Surly Hell Promoted to Year Round

Surly Brewing announced that Hell will now be a year round offering. The summer seasonal proved to be so popular, the Todd Haug (Surly Brewmaster) said via Twitter: “Yup HELL Forever”.

Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is not filtered and fermented with lager yeast. American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well… hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

Style: Keller/Zwickel Beer
Hops: Sterling
Malts: Pilsner, Carahell
Yeast: German Lager

Availability: 16 oz cans, Year Round

5.1% ABV

Surly Cans Fest, Brews Wet [PICS]

Surly Brewing (Minnesota) is busy packing Fest, and brewing Surly Wet. Wet is a popular “wet-hopped” beer made with simcoe hops picked from the vine in Yakima Valley and added to the brew in 36 hours.

About SurlyFest:

SurlyFest is brewed with three different types of Rye and a single variety of American Hops. Malted Rye, Flaked Rye, and Crystal Rye impart a distinctive biscuit flavor to the lush Vienna Malt body, and dry-hopping with Sterling Hops adds bright, floral hop aromas. A single hop, dry-hopped, rye lager bier? Ja!

About Wet:

4,800 lbs of hops picked fresh in Washington and shipped to Minnesota immediately. We brewed this beer three days later. This is a hop-forward beer, dry with subdued malt flavors.

Look for both of these offerings in Late Sept-October, 2012.

The Inspiration Behind Surly SŸX Artwork

Surly release SŸX next week. The demonic artwork has an interesting backstory. The brewery just explained it’s origin on Facebook.

I need to share a story about the SŸX art. The demon is based upon some work from a late friend and colleague, Brad Krisko. A talented sculptor and all around artist, Brad worked with us at MNFX for some time before going out to Los Angeles to become an FX artist on feature films. While there, he spent several years at Stan Winston Studio, working on, among other things, Jurassic Park, Batman, and Terminator 2. Following that, he returned to Minnesota and worked with us again.

We sadly lost Brad to suicide many years ago. His great artistic ability couldn’t seem to soothe his troubled soul.

This skull was created by him and was briefly available as a model kit, called “Orc Skull”. When I began to create the demon for the art, Brad’s skull was sitting on a shelf near my workstation. I decided to evoke his work in my art as a means of tribute. Thanks for the inspiration, Brad. RIP.
