Innis & Gunn Releases Smoke Beer Collaboration

A new collaboration from Innis & Gunn (Edinburgh, Scotland) has hit the market in the United Kingdom. The winner of the bartender showdown, Innis & Gunn Smokin’ Gunn is a smoke beer collaboration brewed with David Ashton-Hyde. Hyde is the head bartender at The Hinds Head in Bray.

Inspired by his love of Canadian and American whiskies, and a weakness for pancakes and maple syrup, David wanted to create a beer that would make a perfect after-dinner drink. Smokin’ Gunn is a rich, robust and complex smoked beer.

The beer uses malts smoked over beach wood to give Smokin’ Gunn a slight smoky hint. In true Innis & Gunn fashion, the beer is aged in bourbon casks.  On sale now in the Innis & Gunn store.

Style: Smoke Beer (Barrel Aged. Bourbon)
Hops: Super Styrian, Northern Brewer
Malts: Oak-smoked I & G Ale Malt, Roasted Barley

Availability: 11.2oz Bottles (330ml)

Exclusive First Look: Innis & Gunn’s First IPA

In late October, I got the opportunity to sit down with Dougal Gunn Sharp, the founder of Innis & Gunn. He founded the craft brewery in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2002.

The flagship beer – Original got it’s start as the by-product of something else Sharp was hired to do, season barrels for ale finished whiskey. Basically, the rest is history.

Since the debut of Original, the brewery has evolved their barrel aged line up to include offerings like Rum Aged, Cognac Aged, Irish Whiskey CaskBourbon Barrel Stout & more. In this second part interview with Dougal, he runs down some special offerings currently in market in the United States. Currently in market you’ll find Oloroso Cask, Scottish Porter, Bourbon Barrel Stout, and Canadian Cherrywood, but also gives you the exclusive first look at a 2014 offering – Toasted Oak IPA.

Don’t miss the part one, the history of Innis & Gunn.

Beer Street Journal Video: The Story of Innis & Gunn

Beer Street Journal (ok, it’s just me), got a rare opportunity to spend some time with the Founder and Master Brewer of Innis & Gunn, based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

If you live on the east coast of the United States, chances are you’ve seen one of the iconic bottles with the Innis & Gunn branding on it. For me, my first taste of Innis & Gunn Original opened up the world of barrel aged beer for me. I’ve never forgotten it.

I’ve always wanted to know more about this beer, and a few days with Dougal gave me a new perspective on the brewery and its origins. I think I love their beer even more now I spent time getting to know where it all came from.

There are two videos I did with Mr. Sharp. This first one gives you the background how the brewery got its start, and how Innis & Gunn Original is made. The second (coming soon) gives you the rundown on the current seasonals, and a sneak peek of a couple of things to come.

Innis & Gunn Oloroso Cask

Innis & Gunn is expanding their signature barrel aged lineup with Oloroso Cask this fall. Olorso means “scented” in Spanish, is a heavy, dark medium-sweet sherry. We have sourced rare, Oloroso Sherry casks to mature this limited edition. The beer is rich and spicy, with lots of nutty, caramel sweetness drawn from the wood.

Innis & Gunn’s First Oak Aged Porter: Winter Treacle 2012

Innis & Gunn looks to be switching it up a bit for their Winter Beer 2012. Last year’s edition featured the strong ale, aged in American bourbon oak.  Exclusively available in the three bottle gift pack.  2012 looks to bring you a porter aged in oak with molasses.  This is the first time the brewery has created a beer like this.

This is the first  time we have brewed and oak matured a Porter, which has been imparted with great depth of flavor thanks to the addition of some roasted wheat, crystal malt and molasses (rich, dark treacle.) These flavor packed ingredients, along with our long, slow signature approach to maturation, have created a sublime beer that is perfect for cold, dark winter nights.

Style: Porter (w/ Molasses, Oak Aged)
Availability: 11.2 oz bottles
Arrival: Winter, 2012
