Mikkeller SpontanRosehip

Mikkeller SpontanRosehip

Mikkeller unleashes a new round of Spontaneous Series beers in 2013. Among them – SpontanRosehip. A rosehip is the fruit of the rose plant uses in various culinary recipes, but can be eaten raw. The flavor? Citrusy and of course, floral. The base beer a lambic, fermented in oak. SpontanRosehip will join SpontanElderflower, SpontanPeach and SpontanGooseberry.

Style: Lambic (w/ Rosehips)
Availability: 11.2 oz bottles
Arrival: TBA

7.7% ABV

Lambic, The Rundown.

A lambic is a spontaneously fermented beer. What’s that? The beer is exposed to wild yeasts and bacteria. In this case (most likely) these wild yeasts live in the oak of the barrels they are aged in. The result is a tart/sour tasting beer.

Mikkeller Spontaneous Series: SpontanElderflower

Mikkeller SpontanElderflower

Danish brewer Mikkeller has a spontaneous series beers, each with different fruit or spice addition.  The base beer is a lambic before the addition. Each one is a definite departure from lambics of the past. In 2013 look for a lambic release with elderflower – a floral herb that adds a tropical note to drinks and beer.

Style: Lambic (w/ Elderflower)
Availability: 11.2oz bottles
Arrival: TBA (2013)

7.7% ABV

Mikkeller Spontaneous Series: SpontanGooseberry

Mikkeller SpontanGooseberry

Mikkeller (Denmark) released a series of spontaneously fermented beers in 2012, each featuring a different fruit addition. 2013 should see a new round of those funky beers. The base beer for SpontanGooseberry is a lambic. Mikkeller threw in gooseberries for this addition.

The gooseberry is native to Europe, grows on a bush, and basically tastes like a sour grape. We’re pretty sure you can expect a base SpontanAle without fruit additions for your comparison.

Style: Lambic (w/ Gooseberries. Oak Aged)
Availability: 11.2oz bottles
Arrival: TBA (2013)

7.7% ABV

Timmermans Launches Pumpkin Lambic

The world’s oldest lambic brewery Timmermans has just launched a funky offering with pumpkin. Available for a limited time on draft and in bottles.

Timmermans brews only traditional Lambic; the basic beer that, from “spontaneous fermentation”, is used throughout the entire range. Brewing Lambic, without adding yeast, is a complex and subtle art requiring recipes and patience passed on by the family. Lambics survive thanks to a handful of Brussels breweries and the presence of two micro-organisms that exist only in the Senne Valley: Brettanomyces Bruxellensis and Brettanomyces Lambicus.

Style: Lambic (w/ Pumpkin)
Availability: 750ml bottles, Draft. Fall Seasonal
Arrival: October, 2012

4% ABV

A Spontaneously Fermented Coffee Beer From Mikkeller

Mikkeller would like to immediate recognize that their newest offering – Spontankoppi is anything but traditional.  A spontaneously fermented beer (exposed to wild yeast in the air), brewed with coffee.  Spontankoppi is anything but traditional.

There are probably several lambic brewers who rotate in their graves at the thought of this beer. And there are probably many more conservative-minded beer drinkers who’ll shake their heads. But for all of us adventurous beer geeks who are always on the lookout for a new and exciting taste, this is certainly an exciting novelty.

Style: Lambic (loosely based on style)  Brewed w/ coffee
Availability: 750 ml bottles.
Arrival: Late Summer, 2012
