Unknown Brewing Dirty Commie Heathen makes a 2nd appearance

Unknown Brewing Dirty Commie Heathen

Unknown Brewing Dirty Commie Heathen is making a second appearance at the end of the month. Last year’s release was very successful.

Unknown Brewing Dirty Commie Heathen is a Russian Imperial Stout that features over 4,000 pounds of grain used in the brewing process, Michigan tart cherries, and is aged with bourbon barrels. The 2016 recipe was dialed in a little more to the brewery’s liking.

Owner and Head Brewer Brad Shell is extremely happy with this years offering. This is only the second time ever this beer has been brewed and after last year Brad was able to make small tweaks to make it even better. Brad says, “This years Commie turned out amazing and I think people should hurry up and buy it before I drink it all!”

Unknown Brewing Dirty Commie Heathen will be available in 22oz bottles. The brewery recently added Atlanta, Georgia distribution. The state can expect this beer as well.

Other interesting bottle releases by the brewery include a lager brewed with 99 scorpions, and Vehopciraptor Double IPA.

Spotlight: Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness

Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness bottle

Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness is coming in December, the culmination of a year-long Angels Series.

2015 has seen the releases of Red Angel, Golden Angel, and White Angel. The final angel – Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness, has spent more time in the barrel than any Angel in the series, and that’s because of the Oloroso Sherry barrels. (Plus the metric ton of boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cherries that have been quietly adding flavor.) All total, that’s 3 tons of fruit, and 16 months of maturation.

Much like sour beer, Oloroso sherry (fortified wine), relies on oxidative aging and a protective pellicle to develop full, rustic flavors in these oak vessels.

Wicked Weed Angel of Darkness is a 500 ml bottle offering, that sold out in seconds.

We made a few trips to the brewery this year, staring at those Oloroso sherry barrels. What came out of it is as crazy as it sounds. As the beer warms up the taste is a fun game of which fruit is in my mouth. Plus sherry. Wicked Weed excels at making the wild/sour ales tart, while keeping the fruit fresh. Fantastic conclusion to a year of “Angels” from Wicked Weed.

The brewery re-brewed this beer at the end of 2015, set to return in 2016.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Boysenberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Cherries.)

Spotlight: Dogfish Head Higher Math, celebrating 20 years

Dogfish Head Higher Math

Dogfish Head (Milton, DE) celebrates 20 years of brewing this year. They are celebrating off-centered, and accordingly. Dogfish Head Higher Math has arrived.

The base beer is a golden ale, fermented with cherries on cocoa nibs, finishing at a bold 17% alcohol by volume. (Our initial post mentioned it was going for 20%.) Still one of the strongest beer in the the brewery’s history.

Due to it’s high ABV, that eliminates a small list of states that Dogfish Head currently distributes to from getting the the anniversary offering. Good rule of thumb for figuring this out – if you don’t currently receive Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, then you won’t see Dogfish Head Higher Math on your shelves.

Tasting this bold beer, the alcohol is present, along with the sour cherry juice. It is deceptively sweet which makes it easy to down 12 ounces of 17% beer. Share it, or wear a helmet when consuming.

Dogfish Head Higher Math in on shelves now in 12 ounce bottles. Happy 20th Dogfish Head. Can’t wait for 20 more years of what you put in our glasses.

Style: American Strong Ale (w/ Cherries, Cocoa Nibs)
Availability:
Release: October, 2015

20% ABV
