Golden Road Brewing Hires New GM, Paul Burgis (PR)

LOS ANGELES, CA – The producers of Southern California’s first and only canned craft beer, Golden Road Brewing, continue to set a foundation for growth with the hiring of Paul Burgis as General Manager. At Anheuser-Busch, Burgis supervised packaging, managed production lines, and was responsible for product consistency and quality, as well as plant finances.

Burgis earned operational expertise while rising through the ranks of Anheuser-Busch, and his managerial and production skills will be a great asset to Golden Road as they continue to follow an aggressive plan for expansion and increased efficiency.

Says Golden Road Brewing CEO and co-founder Tony Yanow, “The moment we met Paul we recognized his unique skill-set and his dedication to the production of quality products.”

Adds President and co-founder Meg Gill, “We did not know we needed this role until we met Paul, and are honored to have found an individual who is not only a great fit in terms of timing, but also fits our culture. I’m excited to let go of some of the daily operational duties, and focus on creative endeavors and local distribution, knowing that I have Paul’s full support.”

Golden Road Brewing recently debuted Wolf Among Weeds, the inaugural beer in their Custom IPA series which celebratesCalifornia’s enthusiasm for hop-forward IPAs. Wolf Among Weeds joinsGolden Road’s two flagship canned beers, Point the Way IPA and Golden Road Hefeweizen, on the shelf.  With Burgis’ guidance, Golden Road Brewing is preparing for its next canned release slated for early this fall, following Golden Road’s one year anniversary.

“Anheuser-Busch is a company of owners and I am amazed everyday at the dedication of their team. Although I will miss Anheuser-Busch I have learned so much from my many years with them.  As a native Angeleno, I look forward to joining Golden Road and supporting Meg and Tony’s passion for making great local beer!” says Burgis.’

Golden Road Debuts Wolf Among Weeds IPA (PR)

If there was ever a ‘Wolf Among Weeds,’ it’s Golden Road Brewing’s bullish President Meg Gill.

At 27-years-old, Gill is reportedly the youngest female brewery owner in the world and her latest move was as strategic as wolf stalking it’s prey.

Yesterday she launched the company’s newest canned offering, ‘Wolf Among Weeds IPA,’ a hop-heavy Double IPA that checks in at 8-percent ABV. It’s the first installment in Gill’s recently established ‘Custom IPA Series,’ which she said will serve as Golden Road’s seasonal program.

“We felt like we had an opportunity, that, instead of doing a traditional seasonal program based on winter ‘dark beer’ months or summer ‘light beer’ months, we could bring both a style and a category to life in Los Angeles,” she said. “We felt like the IPA category was a good investment and that it would also attract new consumers to craft beer in general.”

Gill said the new beer is definitely a departure from the company’s current offerings — Point The Way IPA and Hefeweizen — which she admits are more approachable and built for everyday consumption.

“These are 4-packs that are more ‘dare to be adventurous’ and less sessionable,” she said.

And the release of Wolf Among Weeds is no doubt timed to coincide with the August 2nd celebration of ‘IPA Day,’ a toast for beer enthusiasts around the globe to celebrate the popular hoppy style.

Only 548 cases of the beer were made, all of which have since been sold to distributors.

“We kept about 30 cases for the pub, but those sold out immediately,” she said.

An extremely limited amount of Wolf Among Weeds is available at Whole Foods and specialty beer shops around Los Angeles. It retails for $11.99 per 4-pack, the same price point as Golden Road’s 6-pack core offerings.

Gill said she plans to make at least one more addition to the Custom IPA Series this year and will then look to add third and fourth IPA’s in 2013 to complete a full ‘seasonal’ schedule.

Release from Golden Road Brewing is below:

LOS ANGELES, CA — Just in time for National IPA Day on August 2nd, Golden Road Brewing is proud to debut their Custom IPA Series with their newest canned beer, Wolf Among Weeds, a hop-heavy Double IPA.

Named after the hop species it showcases, Humulus Lupulus, Wolf Among Weeds is the inaugural beer in Golden Road’s Custom IPA series, which celebrates California’s enthusiasm for hop-forward IPAs. Says Golden Road President Meg Gill, “Wolf is our newest tribute to California, a balanced IPA that really lets the hops shine. It’s no secret that people in Southern California absolutely love IPAs — so to honor that love we’re excited to create a line of custom IPAs that build on that style and get creative with new offerings.” Fans of the hop-heavy style will be pleased to know Golden Road plans to release two to three custom IPAs into the series annually.

Wolf Among Weeds joins Golden Road’s two flagship canned beers, Point the Way IPA and Golden Road Hefeweizen on the shelf, and is available for sale at the Pub at Golden Road Brewing, and in limited release throughout the greater Los Angeles area.  With an 8% ABV this beer boasts fresh pine sap and tropical fruit notes that are mirrored in its aroma and flavor profile. Beers in the Custom IPA Line will be available in Golden Road’s signature tall-boy 16oz cans, and will retail in packs of four.

Oskar Blues In North Carolina. Full Press Release

From Colorado to North Carolina, the next stop for Oskar Blues.   Check out the full press release.

Longmont, CO (May 2012) – Funky little Oskar Blues Grill & Brew started 15 years ago when Dale Katechis and his high school sweet-heart stumbled across the small town of Lyons, Colorado while on a road trip north from their home in Alabama. That Rocky Mountain trip continues east as Dale finds the same downhome feeling in the rolling hills of Pisgah National Forrest of Brevard, North Carolina.

