Short’s Brewing
Shorts Releases Publican Porter Today
Short’s Brewing releases Publican Porter today. The beer is a full bodied porter, with hints of espresso and biscuit. Flavors include roasted malt, espresso and chocolate.
Short’s Publican Porter is brewed in honor of “public house” that sold ale to “port men” in the 1700’s. This piece of history surrounds the origin of the porter style.
Publican Porter is available in 12oz bottles and draft.
Style: Porter
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Seasonal.

Short’s Experimental IPA Hits Bottles
Today (Dec 23rd) marks the first bottle release of Short’s Brew’s Juicy Tree IPA.
Juicy Tree is an experimental India Pale Ale made with blue spruce tips, juniper berries, and cranberries.
Big aromatics of piney evergreen and sweet berries tingle the senses. After some slightly tart and tangy flavors up front, a harmonious balance between pleasant fruit sweetness and bitter pine is reached. A sizable malt bill, ample hop additions, and the floral fruity qualities of American Ale yeast all contribute to the symmetry of this beer. The finish in Juicy Tree (7.5% ABV, 65 IBU) is laced with a resiny stickiness that flows naturally into a lasting bitterness.
Short’s Juicy Tree is only available to brewpub patrons.
Style: IPA (Spruce Tips, Juniper Berries, Cranberries)
Availability: 12oz Bottles
7.5% ABV, 65 IBU
Short’s Brewing Captain Fantasy Collaboration Is A Fan Fav
Short’s Brewing’s 2013 Fan’s Choice beer is Captain Fantasy, a collaboration with Half Acre Brewing Company out of Chicago. The first edition of this collaboration dates back to 2011.
For this collaboration, the breweries chose a saison, and added pears and Sorachi Ace hops.
The result is a lighter bodied ale with a pale goldenrod color and subtle haze. Satisfying aromas of nutmeg and spice blend with bright fruity hop fragrances. A lively amount of carbonation cleanses and refreshes while leading into flavors of sweet pear, tart lemon, and pleasant herbal subtleties. The overall fruitiness is abruptly interrupted by an assertive hop bitterness that dominates the finish, turning noticeably dry.
Captain Fantasy is now available throughout Michigan
Style: Saison (w/ Pears)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Limited Draft
6.7% ABV
Short’s Bludgeons You Again on Nov 20th
This is the 3rd time Bludgeon Your Eye has been released. This black IPA is among the few offerings from Short’s that fit an actual style guideline. (Accidents happen!)
An India Black Ale, Bludgeon Yer Eye exists as a shining example that we at Short’s are capable of landing within stylistic guidelines (when those guidelines suit the beers we make). Intense fruity and floral aromas abound with a subtle malty fragrance reluctantly piercing through. A deep black color attunes the palate for rich, dark, roasted malt flavors. The unexpected twist comes in the finish when high hop bitterness takes over and resonates profoundly.
Bottles hit Michigan on November 20th.
Style: Black IPA
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. (Limited)
6.2% ABV, 75 IBUs
Short’s Brewing To Expand
Short’s Brewing Company is about to embark on a $1.2 million dollar expansion to their brewpub. The brewery is currently working to acquire lots adjacent to their current location.
For the expansion, the brewery has partnered with Ken Fifelski, the owner of the The Bellaire Pharmacy and two other store fronts that Short’s intends to expand into. The pharmacy will move across the road and continue to stay in business.
The new build will include a new retail shop, and create 20 more jobs. Construction should be complete by Summer, 2014.

Short’s Aorta Ale Returns For Round 2
For the second time since 2007 Short’s Brewing will be re-releasing their Aorta Double Red Ale as part of their Imperial Series.
“Though Aorta Ale contains only traditional brewing ingredients, subtle aromas of candy, brown sugar, and toasted malt are present. Flavors reminiscent of raisins or figs are noticeable upfront, but give way to a roasted, cocoa like bitterness that becomes magnified by high alpha hops. In contrast to the initial sweetness, it’s a heightened bitterness that dominates the finish of this full bodied beauty.”
The beer was named for Mark Mueller, a good friend of the brewery, who was undergoing aortic valve surgery. He has since recovered from said surgery and leads Short’s mountain bike team. 626 cases have been released statewide making it incredibly rare. Six packs, singles, and cases are also available at their Michigan pub while supplies last.
Style: Imperial Red Ale
