Avery Hopes to Build In North Boulder

Rumors have been flying for months about Avery Brewing’s relocation, but now it’s settled.  Avery has decided on a 5.6 acre spot in North Boulder, CO.  The new facility will include a 30,000 square foot brewery, restaurant, and gift shop.  The building will be red brick and is designed to look like an older brewery.  Avery is still in negotiations for the plot of land which is just down the street from Asher Brewing Company

It is also down the street from Boulder County Day School who is less than thrilled about the new brewery location.  They oppose the idea and it will be discussed at a public hearing on December 15th.

5 Breweries, Lots of Ingredients. A Superstar Collaboration

Long time friends and brewers Allagash Brewing , Avery Brewing , Dogfish Head, The Lost Abbey, and Sierra Nevada Brewing got together to brew a special collaboration beer and each selected a native terrior to contribute to the brew.

Repoterrior by definition is Noun 1.) A stock of ingredients, techniques, or pieces that a company or group of performers combines and is prepared to perform.  2.) The repossession or reclamation of the ideal of terrior from the wine world (where it means dirt) to the craft brewing world (where it means the creative thumbprint of the artisanal brewer).

So what did each brewery contribute to this 5.5% ABV session-lager?

  • Sierra Nevada — Wild Rice, Beets, Cucumber, Mint, Carrots
  • Avery — Colorado Alfalfa Honey
  • Allagash — Maine Purple Potatoes
  • Dogfish Head — Free-range Atlantic Ocean Beach Wood
  • Lost Abbey — Cage Free Pacific Ocean Beach Wood

Like many other great collaborations, the idea for this beer was born from conversation in a back room of a Boulder, CO restaurant.  Brewed at Sierra Nevada in Chico, CA this sessionable lager beer reclaims the earthbound mantle of terroir from the grape-soaked, buttoned-down world of wine and repurposes it in a new sudsy sense.  Featuring natural ingredients contributed by each of the five breweries, this unique and earthy beer is complex and layered but ultimately drinkable. Using the full repertoire of skills from more than 86 combined years of brewing knowledge and skill, this lager combines traditional (and not so traditional) ingredients into an ideal summertime brew.

This will be an extremely limited draft only offering available at the collaborating breweries.

A distinct 5.5% ABV session-lager brewed with elemental, native terroir from the following collective of brewers: Sierra Nevada (wild rice, beets, cucumber, mint and carrots), Avery (Colorado alfalfa honey), Allagash (Maine purple potatoes), Dogfish Head (free-range Atlantic Ocean “beach” wood), and Lost Abbey (cage-free Pacific Ocean “beach” wood).

Born out of a backroom conversation in a Boulder restaurant and blooming into a full-blown cornucopia of a collaboration, Repoterroir is a coming together of like-minded craft beer compatriots. Brewed at Sierra Nevada’s brewery in Chico, CA this sessionable lager beer reclaims the earthbound mantle of terroir from the grape-soaked, buttoned-down world of wine and re-purposes it in a new sudsy sense.

Meretrix will make her debut at a bottle release party at the Avery Tap Room and Barrel-Aging Cellars at 5PM on Saturday, July 16th.    We’ve instituted a number of new policies to ensure that all in attendance have a remarkably fun and positively memorable experience!  Here goes:

  • Numerous Tap Room servers will be on hand to serve guests–in the line–as they wait.  We’ll also have our 10-tap kegerator full of small-batch and barrel-aged oddities from the tap room like Eremita (our Tap Room only sour blend), Dry-Hopped IPA, Mai Rye Bock etc.
  • A DJ will be spinning an eclectic mix of tunes for the crowds.
  • Once a substantial line has formed, our staff will be giving tickets–each good for the purchase of 1 bottle of Meretrix–to those in line.  The number of tickets we hand out will be EXACTLY the number of bottles that we have to sell.  This way, if you show up late you will know immediately whether you are in time to get bottles.
  • Limit of 4 bottles per customer.
  • First come, first served.
  • CASH ONLY! CASH ONLY! We will have an ATM on site in case anyone forgets this advice.  Note that the cash only rule will make the whole process MUCH faster for all involved!
  • 55 cases for sale = 1320 bottles = 4 bottles per customer = 330 customers who get Meretrix (assuming all purchase the 4 bottle limit).   Please plan accordingly.

The beers in our Barrel-Aged Series are a celebration of the passion and effort that our brewers put into Avery beers, and we want the release of these beers to be equally fun!  Please show up ready to taste, socialize and share great beers with great friends!  We hope to continue the party well into the night!

Avery Brewing’s 5 Yeast Rye Dry Hopped Celebration

Avery Brewing
turns 18 years old this year.  That means it’s time again for the brewery’s anniversary beer.  Looks like the saison is back for 2011.  Last year’s style was a schwarzbier, while 16th was also a saison.  This years dry-hopped Eighteen boasts 5 yeasts!

Label:
For this year’s celebratory brew, we decided to focus on the characteristics that certain yeasts bring to the party.  Each of the five Belgian yeasts selected adds it’s own unique aspect to the flavor and aroma of this saison.  The hefty addition of rye helps dry this beauty out and lends another spicy component to the flavor.  And for the added fun, we subtly dry-hopped it too!  Take your time and smell and taste the complexities that EIGHTEEN has to offer.  Many thanks to all for your support throughout the years.  EIGHTEEN already??

Style: Saison
Availability: 22oz bombers, draft.  Bottled in May, 2011
Arrival: TBA
