Half Acre Remembers When It Was Easier Being A Kid

Do you remember when growing seemed a little simpler?  Kids could get in fights after school without going to jail, you could bring a plastic knife in your lunchbox without going to jail, you could skip school without going to jail.   Half Acre Brewing does.  On Friday the Chicago based brewery debuts  The Hammer, The Bullet, & The Vise.  The beer is a reminder of a simpler time when kids were free to be kids, before Facebook, cellphones, bike helmets and a claustrophobic false sense of security.

There was a time when children ran around loose and fearless, getting filthy and being perfectly reckless. Kids kicked the crap out of each other and instantly let it go, they built Read the rest

Half Acre’s Cipher Is A Beer & A Hidden Code

Half Acre Brewing will be releasing Cipher in the coming weeks.  The name is an homage to something you use everyday but might not think about – computer code.

Computers dominate even the most basic of tasks. Almost everyone uses a device that can do amazing things to connect us to information and people. These tasks are carried out by simple or complex computing devices that rely on code. Code consists of basic numbers or letters that are arranged to form very complex ideas. You use code everyday. Code is running in and around us all the time.Read the rest

In Memoriam: Half Acre Daly Double

Half Acre Brewing is in the process of brewing Daly Double, made in memoriam of a friend Terry Daly.  He died recently, and suddenly.

Terry was a fan of music, geometry, his two Huskies, Moon & Luna, and amply hopped craft beer.  We’re pretty sure that Terry was the foremost consumer of Daisy Cutter Pale Ale. Terry began popping in to buy sixtels of Daisy and before long he stopped by almost everyday just to chew the fat. After a while, he had the authority to walk back into the brewery and go into the cold room to reserve himself kegs and manage his own kegerator inventory for his home Daisy Cutter supply. Being a bright dude, we put Read the rest

Man Lives With Wild Turkeys, Inspires Half Acre Beer

Gabriel, the brewmaster at Half Acre Brewing, recently watched a show about a guy that was raised with a pack of wild turkeys (the animal, not the liquor.) The moral of the turkey story is that the animals lived and enjoyed every moment of everyday, the way we should – but often don’t.

Thanksgiving is upon us – although you wouldn’t really know it because Christmas stuff showed up in September, but it is. Family and friends are close, a time where you should savor the moments you have.  That’s where Avena Sativa comes in. An English oat bitter  brewed specifically for your “Thanksgiving Thunderdome.”… Read the rest

Half Acre Brings You A Ghostly Brew

The legend? Flashback to StickyFat that Half Acre Beer Company released earlier this month.  Legend has it that the StickyFat Bear feeds on the ooey-gooey goodness that comes from freshly picked hop cones.  One day Coney Bottoms, a hop farmer, met the StickyFat Bear face to face in the hop fields and it did not end well for Coney.  Now his ghost, dubbed Mr. Ouroboros, haunts the hop fields each cycle.

The beer?  Mr. Ouroboros is an Americo-German Pale Ale brewed in conjunction with Pierce Brewpub’s Jonathan Cutler.  As the follow up beer to StickyFat, it too is a wet hopped beer brewed with lots of fresh, whole citra hop cones… Read the rest

2 Sticky Wet Hops For Half Acre This Year

This year, Half Acre Brewing (Chicago, IL) is brewing 2 wet hop harvest beers.  The first one was announced this AM.  StickyFat, a black IPA, was released for the first time last year.  HA described 2010 Bear as “less than subtle.”

2011′s Sticky is apparently “more refined.”  Half Acre took a little different approach with this batch.  New hops from a different farmer were used.

Working with wet hops is a process without strict rules. The results speak to the year, the crop, the weather and the choices you made. StickyFat is here again, our tribute to the StickyFat Bear, the very tired, the very mellow bear that looks to get hold of the hops farmers nurtured all Read the rest
