Maui Brewing acquires Modern Times

To the backup-bidder goes the spoils. Hawaii’s Maui Brewing acquires Modern Times

The fate of Modern Times has been up in the air for months now. In February 2022, the brewery announced the closing of four of its 8 taprooms, citing financial fallout from the global pandemic. Then in March, Modern Times was placed in receivership by lead lender California Bank and Trust.

Maui Brewing was favored as the potential buyer in June, until “Brewery X,” an Anaheim-based brewery entered the bidding. 70 bids and 3 hours later, Brewery X won the auction, agreeing to pay $20 million for Modern Times. Additionally, Brewery X stated they would have the deal fully funded and close within two weeks.

Except, that didn’t happen. Brewery X missed the closure and funding deadline, losing a $500,000 dollar deposit on the transaction. Maui acquired Modern Times for $15.3 million.

Co-Founder Garrett Marrero was surprised when Mauil Brewing was back in play for Modern Times.”Given the surprising outcome of the auction, Maui Brewing Company was prudent in its decision to move forward, taking appropriate measures to evaluate and solidify details prior to the announcement for the sake of both the Modern Times and Maui Brewing teams,” says Marrero in his brewery’s official announcement.

Currently, Maui Brewing produces 90,000 barrels (2.7 million gallons) of beer annually. Combined with Modern Times, that output increases to 125,000 barrels of beer annually – a production capacity that still will not allow Maui to be sold in all 50 states.

The deal is expected to close in late October 2022.

Maui Brewing Lemongrass Saison, brewed with Lost Abbey

Maui Lemongrass Saison

What started as a collaboration in 2013 with Lost Abbey is head to shelves again this month – Maui Brewing Lemongrass Saison.

Lost Abbey’s Tomme Arthur mentions that a simple saison with lemongrass was a recipe he always wanted to create, but honestly, never got around to making. Hawaii’s Maui Brewing stepped in and helped make this beer a reality.

RELATED: Maui releases POG IPA

Simple recipe it may be, but neither of these breweries skimp on flavor. The Belgian-style saison uses 200 pounds of locally grown lemongrass.

Our original batch of this beer was the culmination of that vision; and Maui Brewing’s skillful use of this amazing flavor makes me truly wish it was available more often. In revisiting this recipe, my wishes are coming true,”

Maui Brewing Lemongrass Saison is back in action starting Friday, January 6th, in 12 ounce cans and draft.

Style: Saison (w/ Lemongrass)

Passionfruit, orange, & guava highlight Maui Brewing POG IPA

Maui Brewing POG IPA

Maui Brewing POG IPA is the latest release by the Hawaii based brewery, based on very popular juice drink.

Let’s start with POG. The acronym stands for the the juices ingredients- Passionfruit, Orange and Guava that got its start back in 1971. A woman named Mary Soon is accredited with the creation, who worked of the Haleakala Dairy on Maui. Interestingly, those same POG caps gave rise to a 1990’s game by the same name – POGS. (IF you don’t know what we are talking about, Google it.)

Maui Brewing POG IPA is an India pale ale brewed with Enigma, El Dorado, Jerrylo, and Citra hops, plus fresh Passionfruit, orange and guava. As you can imagine, the end result is hoppy, juicy, and full of tropical flavor.

Sourcing enough of the three fruit varieties is the biggest challenge. On top of that, guava has a really short shelf life once picked. It really makes brewing this beer exciting, because all of a sudden when the farmer has the yield we need, it’s GO time!” – Matt Ponichtera, Maui Brewing Supervisor

Maui Brewing POG IPA is available in 12 ounce cans across the brewery’s entire footprint for a limited time.

Style: IPA (w/ PassionfruitOrangesGuava)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft.
Debut: December, 2016

7.1% ABV, 58 IBUs
