NOW TAPPING: Bell’s Oarsmen
Here’s a rare one. Bell’s Oarsmen hasn’t been in Atlanta before now. It was first bottled September of last year. It’s a berliner weisse with a lot of wheat malt. According to the brewery, a sour mashing method was used to give this beer some tart flavor.
Taste Expectations: The wheat shines through in this beer. It’s tart and becomes a bit more tart as it’s drank. Some bready flavor. Very sessionable.

Beer Spotlight: 5 Seasons West’s Watermelon Wheat
Back with a vengeance as it were. 5 Seasons West’s watermelon beer made it’s debut last summer at the brewpub. Let’s just say it was well received.
Watermelon starts off as an American Wheat ale brewed with copious amounts of German malts and wheat malts. Some specialty malts were also used for some extra complexity. Then comes the watermelon. Lots of watermelon. 600 lbs of locally grown organic watermelon. All 600 lbs of watermelon had to be peeled, de seeded, and then pureed. All of this had to be done in a little blender, so the process was time consuming. The pureed watermelon is then added directly to the serving tank, so the flavor is fresh and straight forward.
Crawford had this to say –
“It is so important to use real fruit and not an extract. You can really taste the difference.”
I couldn’t agree more. Real fruit makes a difference. Each glass has a fresh watermelon flavor that is not overwhelming, and is well balanced by the wheat flavor. This is a great hot weather beer. Remember, each glass is actually served straight from the serving tank with the watermelon suspended in it. It’s the freshest fruit beer you can have in Atlanta. Each glass also has a slice of fresh watermelon on the rim!

Cypress Street Celebrates Belgian Independence Day!
Hopefully you the fellow readers are familiar with American Independence Day – July4, 1776. (If you’re not, read a book.) Tomorrow – July 21st is Belgian Independence Day! How do you celebrate? Drink Belgian beer of course! Tonight’s Beer Geek Tuesday at Cypress Street features beers and food to highlight the Belgian Independence.
Following the Congress of Vienna in 1814, the small country of Belgium was joined with the Dutch state of Holland to form what would be called the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This forced integration, imposed by mainly Austrian and English powers, would last a scant 15 years before Belgium revolted and proclaimed independence for itself. July 21st, 1831 Belgium finally gained independence from the Dutch, with Leopold I becoming King of Belgium. It was declared a neutral country, which lasted until World War I.
Celebrating the independence of one of the worlds greatest beer drinking countries Cypress offers this beer lineup –
Rodenbach – Flanders Red Ale, 6% ABV. Easily one of the most well known flander’s red ales in the US. Sour cherry, with a complex malt profile.
Rodenbach 2007 Vintage – By the glass offering of this 3 year aged Grand Cru. The version is unblended straight from the wood vat.
Palm – Belgian Pale Ale, 5.4%. Flagship offering by this Belgian brewer. It’s a deep amber pale. Light and crisp. Glass giveways with this beer.
Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor – Belgian IPA, 8% ABV. Prime example of a Belgian IPA from Belgium. It’s hoppy, with a nice Belgian yeast funk.
Also – other Belgians from the usual Cypress lineup – St Bernardus Abt. 12, Chimay White, Chimay Blue, & Wittekerke.
Belgian Food Pairings will be offered by house Chef Travis Carroll. It all starts today at 7 pm!

Description – So I called Founder’s to get more info on Black Biscuit. Lots of Biscuit malt was used in this brew. It is aged in regular bourbon barrels, with molasses added. Black Biscuit has been described as a cross between a black ale and a baltic porter.
Taste Expectations – Oak, Chocolate, coffee, vanilla and alcohol. Molasses and chocolate in the finish. Lots of flavors to sort out. Complex, and fascinating.

Cypress Street Beer Geek Tuesday 7/6
Tapping tonight at Cypress Street’s Beer Geek Tuesday the very recent Terrapin/De Proef collaboration “Monstre Rouge” will be tapped. This beer hit shelves late last week and is already hard to find.
Just to recap – “Monstre Rouge” is dubbed an Imperial Flanders Red Ale. It’s based off of Terrapin’s Big Hoppy Monster, a red ale, with rye malt added. A brettanomyces yeast was added for souring, then it sat on toasted American oak. Rouge is a ONE TIME collaboration with famed Belgian brewer Dirk Naudts of De Proef Brewing in Lochristi, Belgium.
