Full Sail’s Dan’s Satin Stout Arrives 2/16

Full Sail Brewing debuts a new beer in their Brewer’s Share Experimental series – Dan’s Satin Stout.  Dan in this case is Dan Nakamura, Full Sail’s Assistant Operations Manager.  He’s intrigued by dark beer, so Satin Stout was as much research as it was fun.

What’s it taste like?

Dan’s Satin Stout is a creamy, dark beer with a soft and smooth finish and is complemented with the subtly sweet notes of chocolate and a hint of honey. A blend of pale, Munich, caramel, chocolate malt, and roast barley give Satin Stout its deep darkness and complex palate. Willamette and Mt. Hood hops provide just enough bitter to balance the sweet malitness; their slightly spicy aromas complement the floral notes from the addition of wildflower honey. Nitrogen conditioning is the final finishing touch providing a luscious satiny smoothness.

Dan Nakamura started at Full Sail over 21 years ago as a keg washer.  His position, like the brewery, as grown.

“I feel so fortunate to have a job I love in the place I grew up. I started my career at Full Sail as a keg washer over 21 years ago and have had the opportunity to move through many jobs at the brewery. In the process I have really gained a passion for great beer and a deep respect for the brewing art. When the opportunity to brew my own beer came up, I jumped at the chance to follow a long line of very talented Full Sail brewers. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this beer as much as I enjoyed brewing it. Cheers!” said Dan Nakamura.

There are a series of Meet the Brewer and the Beer” events coming soon. First on 2/16, 5:30 at the Tasting Room.  Next, Full Sail’s Zwickelmania brewery open house. On Saturday, February 18th.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit local charity Hospice of the Gorge.  The organization’s mission is to compassionately support patients and families through the end of life process.

Full Sail Brewing Company Releases Session Fest for the Holidays

Full Sail Brewing Company Releases Session Fest for the Holidays

Hood River, OR (October 2011) – Full Sail Brewing is excited to announce a new addition to the Session family of beers — Session Fest. It’s a holiday beer that comes in a stubby little bottle, makes a great stocking stuffer, and is the perfect beer to leave by the fireplace for Santa or to share with friends and family who may appreciate an approachable, yet flavorful holiday beer.

“When we decided to brew a special Session for the holidays, we knew right away what color it had to be: Red (and full-bodied). Next, we considered what kind of head it should have. Bright white was the obvious answer. And as for the label? Gotta be green, right? So there you have it. A new Session all decked out for holidays, ready to spread joy and cheer. Happy Holidays to one and all! And have a good Session,” said Irene Firmat, Full Sail’s Founder and CEO.

According to Full Sail Executive Brewmaster, Jamie Emmerson, “Session Fest is a Czech-style strong lager (gotta love the Czechs!) called polotmavé or literally “light dark or semi-dark.” Brewed with 2 Row Pale malt, Munich malt, Caramel malt and Wheat malt, and hopped with a blend of Glaciers and Cascades, Session Fest has a medium-to-full body balancing candy caramel and full malt flavors that are underscored by a spicy hoppiness that provides a nice perfume with citrus and pine overtones and a long clean finish.” 6.2% ABV 26 IBU

“From our Session Lager to our bourbon barrel-aged beers, balance and elegance are our defining brewery characteristics. We don’t brew our beers to win medals, but we are honored when we do,” added Firmat. Since its release in 2005, Session Premium Lager has earned eight gold medals and was recently voted “The Best Craft Lager” by craft beer lovers in a poll conducted by The Full Pint. In 2007 it was named The World’s Best Premium Lager at the World Beer Awards and America’s Best Premium Lager at the 2010 World Beer Awards. Session Black, released in 2009, has since earned 6 gold medals and was named “One of America’s Best Beers” by Men’s Journal Magazine. Both of Full Sail’s Session lagers have truly earned their place at the bar. Not to mention the barbeque. To view a list of Full Sail’s awards visit www.fullsailbrewing.com/awards

Full Sail Celebrates The Hop Harvest

Full Sail celebrates the hop harvest season with a long winded press release…

Hood River, Or — One of the secrets to the wonderful flavors in beer is hops. Located in the heartland of hops, every year the Full Sail brewers wait with thirsty anticipation for hop harvest and the chance to celebrate by brewing fresh hop beers. When the hops are at their peak, the Full Sail brewers truck out to the hop fields to collect the aromatic bounty. These seasonal wonders will go from field to brew kettle within a matter of hours and the magic begins.

