Bell’s Eccentric Cafe Servers All Cicerone

Bell’s ups the beer knowledge of it’s beer servers.

KALAMAZOO —Bell’s Brewery Inc. is proud to announce that all servers at its Eccentric Café are now Certified Beer Servers as recognized by the Cicerone Certification Program.

All 13 recently completed the process which is the first step in becoming a Certified Cicerone, the beer equivalent of the wine sommelier.

It’s an effort to arm our staff with the knowledge to serve good beer, said Jason Reicherts, Retail & Pub Manager for the Eccentric Café.

“We want to do everything in our power to help our customers and give them the service they deserve. It’s an investment in service,” he said.

To become a Certified Beer Server one must possess a competent knowledge of beer storage and service issues as well as a modest knowledge of current popular beer styles, culture and a basic familiarity with beer tasting and flavors. Servers also need to be familiar with the brewing process and ingredients, according to Cicerone.org.

The program’s founder and director, Ray Daniels, is a veteran of the U.S. beer industry and president of the Craft Beer Institute. Daniels has experience in nearly every aspect of brewing and beer service.

On April 21, the Cicerone program recognized its 5,000 Certified Beer Server.

Bell’s is a proud supporter of the Cicerone Certification Program.

Every Bell’s employee also goes through extensive training on the history of Bell’s and its beers.

For more information about the Cicerone program, visit www.cicerone.org.

The Eccentric Café is located at 355 E. Kalamazoo Ave. in Kalamazoo, MI and is open from 11 a.m. to midnight Mondays-Wednesdays; 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and noon to midnight Sundays.

[INFOGRAPHIC] Asheville A Brewing Industry Hotspot

The Wall Street Journal recently published an article outlining industry, tech, and start up hotspots in the United States.  There is no surprise that brewing made this list.  Specifically Asheville, North Carolina.

The Asheville brewing scene ranks among cities like Albany, NY, San Antonio, TX, and Kansas City, MO with emerging IT and technology buisnesses.

“Asheville, a Blue Ridge Mountain town of 75,000, has 10 breweries, with two on the way. That can’t compare with the 40 in Portland, Ore., but it stacks up to other beer havens like Milwaukee and Boulder, Colo., which both have fewer than a dozen. “Asheville is definitely on the map and well recognized in the craft-brewing industry,” says Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association in Boulder.”

Asheville is home to 10 breweries currently, including: Green Man, French Broad, Asheville Brewing Company, and Highland.  There are at least two more breweries “in planning” to operate in Asheville.  [WallStreetJournal]

The U.S. beer scene is blowing up these days.  While we might not  have the 100’s of years of brewing culture under belts like Europe does, we do have things to get excited about.

The Genesee Sign resides in Auburn, New York has been turned off since the 1970’s due to energy costs.  It’s a lot like the Citgo sign next to Fenway Park in Boston.  Recently, the sign was converted to power saving LEDs.  Crowds of people in Auburn bought Genesse beers and counted down like it’s New Beers Eve (like what I did there?)  to the sign lighting.  Its an interested human interest piece about people tied to their brand. We all know beer has more uses than just drinking. Shampoo.  Body soap.   How about a WIFI signal booster. By cutting open a beer can (like they did in the movie Twister)  and using it as a signal collector, you could potentially raise your signal from 2 to 4 bars.  Beer is great isn’t it?  [WikiHow]

Wash Your Hair In Beer

BRÖÖ – the shampoo and conditioner made with beer.  Highland Brewing’s St. Terese’s Pale to be exact.

Sarah and Brad Pearsall, 2 lawyers created the product.  Apparently his mother used to wash her hair with beer, so the idea to pursue this was born.  The shampoo is simply beer, sulfate-free cleaners, & conditioners.  The shampoo launches this week in Ashville, North Carolina for $14 a bottle. The company isn’t shipping yet, but has plans to do so.  [Broo]
