Sierra Nevada & Karl Strauss “NXS” Red IPA debuts, California only

Sierra Nevada Karl Strauss NXS 2017

Late in 2015 the brewing world saw Sierra Nevada and Stone Brewing team up in a hoppy collaboration known as NXS.  The all California creation was split down the middle, with 50% of the IPA batch aged in gin barrels, and 50% in rye whiskey barrels. NXS rises once again this week, this time, with another California based brewery, Karl Strauss.

RELATED: Beer Collaborations

One thing is certain, hops definitely unite brewers. Which ones chosen, and how you brew with them is just one of the things setting you apart. Sierra Nevada and Karl Strauss collective have 65 years of craft brewing under their belt. It is the experience that will bring you what the duo calls “unabashedly hoppy”, an IPA with tropical fruit and citrus hop flavors. Sierra Nevada touts this beer as a “red IPA” and by the looks of it, the moniker fits.

Craft beer was born in California and it was here that brewers created the “west coast” style of hop forward brewing. California is a big state, and NorCal and SoCal often have different approaches to beer – yet remain united through hops.

Sierra Nevada Karl Strauss NXS will be available in 22 ounce bottles, limited to California.

Style: IPA
Availability: 22oz Bottles
Debut: Mid-March, 2017

6.5% ABV

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp East Meets West IPA, featuring Tree House Brewing

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp East Meets West IPA can

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp East Meets West IPA will be a part of this years “Beer Camp Around the World” when it debuts later this year.

In 2017, Sierra Nevada is taking their famed Beer Camp internationally, collaborating with both selected American brewers, and some of the world’s best. Stateside, Massachusetts based Tree House Brewing Company has been  selected.

Sierra Nevada is famous for the west coast IPA. If you wanted to point fingers at breweries responsible for the hazy, “New England Style” IPA, at least one finger would be pointed at Tree House. Perhaps that’s what makes this future collaboration so interesting. Clarity meets hazy. East Coast meets West Coast. Think of it like turning on a humidifier and dehumidifier at the same time. You’d think it would cause a rip in the space-time continuum.

In just a few short years, Tree House has made made a big impact on the beer scene with their approach to the IPA – low bitterness, intense juicy hop flavor and unfiltered haze. As fellow lovers of the IPA, we combined our styles – the classic American IPA malt body and the New England approach to hopping- resulting in lightly bitter, unfiltered beer with huge hop flavor.

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp East Meets West IPA will be a part of both the Beer Camp Variety Pack, and pouring at various Beer Camp festivals later this year.

Style: IPA
Availability: 16oz Cans, Draft.
Debut: TBA

7% ABV

Touch of citrus makes Sierra Nevada Sidecar Orange Pale Ale

Sierra Nevada Sidecar Orange Pale Ale bottle

Sierra Nevada Sidecar Orange Pale Ale is now one of two new beers in the brewery’s portfolio in 2017.

The India pale ale has dominated the style category in sales for years. One of the fastest movers in the IPA family has been the fruited variety. The same goes for pale ales. Sierra Nevada has taken notice of this trend, and is ready to release their own fruited spins on some of their iconic beers.

Sierra Nevada Sidecar Orange Pale Ale is stepping up to the plate – brewed with citrus-heavy hops and orange peel. A citrus-y take on the brewery’s iconic pale ale.

The name accurately describes what you are in for in this new release. The best description – imagine Pale Ale (what you should have had by now), with a more pronounced orange and citrus flavor. A fresh take on a classic.

Adding tangy orange to the classic style we pioneered didn’t come natural to us. Our brewers argued over the perfect blend of bold hops and orange peel to create the best flavor and crisp, citrus bite. The result is a hop-forward beer that can stand alongside Pale Ale as a craft beer classic.

Sierra Nevada Sidecar Orange Pale Ale is a 12 ounce bottle and draft release.

Style: Pale Ale (w/ Orange Peel.)
Availability: 12oz Bottle, Draft.
Debut: January, 2017

5.3% ABV

Sierra Nevada Peach IPA

Sierra Nevada Peach IPA is slated for a future Variety Pack in 2017.

The California/North Carolina based brewery has released a peach IPA recipe in the past, part of the Beer Camp Across America lineup. Next year, a new iteration of Sierra Nevada Peach IPA will rise again. As you can imagine, an American India pale ale with fresh peaches.

Sierra Nevada Peach IPA will be a 12 ounce bottle release. The brewery has not yet announced this beer

Sierra Nevada Ginger Bigfoot, reminiscent of a cocktail

Sierra Nevada Ginger Bigfoot

Sierra Nevada Ginger Bigfoot, part of the brewery’s Trip in the Woods Series, is hitting shelves nationwide.

As the year winds down Sierra Nevada’s famous barleywine, Bigfoot, hits shelves. Until recently, variants of that beer were rare one-off kegs, or bottles found only at the brewery’s taprooms in California and North Carolina. Now you have a chance to buy your own Sierra Nevada Ginger Bigfoot.

This edition features a bourbon barrel-aged barleywine, with added fresh ginger. The ginger gives this strong ale a bright, zesty character.

This is a special version of our barrel-aged Bigfoot Barleywine Ale with fresh ginger added into the barrels. The resulting kick of ginger mellows Bigfoot’s ferocious hop bite and adds a new level of brightness and complexity. The beer features notes of burnt sugar, orange zest, vanilla, and candied ginger.

Taste: A whiskey ginger cocktail comes to mind. Fans of ginger root will be quite happy with this beer. Sierra Nevada understands the symbiotic nature of base beer to flavors picked up in the barrels. Both flavors are very much intact, accentuated with the bright ginger flavors.

Sierra Nevada Ginger Bigfoot is a 750 milliliter bottle release.

Style: Barleywine (w/ Ginger. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: 750ml Bottles, Corked & Caged.
Debut: November, 2016

12.6% ABV

Sierra Nevada Trip in the Woods Barrel Aged Narwhal goes national

Sierra Nevada Trip in the Woods Barrel Aged Narwhal

Sierra Nevada Trip in the Woods Barrel Aged Narwhal is hitting shelves nationally.

Variants of this type are typically only found at Sierra Nevada’s taprooms. This time, you are in luck. Narwhal, the brewery’s imperial stout has been spending some time in bourbon barrels with red and black currants – both types of gooseberries. Red currants are a bit like muscadine grapes in flavor. Black – a bit like concentrated blackberries.

We age this rich, chocolatey Imperial Stout in bourbon barrels with a mix of both red currants and black currants for a pop of sweet and tart flavor. The deep, rich notes of the stout blend well with the berries in barrels to create complex flavors of coca and coconut with a mellow fruit undertone.

The base, which is barrel-aged Narwahl, is a big, boozy imperial stout. The berries muted the boozy aspects of this beer a bit. While we can’t say we are experts on red vs. black currants, this beer seems to be very black currant heavy. The mix of berries, chocolate and bourbon, turn this beer into a something of a cocktail, or dessert. You be the judge.

Sierra Nevada Trip in the Woods Barrel Aged Narwhal is avaialbe in limited quantities in 750 milliliter bottles.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Red Currants, Black Currants. Barrel Aged. Bourbon. )
Availability: 750ml Bottles, Corked & Caged. D
