Upland Champagne Velvet Returns [VIDEO]

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, Upland Brewing plans to resurrect one of Indiana’s most beloved beers of all time. Champagne Velvet, a German-inspired pilsener that was the flagship of the Terre Haute Brewing Company. Most of us don’t remember a time when after work we visit the local bar to relax with a beer that was made just down the road, and Upload Brewing is hoping to bring back that bit of nostalgia. Inspired by brewery notes dating back to 1901, brewers at Upland have resurrected and recreated Champagne Velvet to its former glory.

Style: Pilsener
Availability: on tap, bottles
Arrival: April 2013

Fall Release Updates From Upland Brewing Co

A few things to look out for from Upland Brewing Co. (Bloomington, IL)

Oktoberfest will be available the second week of September. Our Oktoberfest is a traditional Bavarian lager featuring all-German malts and rare German hops. This dedication to authenticity produces a beer that would be as at home in Munich as it is here in the Midwest United States. The aroma is authentic, the taste sweet and malty, and the finish crisp and hoppy; perfect for a beautiful fall day! Speaking of…Be sure to get to our Oktoberfest in Indy or in Bloomington this month.

UpCup Winner, Malcolm and Margaret – Scottish Ale 70 Shilling, very sessionable at 3.5% ABV and 14 IBUs. Malcolm and Margaret will be available the second week of September. Congratulations to our UpCup winner, Andrew Korty, from Indianapolis!

Double Dragonfly – We took our award-winning Dragonfly IPA and cranked up the malt and hops, but managed to hold onto the the perfect balance our Dragonfly is known for. The result is a brew with a very powerful hop profile, matching malt character, and an enticing floral nose.

Teddy Bear Kisses – A dark and robust beer brewed in the traditional stout method. Teddy Bear Kisses features an abundance of dark malts and high alpha hops for a powerful impact of roast, chocolate, and sweet bitterness. The lucky few who cuddle up to a warming session with Teddy Bear Kisses sense the velvety malt character, balanced bitter intensity, and soothing chocolate notes created by long aging on fair trade cocoa nibs. Teddy Bear Kisses will make you feel warm and happy inside, but it’s definitely not your childhood cuddle toy.

PS – Teddy Bear Kisses won a Gold Medal in the 2010 World Beer Championships.

Both Double Dragonfly and Teddy Bear Kisses will be available the last week of September.

Fresh Hopped Harvest Ale – Our brand new fresh hopped Harvest Ale is being set to release the first of October. I mean, we like hops. Bunches. So much, we’ve been growing them at our brewery grounds for half a decade now. Unfortunately, we never harvested enough to brew a full batch of fresh hopped beer with, so we went to the hop growers in the Pacific Northwest to help us out.

Upland’s Harvest Ale is an American Pale Ale by design, but an even more vibrant rendition by loading up our hopback with freshly harvested Citra hops. Expect huge wafts of tropical fruit notes, balanced by a moderate bitterness and light toasted malt character. A showcase for one of our four favorite ingredients and a delight for all the hopheads out there.

It’s Now A Lottery For Upland Sours

Upland Brewing Co has switched to a lottery when it comes to getting a hold of their sours.  The first come, first serve method just sucked.

Due to limited quantity and the speed with which reservations for our sour ales have been filling up, we are using a lottery system for the second blend of our Sour Reserve rather than the first-come-first-served reservation system we have used in the past, so we can see how this all works out.

From June 7th to June 14th, visit www.sourreserve2.eventbrite.com.  You can enter the lottery to buy one bottle of Sour Reserve.  Check where you want to get your bottle (Bloomington Brew Pub or Indy Tasting Room)

Winners selected June 15th.  Buy your bottle from 6/20 – 7/3 for $25 dollars.

About Sour Reserve:

Our Sour Reserve is inspired by the breweries of Belgium, which for hundreds of years have blended together different batches of unfruited lambic to make a style known as Gueuze. Inspired by this tradition, head brewery Caleb Staton has been blending together his favorite batches of our own lambic-style beer into a single barrel to create a unique combination of flavors and aromas that can never be replicated.

Reserve Your Upland Bourbon Sour Gilgamesh, 1/25

Upland GilgameshYou can start reserving Upland Brewing’s latest sour ditty starting at 12 pm (Eastern) on 1/25/12.  http://gilgamesh.eventbrite.com Each bottle will run you $25.  Pick up runs February 1st -22nd at the brewpub.   Note: A friend with a photocopy of your ID can pick up your bottles.  Gilgamesh is a bourbon barrel aged blended sour ale.

Upland’s latest adventure into the world of sour brewing, Gilgamesh, is a beer fit for the legendary king of Uruk himself. This Flanders Red style beer is our strongest sour ale, at 10.5% ABV, and possesses a fruity Belgian yeast character, creamy mouthfeel contributed by flaked maize, tart highlights produced by wild microorganisms, and hints of oak texture from slightly neutral bourbon barrel aging.

Gilgamesh won the gold medal in its category and runner up for Best in Show at Chicago’s Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers in November 2011.

Gilgamesh is a Sumerian god that ruled for 126 years, starting in 2500 B.C.  Upland started the  sour program in 2006 with just 4 barrels. Today they make 11 sour ales.

Upland Sour Reserve, 4 Years In The Works

Upland Beer’s sour program dates back to 2006 with just 4 oak barrels.  Obviously the program has grown considerably.   On October 5th, 2011 at 12 noon, head brewer Caleb Staton’s years of hard work are about to be realized.  Sour fans will be able to reserve this limited release beer at uplandbeer.com.

In addition to the reservation, those close to brewery can get tickets to a sour reception:

Alongside reservations, we’ll open online ticket sales for a Sour Reserve Reception to be held the first weekend of the pickup period, on Saturday, October 22nd.
Attendees will have the chance to sample all ten styles of sour ale released by Upland, including the Sour Reserve, and meet our brew crew. Only 100 tickets are available, and they are $30 each. You do not have to reserve a bottle of Sour Reserve in order to buy a ticket (but why wouldn’t you?). The reception will take place at our Bloomington Brew Pub from 3-6pm, and will include an assortment of cheeses and fruits suggested for pairing.
Sour Reserve Is A Gueuze.

Gueuze is a lambic without fruit. Lambic? A Belgian style beer that is allowed exposure to open air fermentation, allowing the natural funky yeasts to do their thing.  A gueuze is a blend of a few different brews or vintages of lambics, then aged in oak.  Upland did the same thing.  Blended portion of their favorite sour batches.

The lambics are then aged in oak, and we blend portions of our favorite batches together in their own barrels to develop unique flavors and aromas that can never be replicated. The final step in this patient process is bottle conditioning, which creates a fresh, zesty carbonation.

Arrival: October, 2011
