Harpoon’s Newest 100 Barrel Series Released – Black IPA

Harpoon 100 Barrel Black IPAHarpoon Brewery’s 40th release in the 100 Barrel Series is a Black IPA brewed by Harpoon’s own Matt DeLuca.  It was brewed with a new specialty malt called Midnight Wheat and flaked barley creating an almost stout-like appearance.  I wanted this Black IPA to be a very hop-forward beer; having a huge, hoppy nose was important to me said Matt.  He used Chinook, Simcoe, Cascade, Citra, and Ahtanum hops in the 7% ABV brew.

Style: Black IPA
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft

7% ABV, 67 IBUs

Bridgeport Dark Rain

BridgePort Brewing Company will release its newest winter seasonal ale, Dark Rain, on 1/1/12.

“Dark Rain is that link between darker, maltier beers and the highly-hopped pale ales that our fans might be more accustomed to,” explains Bridgeport’s brewmaster, Jeff Edgerton. “While using the bold flavors that come from very dark roasted malts is not new to Bridgeport, this is the first time that we have layered these flavors with five distinct hop varieties — all from the state of Oregon.” From a recently press release.

Style: Black IPA
Hops: Nugget, Chinook, Crystal, Centennial, Cascade
Malts: Dark Crystal, Dark Wheat

Taste Expectations: (Per Bridgeport) Black Wheat and Dark Crystal Malt add dense color and mild smooth flavors to this intensely hopped Black Ale. This ale has a very drinkable, mid-level alcohol and bitterness that starts with roasted and hoppy aromatic notes and finishes with the dry hop character of the Nugget hop varietal. A Chinook, Crystal, Centennial and Cascade blend is used in our hopjack to provide full flavored background hoppiness.

Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft.

5.6% ABV, 60 IBUs

Yeastie Boys Hit U.S.

Yeastie Boys Pot Kettle BlackNew beer from New Zealand hitting American shelves – Yeastie Boys Pot Kettle Black, and Digital IPA.   Let’s get acquainted with the Yeasties.
It’s 2 guys – Stu McKinlay, and Sam “The Grandmaster” Possenniskie.  Not only are they taking NZ by storm, but now the United States.  First up – Pot Kettle Black.  Somewhere between a hoppy porter and a black IPA.

Pot Kettle Black is our multi-award winning ‘Black IPA’ (that some call a ‘Hoppy Porter’). The different names convey the fact that this beer is a contradiction of styles: fresh and hoppy, yet dark and rich. Most importantly it is mindbendingly delicious and a complete original. Like all Yeastie Boys beer is is painstakingly crafted by people who love beer., then conditioned to optimum ripeness, before making its way into a bottle and then to your hands. Now take the next step and enjoy with thoughtful consideration.

Style: Porter
Hops: Nelson Sauvin, Stryian Golding NZ Cascade
Malts: NZ Pale, Melanoiden, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent
Yeast: American “Chico” Ale

Taste Expectations:  A big chocolate, roasty malt character – mixes with citrusy hops
Availability: 11.2oz bottles. Year -round

 6% ABV

Second offering is Digital IPA.  Brewed for USA export.  Released this summer in NZ.

Stone/Ninkasi/Alchemist More Brown Than Black For Vermont

Stone, Ninkasi, and The Alchemist have collaborated on a new brew benefitting the Vermont victims of Irene.  The floodwaters of Irene completely destroyed the The Alchemist in Waterbury, Vermont.

IPA, in American Craft Brew lexicon, has come to mean so much more than a hoppy British style ale designed for export.  Brewing an IPA is an opportunity for today’s craft brewers to showcase the magnificence and versatility of the hop, and to explore the wonderful aromas and flavors that the myriad of hop varieties can provide to ales.  It is without a doubt, the most exciting ale style for me to brew.

I am thrilled to brew this brown (not quite black) IPA with John Kimmich and Jamie Floyd.  John is a New England brewing legend, and one of the very first brewers of the Black IPA (a style have come to love here at Stone) at the Vermont Pub and Brewery, and now at the Alchemist.  And Jamie’s Oregon roots are no less impressive; his hop forward offerings at Ninkasi have been favorite of ours for a long time.  The fact that the proceeds of this collaboration are going to help Vermont victims of Hurricane Irene (like John himself) is icing on the cake.

For this ale, we used only newer hop varieties.  They were hard to get but totally worth the effort: Nelson Sauvin and Delta for flavor, and a dry-hop with Galaxy and Citra. Have fun tasting and enjoying these wonderful, fruity, herbal and spicy hop flavors!

Style: Black IPA
Hops: Citra, Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, Delta

Availability: 12oz bottles
Arrival: TBA

7.4% ABV

PR: Firestone Walker Expanding Proprietor’s In 2012

Firestone Walker Expands Proprietor’s Reserve Series

Two New Beers Will Be Released This Year

Paso Robles, Calif – Firestone Walker Brewing Co., after being named Great American Beer Festival Mid-Sized Brewery of the Year for an unprecedented third time, will be adding more beers to their Proprietor’s Reserve Series. Double DBA and Wookey Jack will join the existing line-up of beers, which sees distribution all over the US.

Wookey Jack, an 8.3 percent alcohol by volume, unfiltered black rye IPA, will be a year-round beer that will be released in mid-March. Wookey Jack will put a serious twist on the IPA theme weaving in jet-black dark malts, assertive citrusy hops and a spicy addition of rye malt.  Consumers will see this beer in 22oz bottles and on draft wherever Firestone is currently sold.

Double DBA, has been a part of the anniversary blend over the past three years and was originally brewed for that sole purpose. Now the Imperial Special Bitter will be released annually to the delight of beer fans that have been calling for it to leave the brewery. The 12 percent brew is aged in a variety of barrels including retired Firestone Union barrels and 20-year-old Bourbon barrels.  This beer pays proud homage to our flagship DBA. It will be available in 22oz bottles and limited draft in select accounts beginning July 2012.

“The Proprietor’s Reserve series allows us the opportunity as brewers to exercise our creativity and really push the limits of our brew kit and our raw materials.” said Firestone Walker Brewmaster, Matt Brynildson. “Wookey Jack is our take on newly established “Black IPA” style while also being our very first rye beer.  DDBA is a familiar friend that we have been perfecting in our barrel-aging program over the past 3 years.  We believe that both are ready to leave the nest in 2012.”

Currently the Proprietor’s Reserve Series consists of three oak aged beers and two year-round stainless steel releases.  The year round releases are Double Jack Imperial IPA and Walker’s Reserve Porter. Double Jack recently won the gold medal at the 2011 European Beer Star Awards and the silver medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival.  Walker’s Reserve was named Champion Porter at the Australian Beer awards and was the only porter to be awarded a gold medal.

On February 1st the beer formerly known as Abacus will return under the new name ‘§ucaba.’ This Bourbon Barrel-aged Barley Wine will be the same great beer just with a new, more elusive name.

Parabola, a Bourbon Barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout, will also return, it will be released in mid-April. ’16’, Firestone’s anniversary blend, will return next November to celebrate yet another year of brewing.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company was founded in 1996 and is located in Paso Robles, Ca.  The brewery prides itself in producing the world’s finest pale ales to a regional market.  Firestone is the only brewery to be awarded Best Mid-sized Brewery honors three times at the 2003, 2007 and 2011 Great American Beer Festivals as well as World Beer Cup Champion for a Mid-sized Brewery at the 2004, 2006 and 2010 World Beer Cup competitions.
