Mikkeller Santas Little Helper 2010

To my knowledge this beer has absolutely nothing to do with The Simpsons.  Nothing is stopping you from trying to convince someone it is though.  Danish brewers Mikkeller have released this popular Christmas/winter seasonal again for 2010.  It was first released in 2006, and the recipe varies a little bit each release.  In the past, cocoa powder and other specialty spices were used.  Looks like 2010 does not have cocoa.  Love Belgian Ales? Keep reading.

Commercial Description:
(FROM 2009) Santas Little Helper is Mikkellers Christmas beer. Each year Santas little Helper returns, but although Christmas is tradition and repetitions, then Santas Little Helper is not the same for two consecutive years. Mikkel believe that you can always optimize a recipe, and it is exactly what he was doing with this Belgian-inspired beers. Since 2006 the recipe for Santas Little Helper has been adjusted and improved. In this 2009 version is nothing short of sublime.”

Mikkeller Ris a la M’ale

Ris a la mande is a Christmas dish composed of rice pudding, whipped cream, vanilla, chopped almonds and topped with cherry sauce.  The dessert is served cold.  This new beer is based on this Danish dessert from Mikkeller – Ris a la M’ale.  This new offering in the United States keeps this Christmas treat in mind, to be drank with the dish or alone.

Commercial Description:
Rice a la M’ale’ is to be enjoyed as a dessert, similarly to the one of the same name that inspired it, Risalamande. In this new beer, the one-man brewer has, among other things, experimented with cherries and almonds. “I’d make a new Christmas beer and think it’s fun to experiment with new ingredients and spices so it was natural to try to make a dessert that can be drunk to risalamande,” explains the brewer. In the new ‘Rice a la M’ale’ the man behind Mikkeller used all the ingredients of the Danish Christmas dessert: rice, vanilla, sugar, salt, cream / milk and then cherries and almond extract.

The result is a slightly tart ale, which must provide the counterpoint to the sweet risalamande-dessert.”

Style: Fruit/Vegetable Beer

Taste Expectations: Cherries & Almonds.  Mouthfeel almost like a saison. Spices

Availability: 12.7 oz Corked/caged. Paper wrapped.

8% ABV

Mikkeller/Brewdog “I Hardcore You”

Imperial IPA fans, this is a beer from you.  “I Hardcore You” is  a collaboration between Danish nomadic brewers Mikkeller, and Scottish inovative brewer – Brewdog from Glasgow, Scotland.   Now I used the term collaboration, but it’s not a collaboration beer in the traditional sense.   It’s a new recipe for sure – but with a twist.  It’s a blend of two beers already brewed by each of the brewers.

This beer is blend of Mikkeller’s “I Beat yoU” and Brewdog’s Hardcore IPA.  Both were blended together (at Brewdog in Scotland) and then dry hopped twice post blend.  Interestingly enough, it might be the first of it’s kind.  It’s hard to find a beer that is an actually blend of beers from the respective brewers, not a collaboration producing something completely new.

Style: Imperial IPA

Taste Expectations: Aromas of pineapple & citrus.  Flavor follows w/ a nice grapefruit flavor balanced by a nice caramel backbone.

Availability: 12 oz bottle. S0ld individually. Around $6 dollars.  Rare draft.

9.5% ABV

Mikkeller’s Black Tie!

I’m a big fan of barrel aged beers.  If you are too, don’t pass this one up.  It’s brewed by the gypsy brewers Mikkeller, based in Denmark.  I use the term “gypsy” because Mikkeller doesn’t have a brewery of their own.  Their beers are so good and have won so many awards they basically just choose a brewery and brew there.   This particular beer was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway.  Black Tie (once known as Mandeøl or Man Beer) was brewed for the Swedish market and only as draught beer. After spending four months in Scottish whiskey barrels and then being bottled it earned it’s present name, Black Tie.  Black Tie is an imperial stout with honey and smoked barley. Sweet, smokey and sophisticated – slick and sexy like a black tie.

Commerical Description:
Mikkeller Black Tie is an elegant and generous imperial stout. This beer has benefited from aging in barrels. Created with the finest craftmanship for the pleasure of the connoisseur.

Style: Imperial Stout.  Barrel aged. Honey added

Taste Expectations: Dark roasted malts.  Slightly smokey.  Coffee notes. Oak & subtle vanilla.  Very complex. Lots of flavors. Might not be a beginners barrel aged stout.

Availability: 500ML Bottles.  Capped.  Low quantity.

11.5% ABV
