Smuttynose Vunderbar Pils (Lederhosen Not Included)

Smuttynose VunderbarSmuttynose Vunderbar Pilsner.  Awesome in so many ways.  (Are you seeing this picture?)  Vunderbar was/is part of Smuttynose’s Short Batch Series, released only on draft (previously.)

Vunderbar Pils marks a departure from the last few short batches we have brewed.  It’s not high in alcohol.  It doesn’t use any kind of wild yeast, nor is it barrel-aged.  It’s a beer in the classic, if not archetypal, sense of the word.  Best of all, it’s blindingly delicious and drinkable.  The low bitterness and moderate body make the beer conducive to some serious elbow bending; we went through five gallons here in less than twenty-four hours.

Style: Pilsner
Hops: Saaz, dryhopping at ½ pound per barrel.
Malts: Weyermann Pilsner, Weyermann Acidulated

Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft
Arrival: TBA

5.11% ABV, 15 IBU
.
Note: The above information about Smutty’s pils is correct assuming they haven’t adjusted the recipe since it’s inception on draft in 2010.

Smuttynose Really Old Brown Dog Ships

Smuttynose Brewing’s Really Old Brown Dog has officially started shipping.

Really Old Brown Dog was first brewed in 2007 and has become one of our fastest-selling and beloved Big Beers.  In addition to our two dog-themed beers, we also host a Brown Dog Pinup Page, to which you should feel free to submit pictures of your favorite pets or simply browse candid shots of other people’s.  The beer itself is complex.  You’ll taste malty character that’s reminiscent of whole-wheat, digestive biscuits while tannin and vanillin notes add depth and complexity to the malt.  A final wash of dried fruits and port adds a lively third dimension of enjoyment for your taste buds.

Style: Old Ale
Hops:
Sterling
Malts: North American 2-Row, Aromatic, Crisp Pale Ale, Carafa II DH, C-15, Carared
Port-soaked oak chips
Yeast: WLP-001 California Ale Yeast

Availability: 22 oz bombers. Limited to 200 barrel

10.1% abv, 20 IBU

Another Appearance Of Smuttynose Brett & I

Smuttynose Brett & ISmuttynose Brewing’s Brett & I is part of the brewery’s Short Batch Series, debuting back in 2007.  Until now, Brett & I has been draft only.  Below is the orignal mention of this by the brewery.

Brett and I” is a beer brewed in homage to the great Down East humorists Marshall Dodge and Robert Bryan (with Tim Sample getting the honorable mention.) If you haven’t listened to the “Bert and I” tapes, go ahead and call LL Bean for your copy. They’ll give you a good idea of the daily insanity of living in Northern New England. Of course that begs the question of exactly what I’m doing here. But, oh well, it’s a great place to drink beer at least. And Brett and I is hopefully a great beer to drink while talking socialism over the back fence with your neighbor Enoch.

Brett and I is obviously brewed with Brettanomyces. We used Brettanomyces claussenii and in our case we used it for secondary conditioning. The original beer was a Belgian strong ale brewed with the Chimay yeast cropped from The Gnome. Still gave us that nice fruity character and still hasn’t dropped bright. We ended up kegging the beer after six months of conditioning, but the brett character is still developing. It gives off an interested pineapple aroma and flavor, which I hope will continue to evolve.

Style:  2012 Edition, Not known.  Previous Edition, Belgian Strong Pale.  (Barrel Aged)
Hops:  Bittering – Magnum, Flavoring – Liberty, Flavoring – Saaz, Aroma – Santiam
Malts: Weyermann Pilsner Malt, Munich, Wheat, Acidulated Malt
Availability: 750 ml bottles
Arrival: TBA (along w/ quantity)

?? ABV

note: The above is tentative.  Subject to change at whim of the brewer, the beer, or the barrel.

Smuttynose Brews In England

David Yarrington & J.T. Thompson of Smuttynose Brewing are on their way to England.  The duo will be brewing a special batch of beer for English pub chain JD Wetherspoon.  They won’t be alone.  The collaboration will be brewed with the brewers at Wadworth Brewery.   The idea was born last summer with Thompson and Yarrington were approached by Naked Brands (an importer.)

Cool stuff: The brewhouse there is steam engine powered.

The Beer: Dubbed Murrican Mild.  It will bring together German hops, Belgian Malts, and British yeast.

The Sadness:  You’ll probably never see this Smuttynose/Wadworth beer in the states.  There are almost 800 Wetherspoon pubs throughout the UK.
