Sierra Pale Ale Helps Rivers

Beer is mostly water. Bad water bad beer. Breweries like SweetWater Brewing understand this, so does Sierra Nevada.  2011 marks the 3rd Annual “Wild Rivers” campaign.  From August 1 – September 10, 2011, a portion of the sales of Pale Ale go to the Western Rivers Conservancy based in Portland, Oregon.

Press Release

CHICO, CA — Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.–a pioneer in sustainability and craft brewing–announced today the launch of the third annual “Wild Rivers” campaign. Wild Rivers is a campaign dedicated to helping preserve vital waterways across the country.

For every 12-pack of Pale Ale and Sierra Nevada seasonal beer purchased in the U.S. from August 1 through September 10, Sierra Nevada will donate a portion of proceeds to river conservation-focused partners across the country, including Western Rivers Conservancy, a non-profit based in Portland, Oregon.

“Great water is essential to making great beer,” said Ken Grossman, Founder and President of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. “We are committed to preserving natural waterways both in the Sierra Nevada that offer our inspiration, and across the nation.

“We measure the success of our business not only on the quality of our beer, but also our contribution to a healthy environment,” Grossman said.

The “Wild Rivers” partnership, which will be visible at retailers across the nation, aims to raise awareness and increase stewardship of rivers that sustain our communities and ecosystems. Since the program’s start in 2009, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has donated more than $170,000 to its partners to help preserve vital waterways across the country. A portion of these proceeds have supported Western Rivers Conservancy’s work to create parks and protected natural areas along rivers like the Klamath in California, the John Day in Oregon, the Hoh River in Washington, and the Gunnison River in Colorado.

“Sierra Nevada has blazed a trail of environmental stewardship,” said Phil Wallin, President of Western Rivers Conservancy. “We are proud to partner with such a great company to advance our mission to protect the great rivers of the West.”

Besides Western Rivers Conservancy, the 2011 Wild Rivers campaign will also support the Ohio River Foundation, Delware Riverkeeper, The River Project, and the Southeast Watershed Forum.

Ex Gratia Benefits Alex’s Lemonade Stand

Another feel good beer story. Stoudt’s Brewing has created “Ex Gratia” benefitting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).  The foundation began with Alex, a little girl diagnosed with childhood cancer.  She created a lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money to give to doctors to help find a cure for children with cancer.  One day she made a whopping $2000 dollars.  Sadly, Alex lost the fight in 2004 at the age of 8.

The foundation is still active, helping raise money for cancer research.  Enter Stoudt’s.  Jodi Stoudt teamed up with Osteria in Philadelphia.  Osteria provided Lemon marmalade, which Stoudts infused into the brewing of Karnival Kolsch.   The result is a light, sweet, lemony beer great for summer, great for the cause.

The kegs will be distributed around Philadelphia.  All proceeds be donated to ALSF.  A pint will sell for about 8 dollars a glass; each keg raising about $1000 dollars.  Check out the video about the beer. Ex Gratia is latin for “Of Favor.”  (Love Jodi’s hat she’s wearing in the video BTW.)

SweetWater Brewing Raises 21K At Spin For Kids

SweetWater Brewing recently released Crank Tank Rye’d Ale in conjunction with their 5th Annual Spin For Kids Fundraiser.  21,000 – the money raised by the event benefits Camp Twin Lakes, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing children with serious illness and special needs and their families a recreational outlet. (Direct quote. Couldn’t say it better myself).   The event was a great success, for all involved.  Craft beer really gives back.

ATLANTA: This fall SweetWater Brewing Company challenged Atlantans to jump on their bikes with Team SweetWater as they celebrated the mission of Camp Twin Lakes with a new brew, Crank Tank Rye’d Ale and their Fifth Annual Spin for Kids Fundraiser Oct. 23-24, 2010.  The local boys created their latest beer to raise money and awareness for this non-profit organization dedicated to providing children with serious illness and special needs and their families a recreational outlet.  Well, they did just that!  Nearly 21K was donated on behalf of SweetWater Brewing Company to the camp as part of the over $280,000 raised through Spin For Kids as well as 30 GIANT mountain bikes for the campers and counselors to use at the camp.

“Camp Twin Lakes has made a profound impact on my life,” said Freddy Bensch — SweetWater’s Big Kahuna.  “It provides a safe and nonjudgmental environment for children with illnesses and special needs — something they can’t always find in the real world.  SweetWater is proud to connect with a great cause, participate, brew and most of all give back!”

