Jolly Pumpkin: Maxed Out

Good news from Ron Jefferies, founder of Jolly Pumpkin (Dexter, MI.)   He’s maxed out.  Jefferies has gone from selling 160 barrels in 2004, to selling shy of 2,000 barrels (62,000 gallons.) He was quoted at  AnnArbor.com as saying:

“I have more orders than I can fill right now,” Jeffries explained. “The demand is there, but we don’t have any more space.”

Sounds like an expansion is in the brewery’s future.  Recently, the brewery announced a collaboration with Maui Brewing – Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole.

Maui & Jolly Pumpkin Releasing “Superhuman” Collaboration

Maui Sobrehuman Palena oleMaui Brewing Co (Lahaina, Maui, HI)  has just announced a new collaboration brew with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales (Dexter, MI).  Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole will be the brewery’s first collaboration in a can.  The name is a blended Spanish-Hawaiian term for “superhuman.”

What’s the beer?
Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole is a red ale brewed with liliko’i (passionfruit) and cherries.   Each brewery will add its own unique spin – as Maui will ferment normally (arriving in cans), and Jolly Pumpkin will make it  a barrel aged sour (in bottles).

Where?
Maui will produce 4,000 cases & 80 barrels, distributed in all 11 states in which the brewery currently ships.   Ed. Note: Jolly Pumpkin most likely will not know yield until barrel blending time.

How Did These Two Find Each Other?
“John and Garrett were planning their collaborations for 2012 and because John is from Michigan and coming home for the holidays my name came up.  This whole idea came together really fast — just weeks before John’s visit.  It’s been a very challenging blend to develop — I’m super-excited about it and a little intimidated at the same time. I’ve been enchanted by Hawaii for years and it’s been great to work with everyone at MBC and get to know them.  I always enjoy collaborations but this one is something really special.”

Style: Red Ale (Maui) / Ambiguous Style (Jolly Pumpkin)  (w/ Cherries, Passionfruit)
Availability: 12 oz cans, Bottle size TBA
Arrival: June, 2012 (SAVOR)

A Jolly Pumpkin For Prostates

Jolly Pumpkin (Dexter, MI) has teamed up with The Rare Beer Club and Shelton Brothers to bring a special release benefiting Pints For Prostates.  Lúpulo de Hielo is an oaky, pumpkin sour beer.

Lúpulo de Hielo was brewed with pumpkin, cacao and spices, then aged in oak barrels.  The name means ‘Ice Hop’ and is as hoppy as it is sour.  Aged for about a year in oak and blended with Calabaza Blanca.

We are excited to once again be involved with the Pints for Prostates campaign in reaching men through the universal language of beer.” – Ron Jeffries, President Jolly Pumpkin.

A portion of the proceeds of each bottle sold will be donated to Pints For Prostates.  Rare Beer Club will donate a $1.00 for every bottle shipped.

“This is a rare beer that delivers an important message. We want men to take charge of their health and get screened for prostate cancer,” said Rick Lyke, a prostate cancer survivor who founded Pints for Prostates after successful prostate cancer surgery in April 2008. “We’re thrilled that Jolly Pumpkin, The Rare Beer Club and Shelton Brothers are supporting the campaign in a way that will catch the attention of men needing to hear our message. We want to engage men in a conversation that might just save their lives.