“As brewers we are always reliant on nature’s bounty, from the quality of the barley harvest to how the hops weathered through the Oregon summer. But no moment brings this relationship to sharper focus than our fresh hop beers. This year, we celebrate the season’s first hops with four different beers: Lupulin, 3 brews of ale each featuring a different hop variety, and Hopfenfrisch, a Pilsner lager, showcasing a fourth variety. All highlight the brewer’s art as well as nature’s gift,” said Full Sail Executive Brewmaster, Jamie Emmerson.

“When we brew with fresh hops, timing is everything,” added Emmerson. “There’s such a small window of time to take advantage of these fresh hops. We need to get them into the brew kettle within hours of picking while their oils and resins are still at their peak. It takes five to seven times more hops to brew a fresh hop beer, and it’s absolutely worth it. The result is a subtle range of fresh hop flavors and aromas that you can only get brewing with fresh hops.”

According to Emmerson, each hop variety reaches peak maturity at a different time during harvest. “For this year’s fresh hopped beers we brewed four different batches waiting each time for the right hops. To highlight the unique flavor of the different hop varieties, we brewed three ale batches using the same malts, but different hops. The beer’s balanced caramel character and malt body really let the hops shine brightly through on the palate. In the first batch we used Tettnangs, a classic old world noble hop. This beer has a full herbal character with a smooth spiciness. Next, we used Centennial hops which add a large fruity orange grapefruit citrus flavor. Then we brewed with big bold Magnum hops, a high alpha hop that imparts more bitterness per pound. The Magnum hops lend a subtle citrus flavor with a crisp hop flavor and finish. The flavors are slight orange and lime. In the lager version, Hopfenfrisch Pilsner lager, we used fresh harvested Perle, a close cousin to the North Brewer hop, which give the beer a strong herbal character with classic pils hop aromas. Combined with our lager yeast, these flavors make for a classic pilsner beer which give the beer a pleasant hop character. This pale gold aromatic brew was left unfiltered to preserve its smooth body and honeyed malt flavors. This beer is crisp and clean.” The hop varieties were locally grown at Indie Hops, BC Hop farm and Sodbuster and Goschie Farms, which are both Salmon Safe certified hop growers.

Full Sail’s Fresh Hop beers are a veritable hop lover’s delight. The tiny lupulin glands inside the hop flowers, packed with sticky resins and essential oils, provide all that wonderful bitterness, flavor and aroma. These beers are all about hops; wet hopped, kettle hopped, hop back hopped, and dry hopped in the fermenter with 150 pounds of hops per batch. That’s 7.5 pounds of hops per barrel! Most products this fresh last only a short time. Please enjoy while you can.

Full Sail’s Lupulin and Hopfenfrisch are part of Full Sail’s rotating line up ofBrewmaster Reserve beers. They will be available in limited quantities September to November on draught in pubs throughout the Pacific Northwest and at Full Sail’s Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River and at theirRiverplace brewery in Portland, Oregon. They will also be available at various fresh hop beer festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest including the Hood River Hops Festival and the Yakima Fresh Hop Festival, both Saturday, October 1st. On October 8th they will be tapped at the Oaks Park Fresh Hop Festival in Portland, Oregon and at Fresh Hop Festival in Eugene. It will also be served September 30th at the Great American Beer Festival at the Oregon Brewer’s Guild booth in the Support Your Local Brewer’s pavilion.
