Half Acre Changes Heyoka to Senita Pale Ale

Half Acre Senita

Half Acre Brewing (Chicago, IL) is renaming Heyoka India Pale Ale to Senita India Pale Ale.

Recently, members of the Lakota community (Native Americans from the Great Plans of the United States)  reached out to Half Acre about the use of “Heyoka.” Heyoka, translates roughly to “jester.” The Lakota community was disappointed in Half Acre’s use of the word.

Recently, some members of the Lakota community reached out with disappointment in our usage of the word and requested that we stop. We didn’t and aren’t going to spend any time defending or explaining our use of the word. We’re simply making the right choice and respecting their wishes.

The conversations with the Lakota people were very positive, says Half Acre. The brewery found it to be learning opportunity. From now on, Heyoka will be know as Half Acre Senita India Pale Ale. “Senita” is the name of a cactus.

The brand changes will take place immediately.

Half Acre Tamayura Taps Today

Half Acre Beer tapped a “friendship brew” with Coedo Brewing today. Brewed with citrus hops, and yuzu juice.

The result, Tamayura, is an ardently refreshing, slightly tart, hair raiser. We laid down a frame of cracker dry malt, splashed 22 liters of 100% yuzu juice into the pool, dry hopped with Hallertau Blanc and Amarillo, and a few days before packaging, we grabbed all the citrus fruits we could manage – oranges, grapefruits, lemons, yuzu – and got to zesting, steeping the beer over the weekend before its migration into kegs.

On tap at Half Acre in Chicago as of December 10th, 2014.

Half Acre Big Hugs 2014, December 14th

Half Acre Big Hugs 2014

Half Acre Big Hugs Imperial Stout 2014 is ready. By our estimates, this is the sixth release of this coffee stout. The coffee, just like the brewing itself its local to Chicago, from Dark Matter Coffee.

Big Hugs is a dim kitten with aimless love in his heart and a ferocious will to live. Over the years he’s faced dinosaurs, rainbows, winter wonderland, a robotic plagiarism of himself, and more – but none a foe as elusive and mysterious as death itself. This story has the ultimate force taking the living and laying them down. Big Hugs has grappled with natural order and twisted the pillars of existence. While you hang in the balance, steal time to sit steady and spill this black rumble into your center. Big Hugs Imperial Stout is liquid char scraped from the bowels of eternity, soaked with the free spirit of an adolescent feline. Heed him and rejoice.

Look for bombers and growlers to be released on December 14th, starting at 11 am. Dark Matter coffee will at the brewery too, slinging the world’s OTHER most popular beverage.
