Smuttynose 2012 Big Beer Releases

2012 Big Beer Series line-up:

January- Baltic Porter
March- Really Old Brown Dog
May- Wheat Wine Ale
June/July- Homunculus
September- Scotch Ale
October- Stout (possibly Imperial, possibly something new)
December- Gravitation

A couple of release have been moved into the 2012 schedule.  Smutty addresses this:

…Due to increased demand for our core brands, we lost the ability to have more than one Big Beer in process at a time. This caused two significant delays in 2011′s series and a few small ones as well. We still wanted to brew Baltic Porter and Really Old Brown Dog, so we’ve simply bumped them onto 2012. Otherwise, we tried to make the new schedule with realistic ease-of-production in mind. On other words, we hate missing deadlines and as a result, we set deadlines that were more attainable than last year’s.

Below is the is the 2011 (and part of 2012) schedule for you to compare.

– Wheat Wine  Dec. ’10
– Barleywine  Jan. ’11
– Imperial Stout   March ’11
– Maibock   April ’11
– Homunculus (was Short Batch 1 – the Gnome)  July ’11
– Farmhouse Ale August ’11
– Gravitation Sept. ’11
– S’Muttonator Oct. ’11
– Baltic Porter Nov. ’11
–  Really Old Brown Dog  Jan’ 2012

Fungus Beer: Smuttynose Satchmo

Smuttynose SatchmoSmuttynose Brewing Satchmo.  Ale brewed with mushrooms, aged on oak chips.  The 13th addition to Smutty’s Short Batch Series.

Satchmo is a low-gravity, lightly hopped brown porter that gets its unique mouthfeel from 35 pounds of dried black trumpet mushrooms. Our first collaboration brew was made with Chef Evan Mallet, of Portsmouth’s Black Trumpet Bistro. Chef Mallet, an avid mushroom forager, suggested the idea, and with the help of his staff, collected a portion of the black trumpets from his land in South Berwick, Maine. Satchmo will be released in our Short Batch Series in early November and will be on tap at Chef Mallet’s restaurant in Portsmouth’s historic water front. We will also bottle a small portion for sale exclusively at Smuttynose.

Availability: 22oz bombers. Released at Portsmouth Black Trumpet Bistro, & Brewery Arrival: November, 2011

4.75% ABV, 25 IBU

Thx to Matt Hunt for detail heads up..

Smuttynose Steps Closer to Dream Home

Smuttynose Brewing steps ever so closer to their dream home.  If all goes well, the brewery will be breaking ground this fall.  Here’s the rundown/timeline.

The new brewery in Hampton will go forward.  The property in Towle Farm Road location was purchased in 2008, and the site approved by the town.   According to Smutty, the site is “shovel ready.”

Financial plans are being smoothed out as you read this.  Financing will come from owner equity, SBA financing, and small business stimulus loans.  All goes well, ground will be broken this fall, finished by the end of 2012 or early 2013. [SmuttynoseBlog]

Smuttynose Gets Production Help

Smuttynose Brewing just got some brewing help to meet demand.  F.X. Matt, makers of the Saranac line of beers has helped out.

Press Release

(Portsmouth, NH) — These days, college students aren’t the only people saying, “Hey, we need more beer!” Smuttynose Brewing Company of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, recently shipped the first batch of its award-winning Old Brown Dog Ale brewed at F.X. Matt Brewing Company in Utica, New York, the first of four batches scheduled through the end of 2011.

The Utica-brewed Brown Dog will be put in six packs, twelve packs, and 1/6 barrel kegs. Regular Smuttynose drinkers will notice a slightly different look to the bottles, with a full-wrap neck label and more square bottle shoulders. 1/2 barrel kegs and bottles for Variety Packs will still be brewed at Smuttynose in New Hampshire.

