A Silver Medal for Maui La Perouse White

LAHAINA, MAUI, HI – 07 October 2011 – Maui Brewing Co. (MBC) is proud to announce that their La Perouse White won a silver medal in the Belgian-style Witbier category (Category #67) against 52 other entries at this year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF). This beer was developed and brewed by Kim Lutz, Lead Brewer, BrewPub Operations at MBC’s Kahana location.

The awards were announced on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Denver Convention Center during the 30th annual Great American Beer Festival. GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world.  This year’s competition topped last year’s entries by 11 percent, with 3930 beers vying for medals.  248 medals were awarded

in total, judged by 167 judges from nine countries. Entries were received from 526 breweries from 48 states plus Puerto Rico.

“I was ecstatic to hear ‘La Perouse’ over the speakers! We had, just two days earlier, announced this beer was to be our next limited release can for Spring 2012. I’m very proud of Kim in her efforts to perfect this lovely representation of Belgian Witbier brewed with local fruit,” commented Garrett Marrero.

Maui Brewing Co. is one of only two truly local Hawaiian breweries, brewing and packaging 100% of product in the state. Maui Brewing Co. and Hawaii Nui (on the Big Island) are very proud to be wholly produced in Hawaii. Maui Brewing Co. has been recognized as Hawaii’s #1 craft beer since 2005 and the company has a strong commitment to the local economy, and the environment. MBC craft beers are packaged with the most eco-friendly materials. Although cans and bottles are both recyclable, bottles still break and pose a risk at beaches. The cans are manufactured on Oahu and designed by local Maui artists; they have the added bonus of protecting the beer in the best possible manner, protecting the product from both light and oxygen damage which can seriously compromise the taste. Plastic rings are dangerous to marine life and therefore, a unique, recyclable plastic carrying device is used to hold the products. The spent grain from beer production is donated to local ranchers for cattle feed and composting. Maui Brewing Co. is also very active in several local Hawaii charities.

Founder Garrett Marrero and his wife, Melanie, operate a 7-barrel brewpub at the Kahana location as well as a 25-barrel production brewery and canning facility in Lahaina.  Maui Brewing Co. is a truly local beer as 100% of their products are made in Hawaii.

Stone Quingenti Belgo Barleywine: Bourbon & Red Wine Editions

Stone’s Quingenti Millitre Series kicked off in July.  It’s Stone’s new barrel aging program.  A great idea from one of the fastest growing breweries in the United States with only one problem.  The beers are extremely rare.  Unless you are reading this in or geographically near to San Diego, California, there is little change you will taste the awesome that lies within these bottles.  However being beer geeks, or at the very least- beer interested, we like to know what’s up.  So here’s whats up.

The Quingenti series has featured 2 beers to date.  Stone/Maui/Ken Schmidt Coconut Porter, and 2010 Stone Old Guardian Barleywine aged in bourbon.  Next 2 releases feature Stone’s Belgian edition of OG, aged in bourbon and red wine barrels.

Label:
I write this the Tuesday following out Stone 15th Anniversary Celebration.  More than 6,500 folks came out to help us celebrate our 15 years of vein in the biz.   And as with every other year, we are blessed to find this one filled with many many interesting and exciting things.  New “Stone Quingenti Millilitre” 500ml cork-and-wire-bale program announced? Check.  New coffee table worthy book The Craft Of Stone Brewing Co:  Liquid Lore, Epic Recipes & Unabashed Arrogance released Late Sept 2011?  Check.  Another tome I co-authored called The Brewer’s Apprentice also coming out in Sept? Check.  New Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens -Liberty Station announced? Check.  New “Stone Company Store” in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego opened?  Check.  Stone Europe announced? The idea, check.   The announcement of A building expansion to the south of the brewery that may allow us to eventually brew a half a million barrels per year? Check.  Impending secession from the city-state of Escondido to form our own Stonelandia? Uh, no, not yet.  We like Escondido!  Although it’s pretty amusing to ponder the thought… hmmm.. Stonelandia.  I like the sound of it!  Heh. OK back to the moment.  The thing I left out in the list above was the announcement that along with the hotel and event space mentioned, we’ll have a new barrel-aging room.  Enough room from many hundreds of barrels, which will mean a future filled with a lot more of the likes of what you have here in your hands.  You could call it “a tasty barrel-aged future” if you like.  I think I will.

Style: Barleywine (Belgian yeast)
Availability: 500ml bottles. Estimated 550 bottle yield.
Release:  Stone will announce how they will be released

Maui Brewing Hits Arizona, Nevada

[UPDATED] – Maui Brewing (Maui, Hawaii) just announced their beers are headed to Arizona & now Nevada .  They just signed a distribution agreement with Republic National Distribution (AZ) & Cépage Selections (NV.)  Garrett Marrero on the distribution expansion in Arizona:
”Whether you enjoy rafting or boating — or just hanging out along the shores of the state’s beautiful beaches, we are happy to be able to share our canned craft beers with the people of Arizona.  With glass not allowed on the rivers, cans are the practical choice for all outdoor enthusiasts and starting very soon, our beers will be available locally. We’re proud to be giving folks several other canned craft beer choices and excited to soon see them ‘rolling down the river’ with a Maui beer in hand!”
About Nevada:
”Vegas is often referred to as the ‘ninth island’ due to the long-standing connection between Hawaii and Vegas so it’s only fitting that it’s our ninth distribution territory; what can I say? They wanted real Hawaiian beer!”
Recently, the brewery expanded distribution to Texas, and introduced Flyin High IPA.  Maui has 2 locations in Hawaii.  A 7 barrel brewpub, and 25 barrel production facility.  Both are operated by founder Garrett Marrero, and his wife Melanie.

Quingenti Millilitre Series, Release #1

So Stone Brewing announced they are barrel aging.  The “Quingenti Millilitre” coming soon, with this beer kicking it all off.  Kona Coffee Macadamia Coconut Porter.  A collaboration between Maui Brewing, Stone, and home brewer Ken Schmidt.  The beer was released late 2009 in 12 ounce bottles by Stone.  This revamped version finds the coconut porter aging in bourbon barrels

Label:
What a great beer for our very first release of our new 500ml bottle size!  We’re reserving this bottle for occasional limited releases of very special beers, and there’s no question that the Ken Schmidt/Maui/Stone Bourbon Barrel Aged Kona Coffee, Macadamia, Coconut Porter qualifies as just such.  A while ago, we secretly squirreled away two oak barrels of this beer for a year+ nap and some resulting bourbonification.

It’s cool to reflect on the fact that our now-yearly collaborations with local homebrewers are not just an acknowledgement of the amazing homebrew scene here in SoCal, but of our own homebrewing roots.  Steve was quite an accomplished homebrewer when I met him in the early 90’s, and I think together we’ve accomplished quite a lot between then and today!

As our head brewer, Mitch, can attest, this beer was not easy to make (the sheer volume of the fancy ingredients alone was a bear),  and the wait has been long for the barrel-aged version, but worth it.  I look forward to relaxing at home with it — maybe on now, and one in a few more years!  Cheers from me, Steve, Mitch, Ken, Garret and the entire Stone Team!

Availability: 500 ml bottles, corked & caged. 1st edition brewery only release