COMING SOON: SweetWater Crank Tank Rye’d Ale

It’s never too early to get excited about new beer.  Especially beer for a GREAT cause.  SweetWater has just released details about their beer coming from their now infamous Dank Tank.  It’s called Crank Tank Rye’d Ale and it benefits Camp Twin Lakes based right here in Georgia.  Twin Lakes is a not-for-profitorganization that offers year-round recreational, therapeutic, and educational programs for children facing serious illnesses and other physical, emotional and life challenges.  From Sweetwater-

“SweetWater Brewing Company is inviting Atlantans to jump on board with Team SweetWater as they celebrate the mission of Camp Twin Lakes and their Fifth Annual Spin for Kids Fundraiser Oct. 23-24, 2010.  The local boys created their latest beer, Crank Tank Rye’d Ale, and established their own bike team to benefit this non-profit organization dedicated to providing children with serious illness and special needs and their families a recreational outlet.  The camp teaches children to overcome obstacles and grow in their confidence and capabilities, and SweetWater’s mission is to accomplish something similar:  To raise awareness for this meaningful cause while taking on a challenge.  So, dust off that old bike, grease up the wheels (and your joints) and get ready for a ride that impacts lives.

SweetWater’s Big Kahuna, Freddy Bensch, was so inspired after visiting Camp Twin Lakes, which he calls “a rare oasis for thousands of special needs children and their families,” that he felt he had a responsibility to spread the word about the camp and its mission and created a new beer to get the word out.  SweetWater will feature information about the camp and ways folks can get involved on its 22oz Crank Tank Rye’d Ale labels launching early September.

“This camp made such a profound impact on my life,” said Bensch.  “It provides a safe and nonjudgmental environment for children with special needs — something they can’t always find in the real world.  The camp and these children will touch your heart.  We have always worked to make more than just great beer for our community, and SweetWater is proud to connect beer lovers with local organizations to make a difference.”

Want to come along for the ride? Cruise with the team at Camp Twin Lakes’ residential camp facilities in Winder and Rutledge, Georgia and then join in a post-race festival at the camp in Rutledge on Oct. 24th.  All ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the 5, 27, 47, 62 or 100-mile ride.  Team SweetWater’s goal: 27 miles (those beer bellies will be slowing ‘em down a bit!) To ride with Team SweetWater or to sponsor one of their riders — and receive a limited edition SweetWater and Spin for Kids shirt – visit www.spinforkids.org.  Can’t join a team?  Buy a Crank Tank at participating establishments and enjoy a lip-smackin’ brew with the satisfaction that you’ve contributed to a good cause.   And if all that good stuff isn’t enough motivation, SweetWater will also be giving away a Giant Boulder bike to one customer. Check one out at SweetWater displays in various stores from late August until early October and sign up for your chance to win on the SweetWater team page at www.spinforkids.org.”

Style: Rye Beer (I think?)

Availability: 220z Bombers.  Limited to Atlanta this year.  Potential wider distribution to other SW markets next year

Arrival: Early-Mid September 2010

6.2% ABV

Meet Clark. Silent Clark.

You meet the coolest people over a beer over a beer sometimes.   Last night I stopped by Taco Mac Metropolis for a drink, and @restaurantsATL was there.  He was talking… well I guess NOT talking to this guy Clark.  Clark doesn’t speak.   It’s not that he can’t – he won’t .  He’s dummied up to raise awareness about cancer.  Pretty tough to do?  It would be for me.   Clark only speaks through social media – Twitter, Facebook etc.  He’s been featured on CBS Atlanta, 11 Alive, Mashable, ABC News just t o name a few.

While we were all “talking” last night Donald Munroe – general partner of this Taco Mac location proposed something to aid in Clarks efforts.  Clark has a little over 8 days left in his silence.  For every person that donates $10 dollars to Clark in the next 8 days and can show the receipt to a Taco Mac manager AT the Metropolis location – @DAMunroe will buy you your second beer.  Out of his own pocket! How’s that for incentive????

How to donate:  Head over to SilentClark.com and click ways to help.  There is a donate now button.  When you donate, you will receive an email you can print and take with you.

So GO. NOW. It’s a great cause, and now there’s beer in it for doing a good thing!! GO. NOW. Then come back and enjoy my site 🙂

Special thanks to Donald Munroe for your generosity!

P.S.  The most endearing thing Clark “told” me last night is that he hasn’t been able to tell his wife he loves her.  They have been married less than a year.
