Yazoo Fortuitous Releases 2/18

Yazoo Fortuitious will officially release on February 18th, 2012.  Thanks to odd Tennessee laws, the release has to be handled like this:

The main problem is that due to Tennessee’s archaic beer laws, we can’t sell high-gravity beer here (see my previous post from last year for the details of why).So here is how we plan to do it: We will open up the doors to the brewery at noon on Saturday, Feb 18th. From noon until 2 PM, everyone who comes in will get a free raffle ticket. Then at 2 PM, we will raffle off the 120 special certificates that will allow the holder to purchase up to four bottles of Fortuitous at a separate location (not far from the brewery). Whatever is not purchased on that Saturday will be available to the general public starting the following week. (Or maybe I’ll just keep it and drink it all myself – seriously, I’m considering it.)We don’t want people having to camp out or wait in lines outside to get this beer. As long as you get here in time to get a free raffle ticket, you will have a good shot at getting up to four bottles of Fortuitous. We want this to be fun, so feel free to bring something special to share with your fellow beer geeks (like us) while you wait for the raffle.

Fortuitous was previewed briefly at Nashville’s 12 South Winter Warmer Festival in December.  It’s a smoked porter “Sue” that accidentally went sour, then was barrel aged in Corsair barrels.  There are 800 bottles to be released.  [Yazoo]

Yazoo Sly Rye Porter Headed For Bottles

Yazoo Brewing will finally debut Sly Rye Porter in a few weeks.  It was orignially slated for release last fall, but Yazoo has been working on production issues and expansion.

A rich, chocolaty English Porter with a clean finish. We use the finest floor-malted Maris Otter malts from England, the same malts used for the best single-malt scotch. A portion of malted rye gives a spicy, slightly dry finish.
Style: Porter (w/ Rye)
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft

5.7% ABV, 28 IBUs

Yazoo Hop Project #63

Yazoo Brewing is shipping Hop Project #63.  The project is a way for brewmaster Linus Hall to experiment using any hops he can get his hands on.

Linus on #63

This is the one I personally have been really anticipating. Last year I managed to get my hands on just a little bit of Australian Galaxy hops, which we used as just a finishing hop in one of the Hop Projects. But we couldn’t make very much of it, and I went back to trying to source a larger amount. Well, we got lucky and found enough this year to do a nice long run of Hop Project #63, featuring this great hop from down under, in both a flavor and aroma hop role. It’s got a wonderfully ripe fruity nose, with a long, lingering, and clean bitterness. We made 160 bbls of it so far (equivalent to about 2000 cases) so we should be able to get some out to all the areas that sell Yazoo Hop Project over the next month. Look for it in Nashville first, then Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis, Jackson and Vicksburg, MS; and very soon along the MS coast!

Style: IPA
Availability: 12oz bottles, limited draft.

PICS: Nashville’s 12 South Winter Warmer Fest 2011

12th South Winter Warmer

On December 10th, Nashville’s 12 South neighborhood saw the first Winter Warmer Festival. We’re talking stouts, winter warmers, barrel aged beers. It was chilly, making the whole theme even more perfect.  The fest saw the likes of Green Flash Brewing, Chattanooga Brewing, Craggie Brewing, Good People, Hat Trick (coming soon), Jackalope, Yazoo, Left Hand, Red Brick, Goose Island, Calf Killer, Oskar Blues, Jackie O’s,  Schlafly & more.  This event was small, but kick ass.  You missed out.  Nashville has a growing beer scene worth checking out.

Yazoo Fortuitous Debuts This Week

Yazoo FortuitousBeer can accidentally sour.  (Unless you’re making a sour of course.)   Just because the beer goes sour, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s gone bad.  Recently, Terrapin won a GABF medal for Beer Gone Good – a brown ale that went sour for the better.   Yazoo Brewing just found themselves in a similar situation recently.  Sue, the brewery’s smoked porter went off the sour deep end.   Linus Hall (Yazoo’s brewmaster) didn’t panic.  After trying “Sour Sue” he discovered it to be quite good. Downright – fortuitous.

That’s just what this new beer is called – Fortuitous.  The brewery has put the beer into 25.4 oz  bottles that will go on sale this week.  It was poured at the 12 South Winter Warmer Fest over the weekend, where sour lovers became instant fans.  When asked whether they could try to remake it for another release – Linus said – “Well, I need to figure out how I made this one first!”

Yazoo will announce when the bottles go one salesoon.

NOTE: 4:13pm.  Might be later than this week.  The brewery is waiting on labels…

Yazoo Hop Project #61

Yazoo Brewinghas released Hop Project #61:

For this batch, we used some Magnum at the beginning of the boil, and then Warrior and Cascade throughout the boil and for dry-hopping in the fermenter.

We have liked using Warrior but it can have a slight tea-like finish. So our goal was to see how well it blended with a classic citrusy hop like Cascade. It has the aggressive upfront bitterness we’ve come to expect from Warrior, but a mellow grapefruity flavor and aroma.

This batch, #61, will be available in middle TN, and in Knoxville. It’s marked NO61NOV14.11 on the label.
