Terrapin’s Boom ShakaLager Arrives!

The next installment of Terrapin’s Side Project Series – Boom Shakalager has hit shelves!

QUICK REVIEW:

Side Project #11 dubbed “Boom ShakaLager” is a Bavarian style imperial lager.  Brewed with Bavarian yeast of course — expect German hops and malts also.  Estimated release date — June, but there a lot more info to come before that happens.  It’s rare to see a lager from Terrapin, as the label explains –

“Boom ShakaLager is the next installment in Terrapin’s “Side Project” series of beers. This Imperial Lager is made exclusively with German malts, German hops and a true Bavarian lager yeast strain.  While 99% of the beers brewed at Terrapin are ales, we figured we should show some love to the lager style as well. Not that this off-beat, big beer is going to be brewed to a traditional style or anything.”

Availability — 22oz bombers & draft. 1 time release.

9% ABV

NEW RELEASE: Redhook Rope Swing Pils

Redhook Brewing from Portland, NH has added a new summer seasonal for your drinking pleasure.   It’s a pilsner, which should should meld well with warmer weather.  The name just sounds like summer doesn’t it?

One great thing to note right off the bat about Redhook’s Rope Swing pilsner is that there aren’t all too many CRAFT BREWED pilsners available about there.  Shiner just made a splash with Shiner 101.

As described by Redhook –

“Rope Swing Summer Pilsner is brewed in a traditional Czech style and is the first pilsner Redhook Ale Brewery has ever released.  Rope Swing Summer Pilsner offers a very soft palate and malt flavors that are offset by a medium dose of destinct Czech hops to bring out its authentic flavors.  The refreshing beer finishes with a clean, bright, thirst-quenching quality.”

Ingredients –

Hops – Saaz

Malts – Pale, Carapils, Caramel, Munich

5.3% ABV

25 IBU’s (Low Bitter)

Availability – April  – July Nationwide, draft and bottle.  2010 Inaugural brew year.

5/4 – Currently in stock at Hop City.

Notes – Redhook suggested food pairing – barbecued chicken, bratwurst, spicy food, fresh fish, and green salad.

Sweetwater’s Road Trip Returns

A couple of days late on this, but the most recent brew from Sweetwater’s “Catch & Release” series – Road Trip has returned!  Road Trip is classified as a German Pilsner.  At least German Pilsner in the beginning.  If you haven’t had Road Trip, its a crisp lager with a spicy hop finish.  It’s essentially a pilsner with extra hop additions.  Instead of a lager yeast, an ale yeast was used, and it was fermented at ale temperatures – putting this “Road Trip” all over the map.  (Forgot that part, thanks Mark!)  This part of the process makes a big difference in ending flavor.  It can be stylistically confusing, and the flavor is all over the place, but hey – what good road trip isn’t right?

Tasting – Look for hops with some spicy notes with a little bitter.   Crisp, fresh, with some sweet notes.  So many beers are born out of seasons.  Road Trip is no different.  A good choice for warm weather.

Availability – April – July.  12oz/6pks and Draft offerings.

5.3% ABV

Tapping Friday, 4/9 at Taco Mac Metropolis

Sierra Nevada Summerfest

Sierra Nevada Summerfest, the seasonal pilsner first released in 1991 by the Chico, California based brewery.

Around 2021, the brewery announced the retirement of this summer favorite, wanting to replace it with Summer Break, a hazy low ABV IPA. However, fans pushed back, and it would seem the beer wasn’t seasonally gone long.

Our Summerfest® is a refreshing, pilsner-style lager. Its incredible smoothness comes from an extra-long lagering period. Lighter in body than our ales but just as complex in character, Summerfest® quenches your thirst with big aroma and a tangy hop bite.

Sierra Nevada Summerfest is available in 12oz bottles, cans and draft, late-Spring each year.

Style: Pilsner
Hops: Perle, Saaz
Malts: Two Row Pale, Munich
Yeast: Lager

Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. Late Spring, Summer. Seasonally.

5% ABV, 28 IBUs
