Terrapin Easy Gose to debut year-round in April

Terrapin Easy Gose

New year-round beer for 2017 – Terrapin Easy Gose.

In summer 2016, Terrapin launched Watermelon Gose. Easily one the best hot weather beers we had last year. Releasing a gose on a large scale like that taught the brewery something. People love the gose style.

Watermelon Gose will return in time again for hot weather, alongside Terrapin Easy Gose.

Easy Gose will feature grapefruit peel, creating a beer that’s tart, light, and citrusy.

Terrapin Easy Gose will be a 12 ounce can and draft release, year-round

Style: Gose (w/ Grapefruit Peel, Coriander.)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft. Year-Round.

S’mores inspired beer: Terrapin Chubby Bunny

Terrapin Chubby Bunny

Terrapin Chubby Bunny is the both the 4th release in the brewery’s employee brew-off series, and the 29th Side Project Release.

A few years ago, the Athens, Georgia based brewery decided to put their employees to the [brewing] test. Internally, members of the Terrapin Tribe split up and got fermentationally weird. At the staff end of year party, each team presents their recipe, proposed name (which half the time has to be changed to make the government happy), and a skit relative to the beer. Trust us, it gets pretty hilarious.

RELATED: Terrapin Side Project Series

This year’s winning recipe is an imperial s’more milk stout, aka Terrapin Chubby Bunny. Inspired by the fireside favorite, Chubby features local Condor Chocolates, graham cracker, and marshmallows.

Chubby Bunny is our 4th installment of our employee home-brew competition. This Imperial milk stout breaks all the rules by combining flavors of graham cracker, toasted marshmallow and dark chocolate. This mouthful of a stout will challenge any beer lover to say “Chubby Bunny”

Previous employee brew-off releases include Pineapple Express, Saison Poivre, and Turtleneck.

Terrapin Smoke on the Porter is Side Project #28

Terrapin Smoke on the Porter can

Terrapin Smoke on the Porter is now the brewery’s Side Project #28.

The base beer is a Baltic porter brewed with beechwood smoked malt, that the brewery will be been aging on French oak until this fall release. In case you have a song rolling around your head, the beer is a nod to Deep Purple’s classic Smoke on the Water, released in 1972.

RELATED: Terrapin Hi-10 (Mango Habanero Double IPA)

Like music to your ears, “Smoke on the Porter” is that song you just can’t seem to get out of your head. Brewed with beechwood smoked malt and aged on French Oak, this old world lager will keep you humming that familiar tune.

What to expect? Smoke might turn some people off. To get that out the way now, there is just a hint off the beechwood smoked malt. There is a good bit of chocolate. So…smokey chocolate with a hint of fresh oak in the finish. A candidate for rich desserts, vanilla ice creams, or cheesecakes. Hell, even hot wings. Get weird.

Terrapin Smoke on the Porter is headed to shelves in 12 ounce cans – a very limited release.

Style: Baltic Porter (French Oak Aged)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft.
Debut: November, 2016

8.5% ABV

Terrapin will open a pilot brewery at the new Braves Stadium

Athens, Georgia based Terrapin Beer Co. is building a new pilot brewery at Suntrust Park, the new home of the Atlanta Braves. The stadium opens in time for the 2017 season.

The build is separated into two parts: The Microbrewery, aka the ATL Brew Lab, and The Terrapin Taproom, which will feature Atlanta famous Fox Bros. BBQ. The Battery, a section adjacent to the stadium that will house both the ATL Brew Lab and the Terrapin Taproom, will be open year-round. Concessionaire Delaware North will be running the Terrapin Taproom.

The Brew Lab is a 5-Barrel system which will serve as a pilot system for the Athens, Georgia brewery as well. Terrapin co-founder “Spike” Buckowski mentioned at a media event yesterday that the brewery has never really had a pilot system, so this addition is especially new and exciting.

Construction on the taproom and ATL Brew Lab begins in November, with completion by the spring home opener in 2017.

Terrapin is already planning a few fun collaborations out of the ATL Brew Lab, including one they hope will be with a few notable ex-Braves players.

Terrapin Tart Cherry Wake-n-Bake to join Special Reserve Series

Terrapin Tart Cherry Wake-n-Bake

Terrapin Tart Cherry Wake-n-Bake, a new entry in the brewery’s Special Reserve Series.

The base beer is an oatmeal imperial stout, brewed with a special coffee blend from Athen’s, Georgia roaster Jittery Joes. (The coffee blend is actually available for purchase as well.)  The brewery has spiked the stout with Montmorency cherry juice.

When life gives us cherries, we make “Tart Cherry W-n-B.” Brewed with real Montmorency cherry juice from the USA, and freshly roasted “Wake and Bake” coffee from Jittery Joe’s, this version of our classic Coffee Oatmeal Stout takes on an impeccable fruit forward dimension.

Other editions of Wake-n-Bake include Cinnamon Roll’d, that has been released a few times in the past, as well as French Toast W-n-B.  This year, the brewery will can the base Wake-n-Bake for the first time.

Terrapin co-founder opens UpCountry Brewing in Asheville

UpCountry Brewing Logo

In late July, Athens, Georgia based Terrapin Beer Company announced they were selling a majority stake of the company to Tenth & Blake, the craft division of MillerCoors. Beer Street Journal reported at the time that John Cochran, co-founder of Terrapin would be the only employee departing.

We knew his story wouldn’t end there.

Cochran has 21 years in the brewing industry, and as far as we’re concerned, his love for the American beer industry is unsurpassed. So meet his new endeavor – UpCountry Brewing.

Current Asheville based Altamont Brewing has been sold to Cochran. He will assume the space and assets in the West Asheville area and change the name and brand identity to UpCountry Brewing. He will also be refitting the adjacent restaurant space formerly known as Nona Mia. Once the redesign is complete, the space will serve “Appalachian Eats.”

Having known Cochran for years, we can attest to his love of the burgeoning beer scene in Asheville. The city is a dreamland of opportunity when compared to Terrapin’s home state of Georgia with its restrictive, and at times unbalanced, approach towards breweries. John has been very vocal and active in Georgia beer politics over the past few years, so it’s no wonder he chose a state with a more favorable approach to the growing beer industry.

UpCountry Brewing’s staff includes owner John Cochran,  Brewer Jordan Veale, General Manager James Mayfield, Assistant GM Nicole Flynn and Executive Chef Matt Kovitch.

UpCountry Brewing will make beers that are sessionable, thirst-quenching and easy drinking. Our customers are active folks who want to come in after a ride and enjoy a beer that cools them down, but doesn’t womp them with high alcohol content.”   – James Mayfield, General Manager

UpCountry Brewing is  located at 1042 Haywood Road, Asheville, North Carolina.

Interview with John Cochran to follow. Developing…
