14,000 Bottles of Surly Pentagram Next Week

Surly Brewing’s Pentagram arrives next week. Pentagram is an American wild ale aged in wine barrels. Pentagram made an appearance at the Great American Beer Fest last fall, and brewer Todd Haug mentioned it will all but become a yearly release.

100% Brettanomyces Dark beer fermented stainless and aged in used red wine barrels. “Brett” is a unique yeast strain that produces flavors that would be considered offensive if  they were not intentional. Flavors of sour  cherry, tobacco, oak and classic “Brett” barnyard funkbalanced by dark munich mall chewiness.

14,000 bottles will be dispersed into Surly markets next week. Party this Sunday. This is your heads up.

The Surly Brewer Just Meme’d You

Surly Brewing couldn’t get approval for their forthcoming Overrated IPA featuring a unicorn and fairies. (It’s evil and makes kids want to drink, so says the government.) I’m pretty sure you’d be hard pressed to find someone that wouldn’t want this beer can. What’s more metal than unicorns? Answer: Nothing.

Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

Is The Government Playing Favorites with Unicorn Art?

In light of the government’s recent issues with Surly’s Overrated West Coast IPA, we’re beginning to wonder why they’re playing favorites. There are quite a few other breweries out there with unicorns on their labels and names, why just hate on Surly? Maybe they always wanted the pink My Little Pony as a child? Maybe it’s because they’re adorably cartoonish? Either way, Pipeworks Brewing alone has 4 different beers featuring unicorns on the label and name including Galaxy UnicornUnicorn’s RevengeNinja vs. Unicorn, and Santa vs. Unicorn. Dear Government, I call shenanigans!

Special thanks to @shep133 and @cobbledbrewer for the reminder about these other beers!

Surly Learns The Government Doesn’t Like Cartoon Ponies

Surly is laughing. The government isn’t. Surly Brewing was/is planning Overrated West Coast IPA in cans. The artwork (above) makes us think My Little Pony. As funny as this label is – the U.S. government doesn’t feel the same way. Unicorns and rainbows are apparently appealing to underage drinking.

Whether or not you feel the same way – I guess rules are rules. Look for Overrated West Coast IPA on the horizon from Surly.
