Heavy Seas 20 Year Storm celebrates the double decade mark

Heavy Seas 20 Year Storm

Heavy Seas 20 Year Storm will mark the two decade mark for the Baltimore brewery.

The story of Heavy Seas is one of building a brewery that we personally love. Brewery founder Hugh Sisson wanted to build a brewpub so badly, he lobbied the Maryland legislature in 1987. That success allowed him to build Sisson’s Tavern. In 1994, he left there to form Clipper City Brewing. For years you saw beers released under the Clipper City brand, the first beer using the Heavy Seas name was Winter Storm. A few years ago, Heavy Seas became the unified brewery name.

As for Heavy Seas 20 Year Storm, the base beer is an imperial extra special bitter, aged in bourbon barrels for 75 days.

“When I started brewing at Sisson’s in 1989, I had no idea the industry would ever get so big,” says Hugh Sisson. “Back then, we just wanted to produce beers with flavor – and recreate the concept of small scale, artisanal beer.  I am grateful for the opportunities we have had to nurture the growth of our industry in Maryland, and hope that this 20th anniversary for Heavy Seas is seen for what it really is – a milestone for Maryland beer as a whole.”

Heavy Seas 20 Year Storm debuts on December 7th, 2015. (Their birthday is December 8th).

Heavy Seas Smooth Sail Arrives in April

Heavy Seas Smooth Sail Cans

Heavy Seas Smooth Sail Summer Ale arrives in April.

The brewery just launched their first year round beer in more than a decade, Crossbones Session IPA. The barrel aged, limited series known as Uncharted Waters, has a few new releases on the way.

Perfect for warm weather, Smooth is a wheat ale, brewed with orange and lemon peel.

…Brewmaster, Chris Leonard, “Smooth Sail Summer Ale is a beer that has been in development for quite some time. The goal was to produce a light, refreshing, flavorful beer that appeals to active folks and will become an integral part of warm weather fun. The beer is more than 20% malted wheat, giving it an airy mouthfeel and a frothy head. We’ve employed a neutral strain of “wheat” yeast to produce a clean tasting beer that is delicate on the palate. American hops are introduced late in the boil to impart a crisp flavor dimension. Finally, dried orange and lemon peel went into in our hopback to provide a fruity, citrus aroma – without adding sweetness…

Heavy Seas Smooth Sail Summer Ale will be available only in cans and draft.

Style: Wheat Ale (w/ Lemon Peel, Orange Peel.)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft.
Release: April, 2015

Heavy Seas Launches New Desert Island Series, February 19th

Heavy Seas Desert Island Series

Heavy Seas Beer (Baltimore, MD) is launching a new, draft only lineup, called the Desert Island Series. The lineup will feature one off releases designed by members of the brewery.

According to brewmaster, Chris Leonard: “Rich caramel maltiness adorns the first offering in our Desert Island Series – a strong Scottish Ale at 8% ABV. This interpretation of the classic Scottish style is warming and malty while maintaining an earthy hop balance. Dark amber in color, rich fig aromas and toasted caramel flavors dominate this hefty tipple. If you can’t get yourself to a desert island, this brew is the perfect answer to the winter chill.”

Each offering is limited to 100 barrels (3,100 gallons) at select bars across Heavy Seas 18 state distribution starting in February 19th, 2015. Scottish Ale was designed by Team Leader Chris Schultz.

The Heavy Seas Desert Island Series will feature a Schwartzbier in April, an American Honey Amber Ale in June, a “New World” Saison in August, a Smoked Dunkel in October, and a Dopple Sticke Alt in December.
