Sour. Collaborative. Here.

Cigar City Brewing & The Bruery recently collaborated.  The result –  Marrón Acidifié.  Here sooner than expected. (A good thing.)

What You Need To Know:
In 2008, both Cigar City Brewing and The Bruery opened their doors.  In 2009, Joe Redner of Cigar City and Patrick Rue of The Bruery met at GABF.  They becames friends, had beers at Falling Rock Tap House, slapped a few high fives, and decided to collaborate.  Once you get those 2 brewers in a room together, don’t expect anything usual.  Ingredients like Thai basil, guava, specialty barrels came into play.

2 beers were produced, the first (ISO:FT) is rare and getting expensive to get ($200).  For those without deep pockets is the premiere release from the collaboration, Marrón Acidifié.

An Imperial Oud Bruin developed from a mutual love of classic Belgian technique blended with modern American ingenuity. Spending over a year in barrels, both bourbon and wine, has left this dark sour ale layered with notes of cranberries, tropical fruits, leather and aged balsamic vinegar, balanced by wood tannins and roasted malt.

Style: Flanders Oud Bruin

Taste Expectations: Dark fruits, cherries.  Roasty, & light malts.  Oak, tart, sweet, funky, complex.

Availability: 750 ML champagne bottles. Limited release.

8.5% ABV

Mischief Gone Wild

Another beer joining The Bruery’s Reserve Society offerings is a spin on Mischief.  They have taken the Belgian golden ale and added in brett.

From The Bruery Reserve email:

Mischief Gone Wild — Most of you have already had our hoppy Belgian-style golden ale, Mischief, and are already familiar with it’s unique character. Well, as you know, we at The Bruery get a bit bored of doing the same beers day in and day out, so we decided to introduce brettanomyces to the already mischievious equation and now, as they say, the beer has gone wild. Dryer, differently complex and really quite delicious, Mischief Gone Wild is unrestrained in just the right way.

Availability: 750ml bottles. Reserve Society members only. 4 bottle limit.

Release: April 1, 2011

The Bruery Cuir

The Bruery (Placienta, CA) currently celebrates their 3rd year of brewing. Much like a wedding anniversary, The Bruery has been releasing anniversary beers named for the traditional gift for the year. Year 1: Papier. Year 2: Coton. Year 3: Cuir. (French for Leather.) Description to Reserve Society Members:

Cuir is our third anniversary ale. It is the same recipe as Papier and Coton, created using the Solera method. Layered with complex flavors of dark fruit, vanilla, oak, and burnt sugar, we blended a portion of both Papier and Coton that had been aging in oak barrels with this new batch of the same beer, adding an additional layer of complexity that will grow over time as we continue to age and blend with each anniversary, creating an older average age to the ale.

Arrival: May, 2011.  Limited 3. $20/750ml bottle.

In addition, there is also a 100% Barrel aged Cuir offering coming in May also specifically for Reserve Society Members:

This is our special version of Cuir, just for the Reserve Society. While the general release is 25% barrel aged and 75% fermented with oak, this beer is 100% out of the oak barrel leaving it stronger in flavor, alcohol and complexity.

Arrival: May, 2011.  4 Bottle limit. $30/750ml bottle

Full Release

For our first collaboration beer we are lucky to partner with Cigar City Brewing out of Tampa, Florida. Geographically a country apart but following similar paths, we felt an immediate connection with Joey, Wayne and the crew. We’re both young breweries, founded and staffed by homebrewers, who use interesting ingredients and techniques to make unique, full-flavored beers. A recipe was created over pints at Falling Rock Tap House during GABF 2009 and Wayne came out to help brew it shortly after. Over a year in barrels has left this dark sour layered with notes of cranberries, tropical fruits, leather and aged balsamic vinegar, balanced by wood tannins and roasted malt. Raise a glass and toast to the success of fledlging breweries across this great nation!

The Release of Marion Acidifie will be as follows:

March 25th, 7pm
Rosamunde Sausage Grill, 2832 Mission Street, San Francisco

Bruery’s Salt Of The Earth Bottled

Salt Of The Earth, the next beer in The Bruery’s Provisions Series was bottled this week.  It is currently bottle conditioning.  Salt Of The Earth is a gose with coriander and truffle salt.

A gose is an old German style from Leipzig.   It’s an unfiltered wheat beer with 50%-60% malt.  Stylistically a gose is spicy & dry, with a nice complexity.  Salt, like truffle salt in Salt Of The Earth gives the gose a sharp flavor.

Salt Of The Earth will be available in The Bruery Provisions store in the coming weeks.

5% ABV
