New York Bar Bans Sam Adams During Super Bowl

Foley’s Pub & Restaurant in New York City has made a statement about who they are rooting for during the Super Bowl.  Samuel Adams beer is officially banned during the Super Bowl.  Instead, the bar is urging it’s drinkers to order beers from Brooklyn Brewing.

The rivalry gets even deeper.  Shaun Clancy, owner of Foley’s has a bet with Ken Casey of McGreevy’s in Boston, similar other recent beer wagers by breweries.  Loser has to wear the other teams jersey, WHILE working a shift at the bar.  [CBSNews]

Garrett Oliver On Mary’s Maple Porter [Video]

Then next Brooklyn Brewing Brewmaster’s Reserve beer is Mary’s Maple Porter.  What is that exactly? The beer is named for Mary Wiles, a brewer that joined the Brooklyn team about a year ago.  The porter features maple syrup from her trees near the brewery. 50 gallons of maple syrup were used in the kettle to make Mary’s porter. Here’s Garrett Oliver to explain:

It’s On! Brooklyn & Harpoon Bet On Super Bowl

Brooklyn Brewing’s President Steve Hnidy  & Harpoon Brewing’s Dan Kenary have placed a have placed a friendly beer bet on the Super Bowl.  If the New York Giants win, Harpoon has to pour Brooklyn Lager in their tap room and their staff has to wear Giants jerseys for a week.  If the Patriots win, Harpoon IPA pours in Brooklyn with the staff in Pats jerseys.

Kenary:

“We are very confident that the Patriots will carry the day, and avenge the 2008 loss to the Giants,” said Kenary, who still cringes when he thinks back to pouring Brooklyn Lager four years ago.

Hindy:

“We know the Patriots had a better season record than the Giants. They are a great team,” said Hindy, clearly concerned about appearing over confident. “But the Giants have come together in the post-season. Eli Manning and his team have to keep it together for one more game.”

Just last week, Anchor lost a similar bet with Brooklyn.  The 49ers loss means that Anchor has to pour Sorachi Ace, and wear Giants jerseys.

Brooklyn VS. Anchor – NFC Championship Brewery Wager

Are you ready for some football?  Brooklyn Brewery (New York, NY) and Anchor Brewing Co. (San Francisco, CA) sure are and they are taking this year’s NFC Championship pretty seriously.  Anchor’s John Dannerbeck and Brooklyn’s Steve Hindy have come up with a little wager.  He who’s team loses this Sunday will pour the other’s beer and their tour staff will wear the opposing teams attire for a week at the loser’s brewery.  Brewers will wear jerseys of shame as well.

How John and Steve feel about this weekend’s matchup:

“We are very confident that the 49ers will come through for us and we will not have to suffer this humiliation,” said Dannerbeck. “We beat the Giants earlier this year, and I am sure we will do it again.”“The Giants have come together in an impressive way since the post-season commenced,” said Hindy. “We think Eli Manning and his team are going to avenge that earlier loss and move on to the Super Bowl.”

The 49ers are currently favored to win by 2.5 points.

Steve Hnidy Of Brooklyn Brewing Named CBC Keynote

Steve Hnidy, founder of Brooklyn Brewing, has been named Keynote Speaker for this years Craft Brewer’s Conference in San Diego, California.  The conference is May 2-5, 2011.

Press Release:

Keynote speaker Steve Hindy will kick off the 2012 Craft Brewers Conference (CBC) in San Diego, Calif. Nearly 4,000 industry professionals will gather for four days of education and networking, May 2-5 at the Town and Country Resort. With his experience ranging from international journalism to craft beer pioneering, Hindy is expected to inspire attendees with a unique perspective.

Hindy spent the late 1970s and early 1980s in the Middle East as an Associated Press correspondent. His early work was not directly related to his interest in beer. In fact, he sometimes found himself in countries that prohibited alcohol according to strict Islamic law. Nevertheless, he discovered a love for flavorful beer and homebrewing, thanks to a few foreign diplomats who couldn’t live without their favorite beers.
In 1984, Hindy and his neighbor, Tom Potter, founded Brooklyn Brewery, seeking to rebuild the robust brewing culture that once existed in New York’s German immigrant communities. Over the last three decades, Steve built the brewery into a well-recognized brand, overcoming the challenges of distribution, a small brewing facility, skeptical retailers and, more recently, a major brewery expansion. He also authored Beer School with Potter, a memoir of their stories and lessons from 20 years of adventure with Brooklyn Brewery.

Beyond his role at Brooklyn Brewery, Hindy is active in his local community and the broader craft beer community. He serves on the Governor’s Economic Development Council and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Alliance, and founded the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn. Within his industry, he serves on the Brewers Association (BA) board of directors and has testified before Congress to emphasize the importance of self-distribution laws. Hindy was awarded the 2010 F.X. Matt Defense of the Industry Award to recognize his efforts in government affairs.

“Steve is an industry pioneer,” explains BA Director Paul Gatza, “and he has an interesting background as a foreign correspondent, author and entrepreneur. In a time of uncertainty in the brewing industry, he had the vision to establish a brewery in an area with a wonderful brewing heritage, which is now beloved by American beer drinkers.”

In his keynote address, Hindy is anticipated to discuss his passion for beer during dangerous times as a foreign correspondent and why he chose to start a brewery in Brooklyn, especially at a time when there was no real roadmap for brewing entrepreneurs. He’ll also relate lessons learned along the way, the decision to expand in Brooklyn, as well as the importance of strong relationships with local, state and federal legislators.