Oskar Blues, named “The hottest place to be on a Saturday night in Colorado” by Rolling Stone Magazine, has announced plans for a restaurant/music venue and brewery location just off the bike path to Bracken Mountain in the small downtown of Brevard, N.C. The brewery plans to have the soul-savin’ live music venue and brewery up and running by December 2012.

“I’ve left a bike in Brevard for years as we’ve been coming here to ride mountain bikes and check out our buddies Mountain Song Music Festival. This place rings true with the same eclectic mountain charm that inspired Oskar Blues to put Dale’s Pale Ale in a can back in the day in Lyons, CO.” says soul-founder Dale Katechis. “Brevard and Lyons share a small town main street tone mingled with live music and an energy emerging from the surrounding hills.”

Oskar Blues, one of the fastest growing breweries in the country, sells over 35 percent of their beer east of the big muddy river, making for a great opportunity to look into a local location in that area. They have secured a contract on a 30,000 square foot brewery space along with a 6,000 square foot restaurant/music venue location in downtown Brevard. “We’ve looked at the options of growing our Colorado based brewing to the next level and the thought the idea of opening another small, intimate restaurant and brewery on a grassroots level sounds like a lot more fun.” says Dale. “With that much beer traveling east of the Mississippi it allows us to invest in another small town that shares our passions and recoup the investment as we contribute to the community and streamline our shipping costs amongst other things.”

Oskar Blues has worked hard to keep that hands-on feel with small Colorado projects like their Hops & Heifers Farm, that provides homegrown beef, pork and vegetables to their restaurants, and handmade mountain bikes with REEB Cycles as the brewery & restaurants have been blessed with growth. “It’s important to us to keep that trailside comradery amongst each other and the community.” said Katechis.

Sun King Brewery and Oskar Blues Release Chaka (PR)

Indianapolis, Ind. (May 1, 2012) — Indiana-based Sun King Brewery and Colorado-based Oskar Blues Brewery have been working together for months and are excited to bring you Chaka, a limited-release Belgian-style ale — the first craft beer to be packaged in the Alumi-Tek® re-sealable pint bottle from Ball Corporation. Chaka will be released in limited quantities at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego on May 2, 2012 and then in each brewery’s home markets the following week.

“Until we undertook this project, only large breweries and beverage companies had access to this type of packaging,” said Clay Robinson, Sun King co-founder. “Sun King and Oskar Blues worked closely with Ball Corporation and Cask Brewing Systems to design and build a simple, functional small scale system that will allow craft brewers to take advantage of this unique packaging option.”

Oskar Blues is a pioneer in the craft canning movement as the first American craft brewery to can their beer with the release of Dale’s Pale Ale in 2002. They have grown to become the largest American craft brewery to package beer exclusively in cans, producing 59,000 barrels of beer in 2011.

Sun King began crafting beer in the summer of 2009 and has grown to become one of Indiana’s largest breweries, producing nearly 10,000 barrels of beer in 2011. Sun King was the first Indiana craft brewery to can their beer and the first brewery ever to create a customizable can for their seasonal and specialty beer releases.

The connection between these two breweries is deeper than the fact that they both can their beer. Oskar Blues head brewer, Dave Chichura, began his professional brewing career in Indianapolis fifteen years ago where he became friends with Dave Colt and Clay Robinson, the two brewers who created Sun King. The three friends have been talking for years about working together on a collaborative beer, so when the opportunity came to assist in the introduction of a new packaging option for craft beer, it was an easy yes.

The end result is a delicious Belgian-style ale crafted with a blend of ingredients from each brewery’s home state: Shagbark Hickory syrup from Hickoryworks in Trafalgar, Ind.; grain from Colorado Malting Company; and a special yeast blend from Brewing Science Institute, also in Colorado. Brewers from both breweries worked together to formulate the recipe and traveled between Colorado and Indiana to brew at both locations.

“Unique packaging like the Alumi-Tek bottle provides both Oskar Blues and Sun King the differentiation we need to make our limited-release beers distinct from our core lines. Plus, the sleek, bottle shape is appealing to our customers,” said Chad Melis, marketing director of Oskar Blues Brewery. “Craft beer in aluminum bottles is another step forward in the evolution of beer.”

Now available on tap and in cans at hundreds of locations around central Indiana, Sun King has grown into the third-largest beer brewer in the state of Indiana. Maui Brewing Hits Arizona, Nevada

[UPDATED] – Maui Brewing (Maui, Hawaii) just announced their beers are headed to Arizona & now Nevada .  They just signed a distribution agreement with Republic National Distribution (AZ) & Cépage Selections (NV.)  Garrett Marrero on the distribution expansion in Arizona:
”Whether you enjoy rafting or boating — or just hanging out along the shores of the state’s beautiful beaches, we are happy to be able to share our canned craft beers with the people of Arizona.  With glass not allowed on the rivers, cans are the practical choice for all outdoor enthusiasts and starting very soon, our beers will be available locally. We’re proud to be giving folks several other canned craft beer choices and excited to soon see them ‘rolling down the river’ with a Maui beer in hand!”
About Nevada:
”Vegas is often referred to as the ‘ninth island’ due to the long-standing connection between Hawaii and Vegas so it’s only fitting that it’s our ninth distribution territory; what can I say? They wanted real Hawaiian beer!”
Recently, the brewery expanded distribution to Texas, and introduced Flyin High IPA.  Maui has 2 locations in Hawaii.  A 7 barrel brewpub, and 25 barrel production facility.  Both are operated by founder Garrett Marrero, and his wife Melanie.
