NEW: Timmerman’s Framboise

These 2 offerings are new to the United States. They are both lambics, i.e. beer’s that have had fruit added after the beginning of spontaneous fermentation. Brouwerij Timmermans is based in Belgium.

Commercial Description:
Its aroma evokes the perfumes of a lovely summer. Its strawberry flavour confirms the nose’s impression  without sweetened saturation. Moreover, it’s even enhanced by a real feeling of freshness, recalling those tiny green granules that are found around ripened strawberries. Its taste is consistent and spreads very quickly throughout the mouth to finish its journey on a touch that is fruitier rather than sweetened.

Style: Fruit Lambic

Flavor Offerings: Framboise (Raspberries, pictured) & Strawberry

Taste Expectations: Fruit! Strawberry, or raspberry respectively.  These lambics are fruity & light.  Very easy drinking. Almost not tasting like beer.

Availability: 11.4 ounce/ 4pks.

4% ABV – Both Strawberry & Raspberry

SEASONAL RETURN: Abita Pecan Harvest

Summer is hanging on literally by hours.  This update is  a couple of days behind, but as fall creeps in Abita’s Pecan Harvest arrives.  Pecan Harvest is part of the Abita Springs, Louisiana breweries’s Harvest series – alongside Strawberry Lager, and Satsuma Wit.

Commercial Description:
Pecan Harvest Ale is made with real Louisiana pecans that have been toasted to perfection. That makes it something really special, because most beers with a nutty flavor or aroma aren’t made with real nuts. The natural oils from the Louisiana pecans give the ale a light pecan finish and aroma.

Style: American Brown Ale

Taste Expectations: This beer is brewed with pecans, so expect it! Strong malt profile – caramel is pronounced. Biscuit, nuts. Nice and not too aggressive.

Food Pairings: From Abita – red meat, seafood, gouda cheese, and no surprise here, it’s also great with nuts! Try Pecan Harvest with Gouda cheese

Availability: 12oz/6 pks. Limited fall seasonal.

5% ABV

Der Biergarten Opens In Atlanta!

Beer gardens originated in Bavaria somewhere during the 19th century.  During this time,  dark lagers were in fashion.  King Ludwig I of Bavaria issued a degree that these dark lager beers had to be brewed in the cold months. (Lagering requires colder temperatures than top fermenting ales do.)  As the weather turned warmer, these lagers still required colder temperature to maintain freshness and flavor.   Refrigeration as we know it was still many years away.  As a result, breweries dug beer cellars along the Isar River in order to keep the beer cold.  As an added step, trees were planted over thehe cellars to keep the cellar a few degrees cooler.

In natural progression the beer cellar became more than a storage space.  These dark lagers were served from the cellar.  Tables and chairs were set up under the trees above the beer cellars and thus the beer garden was born.  King Ludwig I (aka Crazy King Ludwig) issued a decree that food cannot be served by the beer garden, causing the patrons to bring their own food.  While Ludwig’s decree is no longer in force, it is still a common practice for patrons of beer gardens in Germany to bring in their own food.

Atlanta gets it’s own beer garden Wednesday! Der Biergarten opens its doors at 300 Lucky Street downtown Atlanta featuring a German flair that was lacking in the downtown scene.  Expect authentic German beer and food (Brats and wursts, strudels, pretzels etc.)  Der Biergarten is is 7,000 square feet with flat panel tvs.   More importantly a big German beer list:

Warsteiner Pilsner