Off-site production of Old Brown Dog became necessary due to unprecedented demand for Smuttynose beer. “We didn’t have enough tank space to brew everything we needed, but discontinuing brands or pulling out of sales territories were never options. After some analysis, we decided that this was the best option,” said Greg Blanchard, Smuttynose’s Head Brewer. Blanchard cited the ease of transitioning the beloved brown ale’s recipe to another brewery as well as its consistent ordering pattern as the main reasons for placing Old Brown Dog into the capable hands of Matt, which produces beer on behalf of many other craft breweries.

Shipments of Smuttynose beer are up 34% in 2011, more than double what was projected. Planning for a new, purpose-built brewery in Hampton, New Hampshire, is nearing completion and process improvements at Smuttynose’s current home have sped up operations, but these measures aren’t enough to quench the thirst of beer drinkers in the 19 states where Smuttynose is sold. The New York production arrangement is a temporary one; “Ultimately, we believe that every drop of Smuttynose should be brewed in our brewery,” said Blanchard, “and we plan to bring Old Brown Dog home as soon as we can.”

About Smuttynose Brewing Company: Smuttynose Brewing Company is New Hampshire’s leading craft brewery. Independently owned since its founding in 1994, Smuttynose brews over 20 different styles of beer for distribution in 19 states, including its best-selling Finest Kind IPA and international award-winners Robust Porter and Big A IPA. In 2010, the company’s 31 employees worked together to brew, package and sell nearly 30,000 barrels or 1,000,000 gallons of all-natural, unfiltered, honest-to-goodness beer from its brewery in Portsmouth.

Homunculus Bottled Today

Smuttynose Homunculus

Smuttynose Homunculus

Smuttynose Brewing is bottling their newest offering Homunculus today.  This Belgian style offering heads for shelves in July.
Homunculus is a hoppy Belgian-style golden ale. A special Belgian abbey yeast left an alcohol content of 9.9% abv. The grain bill is very simple: 2-Row, Weyermann Carahell, and some cane sugar to lighten the body. Bravo hops are exclusively used for a moderately aggressive 45 IBUs while all the late boil additions are Sterling.

So far so good, but Homunculus’ real moxie comes from its dryhopping. We infused 150 barrels (4650 gallons) with 176 pounds of Nugget hops and 264 pounds of Sterling hops. That’s nearly 3 pounds of hops per barrel of beer! It’s safe to say that you can expect an aroma explosion when you finally get some in your glass.

What is a Homunculus? There are several different definitions that come from psychology, alchemy, and preformation. The word itself is Latin for, “little human.” As you can see from the label art, we were captivated by the preformationist usage of the term. The name was discovered during a brainstorming session. We didn’t want to call the scaled up brew by its original name, so out came the thesaurus. We saw “homunculus” was a synonym for “gnome” and the rest, as they say, was history.

Style: Belgian Strong Pale

Availability: 22oz bombers

Arrival: Mid-Late July, 2011.

9.9% ABV

Smuttynose Homunculous

Smuttynose Brewing is brewing back a beer from the “Small Batch Series” dubbed Gnome.  This time around, it gets a new name, and pretty weird label.

About Gnome:
First brewed 2007.  The beer is an homage to hoppy Belgian style brews growing popular in the U.S.  Base beer is a Belgian style tripel brewed with White Labs Chimay yeast.  Very little of this beer has ever been available.  The name is an homage to Brasserie d’Achouffe.  It’s coming back into production, born again as Homunculous.

Label:
The Smuttynose Big Beer Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities.  After years of gestation our highly regarded hoppy Belgian style ale, “The Gnome” has been reborn as Homunculous.  Impregnated with loads of hop character, balanced with malt sweetness & fruit esters derived from the Belgian yeast, this golden colored ale is ripe for the picking.  Share some responsibly with your gnomies.

Style: Belgian IPA
Hops: Vanguard Bittering Hops, Sterling Flavor Additions, East Kent Goldings Dry Hop
Malt: Weyermann Pilsner Malt, CaraHell (per Smutty)
Cane Sugar

Arrival: Spring 2011
