CASK ALERT: Bell’s Best Brown

Friday at 6pm, The Porter taps a cask of Bell’s Brewing’s fall seasonal Best Brown Ale.  This is one of the most popular seasonal brown ales.

Commercial Description:
A smooth, toasty brown ale, Best Brown Ale is a mainstay in our fall & winter lineup. With hints of caramel and cocoa, the malt body has the depth to stand up to cool weather, but does not come across as heavy. This balancing act is aided by the generous use of American hops.

Style: English Brown Ale

Taste Expectations: Caramel & toffee.  Earthy hops, brown sugar.  Some cocoa, and nuts.

CASK ALERT: Hitachino Classic

Friday, 6pm Porter Beer Bar taps a wooden cask of Hitachino Classic in a wooden cask.  This IPA is brewed by Kiuchi Brewing in Ibaraki-ken Naka-gun, Japan

History:
In 1853 Koutami Kawamoto, who was a scientist, brewed the first Japanese beer.  In 1862 the Japanese magazine ‘Taiyo’ (which means Sun) published an article about the beer brewing process. “… sugar is changed to alcohol… when it seems to be enough, beer should be matured in cedar Taru…” – (translated by Miho Sugiyama) Hitachino Japanese Classic Ale is brewed according to this original Japanese brewing process.

Style: English IPA

7% ABV

CASK ALERT: Schneider Wooden Edel-Weiss

Many years ago, the beer brewed for Octoberfest was not necessarily the standard maerzen style lager beer associated with the event today.  The festival was in October rather than September, and it was often quite cold out, making necessary richer and stronger beers. Thus, Schneider’s Wiesen Edel-Weisse was made to be warming. It wasfull bodied, as the malt contained a fair amount of unfermentable sugar. In order to balance such a beer, it had to be brewed with more hops for balance, resulting in more noticeable hop character than is usually found in hefe weizens.

A wooden cask will be tapped today, 6 pm at Deckard’s Kitchen & Kegs.

CASK ALERT: Abita Vanilla Turbodog

Abita Turbodog is an English style brown Ale brewed in Abita Springs, Louisiana.  This offering is probably one of the brewery’s most popular brews.  It was first brewed as a specialty beer, then later moved to a year round flagship brew.  A few casks have emerged based on Turbodog, but with a twist – vanilla bean.

Beer Rundown:
Style: English Style Brown Ale
Hops: Willamette
Malts: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate

Vanilla Beans

Taste Expectations: Turbodog has notes of chocolate, & toffee.  Also some toasty nuttiness.  Vanilla in this cask shines throughout.

CASK ALERT: 5 Seasons “Great Pumpkin”

I love Halloween &  pumpkin beers.  This cask screams both.  I’m sitting here talking with Crawford Moran @5SeasonsWest about today’s beer.  “The Great Pumpkin” makes it’s debut tonight, with a twist- a great pumpkin.

This is where it gets freaking cool.  This big pumpkin is gutted  and filled with cask conditioned pumpkin ale.  The pumpkin itself will be tapped, and beer poured from the pumpkin.  Always pushing the limits!  I love it.

The Great Pumpkin taps tonight @ 7:55 pm!
