NEW RELEASE: Great Divide Double Wit

Great Divide Brewing (Denver, CO) announced Double Wit last year, along side Oak Chocolate Yeti.  Double Wit  had very little shelf presence in it’s initial release in the southeast, but in 2010 things are different.  Double Wit is here, and in higher quantity.

Double Wit Belgian Style Ale is a witbier. Witbiers are pale, cloudy beers that are unfiltered with high levels of wheat in the brew.  Witbiers are spicy – with notes of orange/orange peel, coriander, even banana.  Great Divide Describes Double Wit

Double Wit is Great Divide’s more muscular take on the beloved white ales of Belgium. Unmalted wheat and Belgian malted barley give the beer a light body and straw hue, while coriander and curaçao provide the traditional notes of spice and light acidity. The brewers emphasize that this cloudy, deceptively drinkable creation should be enjoyed without the addition of fruit.”

Taste Expectations – Spicy with a strong flavor of wheat.  Spices include banana and clove.  Belgian yeast is notable and sells the flavor.  Easy drinking for higher ABV.

Suggested Food Pairings – Steamed mussels, cioppino (seafood stew), Brillat-Savarin triple crème cow’s milk cheese, lemon tart.

Availability – June – August 1. 22 oz Bombers, & Draft.  2ND Seasonal release.

8.1% ABV

Great Divide celebrates 16 years of craft brewing with this release, and on top of that – just finished huge brewery expansion.  On a $600,000 budget Great Divide expanded its output by50% to 24,000 barrels a year.  New beers will surface soon thanks to this expansion.

Taste Expectations – Notes of vanilla/oak.  Caramel malts add a sweet flavor to it.  Floral and citrus hops from English & American hops.  Well balanced DIPA.

Great Divide Oak Chocolate Yeti Returns!

Chocolate Yeti! Chocolate Yeti! Chocolate Yeti!  With much excitement, Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti has returned!  It’s been too long since this Yeti has visited.

Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti is an imperial stout.  Great Divide scaled back the hops in order to allow the cocoa nibs to take a lead roll.  This stout is aged in America oak, which adds vanilla notes to the brew.  Cocoa and vanilla sound good?  Thought so.  As a finishing touch, the brewers at Great Divide added a bit of cayenne just to keep your tastebuds on their toes.  You’ll find this imperial stout to resemble a chocolate bar, with a touch of complexity.  (The spice is subtle, but over all fun to find.)

Availability -April – May in 22oz bomber bottles – estimated retail $10.  Also draft offerings, but a bit hard to come by.

9.5% ABV

Cellarability – Chocolate Yeti drinks very well now, and is fantastic with a years age.

Food Pairings – As recommended by the brewer – Raw oysters, grilled NY strip, chicken mole, Roaring 40’s blue cheese,crème bruleé, chocolate raspberry mousse cake.

Great Divide’s Espresso Oak Aged Yeti

This is a beer that makes my mouth water every time I read the label.  It’s Great Divide’s Espresso Oak Aged Yeti.  This Yeti is a stout aged on oak chips with espresso coffee.   It first debuted last year in 22 oz bombers and was an instant hit.  Luckily for your palette, the Yeti has returned.

In this bottle you’ll taste subtle vanilla oak, and  some bittersweet chocolate.  Espresso Yeti is roasty, creamy, and smooth.  If you are a fan of coffee and chocolate in your stouts, don’t pass this one up.

Espresso Oak Aged Yeti isn’t the only Yeti in Great Divide’s lineup.  Yeti appears as simply the Imperial Stout, Oak Aged Yeti and Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti (which is also extremely delicious.)   These limited offerings can be spotted in 22 oz bottles seasonally also.

Espresso Oak Aged Yeti is available February — March in 22 oz bottles — retailing around $9.99. Rare draft offerings also, sightings to follow.

Great Divide Colette Returns

You may or may not have seen this seasonal offering from Great Divide over the weekend.  Colette is a saison from Great Divide, back for its second year.

Colette is a brewed as an homage to Belgian farmhouse workers.  It is just that scenario that farmhouse ales evolved.  Read my previous post about the history of this ale HERE. This saison is brewed with barley, wheat, and rice at high temperatures, with a 4 yeast strain combination.

Tasting notes — In Colette you will note some spicy wheat tones, with orange and coriander.  There are lots of fruity tones in this farmhouse ale, no doubt from the yeast strains used in the brewing.  Slightly sweet, with a little bit of banana flavors.  Very light and drinkable, great for the coming warm months.

Hopefully you now have some familiarity with this seasonal release.  Last year Colette debuted in 22oz bottles and limited draft releases under the name Saison.  This year Collette is found in 12oz 6pks and expanded draft offerings.   Not entirely sure why GD chose the name Colette.  However, looking into the origin of the name Colette — it means “People of Victory.”  As this is a tribute to Belgian farmers, could be appropriate?  Great Divide brews this for 2 months a year, so give it a try while its around.

New Year Round Offerings from Great Divide

Great Divide is adding 2 more seasonal beers into its year round lineup — Hoss Rye Lager and Claymore Scotch Ale.  Both beers were released in 2009 and made debuts at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Colorado.  Hoss and Claymore were so well received, Great Divide decided to go full time with these offerings.

Hoss Rye Lager – is a Marzen/Octoberfest Lager.   It is a Marzen full of flavor, with caramel malts and a touch of sweetness.  The rye added to this marzen gives Hoss some spice.  Mild noble hop notes makes this marzen balanced and drinkable.  6.2% ABV

Claymore Scotch Ale –  as the name dictates is a Scotch Ale.  Claymore draws its name from a medieval sword.  This malt forward beer is a tribute to the Scottish Wee Heavy style.  At 7.7%, the alcohol gives the drinker a warming sensation.  A quite tasty Scotch Ale.

Both are now available year round in bottle and draft offerings.

Brickstore’s 1st IPA Fest – CHEAT SHEET!

No catchy picture for this one. Its a long post.

Brickstore Pub on Saturday October 10th is hosting its first “Hop Harvest” Fest. All 25 taps will be featuring IPAs. Here is a little back-story on the India Pale Ale, in case you never fully knew the style. If you were going to draw up a family tree, the Pale Ale would be the father of the IPA. Pale ales were denoted by the use of pale malt, circa 17th century. The pale ale style has changed over time, and by the mid 18th century coke fire malt was used to produce a beer that was actually paler than its predecessors.

Now, I tell you about pale ales to lead to this. George Hodgson Bow Brewery is attributed to the world’s first IPA. This IPA was a pale ale as described above, that was well hopped, termed October Beer. (See posts about origins of names and style.) This October beer was meant to be cellared for a year or longer. The East India Trading Company (think high school history class,) exported Hodgson’s beer to India — which survived very well on the long trip, thanks to the hoppy nature of the beer acting as a preservative. Ultimately after business deals going bad with Hodgson, other breweries began producing this hoppy style of pale ale, and the demand for an “India Pale Ale” was born.

There’s your history lesson. Knowing the style helps you appreciate your beer. So here is a cheat sheet of the line up of the 25 IPA’s to be featured on Saturday —
