity, citrus aroma – without adding sweetness…

Heavy Seas Smooth Sail Summer Ale will be available only in cans and draft.

Style: Wheat Ale (w/ Lemon Peel, Orange Peel.)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft.
