You’ll be pretty excited to hear that North Coast Brewing’s 14th Anniversary release – Barrel Aged Old Rasputin, aka XIV starts shipping soon.
North Coast’s muti-medal winning and and highly acclaimed Russian imperial stout – Old Rasputin spends time in bourbon barrels. Released once a year in corked and caged bottles. 12th Anniversary saw limited distribution upon it’s release, retailing around $20 a bottle.
Per North Coast: Rasputin XIV is Here! For the past few years, barrel-aged Old Rasputin has been released in such limited quantities that it has been available only at the brewery retail shop. However, we have received so many requests for this beer that for the 12th anniversary, NCBC produced enough Old Rasputin XIV to put into broader distribution. There’s certainly not a flood of it, but it is available in select areas. Check the distributor in your area to find where to get it.
Style: Imperial Stout (barrel aged) Availability: 16.9 oz bottles. Corked/Caged Arrival: Now Available, as of 12/6/111
Fort Collins, CO. — On October 24, 2011, Odell Brewing will celebrate the return of Friek, its Framboise/Kriek inspired sour ale and the Gold Medal winner for Wood and Barrel Aged Sour Beers at this year’s Great American Beer Festival®.
“I think this beer best represents our collaborative culture,” said Brendan McGivney, head of production at Odell Brewing. “I cannot think of a beer that had as many hands involved in the process as this one from raspberry picking and cherry squishing to yeast and bug propagation, barrel handling, and 750 ml bottling.”
Friek, an adaptation of a Lambic style ale, is aged in oak barrels with cherries grown on Colorado’s western slope and blended with raspberries hand-picked in Fort Collins, CO. The beer blends a slight cherry tartness with a fresh raspberry finish for a delightfully crisp and bright flavor. Wild yeasts, lactobacillus, and pediococcus create a sour element that enhances the fruit and evolves over time.
Bottled in 750 ml cork and cage finished Champagne style bottles, Friek will be available in limited quantities throughout the brewery’s ten state distribution region.
Odell Brewing will celebrate the return of the beer and its recent medal with a “FRIEK OUT” bash in the brewery’s tap room on October 29th. Guests are encouraged to don their Friekiest and enjoy samples of the beer, local food, and live music.
Founded in 1989, Odell Brewing was started by Doug Odell, his wife Wynne, and his sister Corkie. Twenty-one years later, the culture of family and collaboration still thrives fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. In 2010 the brewery completed its fourth expansion, adding a wood-aging cellar, a 750 ml bottling line, and a 76 kilowatt photovoltaic system capable of providing 25% of the brewery’s peak energy demand. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is committed to serving the communities in which it distributes by sourcing local raw materials, and through its charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. Odell Brewing was recently named a “Top Company of 2010” by ColoradoBiz Magazine and is an award winning brewery, nationally and internationally: 2011 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for Friek. 2010 North American Beer Awards — gold medal for Woodcut No. 3. 2009 BrewNZ Awards — gold for 5 Barrel Pale Ale. 2008 World Beer Cup® — gold for IPA. 2007 Great American

Friek is aged in oak barrels with Colorado cherries, AND Fort Collins raspberries. Then there’s the wild yeasts – lactobacillus and pediococcus to funk things up even more.
Expect it in 750ml corked & caged bottles. In Odell’s 10 state distribution network. There’s a “FRIEK OUT” party at the tap room on 10/29. Be a friek, celebrate a gold medal, and get a mouthful of sour. [PressRelease]
We feel that it’s necessary to address a few of the concerns surrounding the release of our Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS). We understand the frustrations stemming from the lack of availability of this beer and are looking forward to the day when we can produce much more of our specialty brands. As some of you are aware, we have been undergoing constant expansion for the past few years and have been working toward a master plan that will increase our annual brewing capacity by four times our current level. We are happy as hell to share that our new brewhouse is now on line and that we just recently started brewing into the new system. We plan to use this new system in 2012 to increase production of our specialty items to better service the demand for them. It is important to keep in mind, however, that the next couple of 750ml (Backstage Series) releases as well as the 2012 KBS release will still be scarce, because these beers were brewed on the old (smaller) system. But after that we should be off and running toward much greater availability.
On another note, there seems to be some concern or confusion on how are beers are allocated per state. We are proud to be a Michigan-based brewery and all specialty releases take this into consideration. We at Founders will never forget our home state market. In terms of CBS, the state of Michigan received an allocation of 21% of the entire batch of CBS. No other state saw more than 12% of the total availability. That being said, no state is treated more fairly than another (including MI). Distributor allocations are simply based on a representation of total number of accounts they represent for Founders. Should rumors of this exist to the contrary, know that they are just that: rumors.
Lastly, we’ve noticed that retail price gouging is also being discussed. I can only give you the brewery’s position on this, but please know that, legally, once we sell our products to our wholesaler, they in turn sell it to retailers throughout our states of distribution. We have no control over what this retailer will charge for the beer. We do establish our suggested retail pricing, but we cannot enforce this whatsoever. When we hear of retail price gouging, it annoys us as much as it annoys you. Our recommendation to our wholesalers in dealing with retailers that are gouging is to communicate that, if the retailer does not stop overcharging, they will jeopardize their ability to receive Founders specialty items in the future.
In short, we just want to set the record straight on these few items floating around on the blogs and make everyone aware that we are working day and night to fix the capacity concerns with our specialty products. We make this beer because we are extremely passionate about creating the best liquid we know how to produce. We started this business as home brewers and still look at ourselves as such. We know that some of you might never get your chance at a CBS bottle, but we feel it would be a greater disappointment to have never shared this product at all.
