Kirin Launching Frozen Foam Beer [Video]

Kirin Brewing will add frozen draft beer to its Ichiban Shibori lineup for restaurants starting March.  The beer itself isn’t frozen, the head of it is.  Kirin has developed a special tap that will chill/freeze the head of the beer at 23 degrees Fahrenheit.   The frozen part acts a lid to keep the beer cold for up to 30 minutes, and can be eaten as a sorbet.  Ichiban Shibori frozen beer will be available in close to 1,000 restaurants in Asia by the end of the year.

The foam machine seen in the video below produces the head by a method called “Frozen Agitation.”  Air is blown into the beer to fluff up the head, and then flash chilled.  It’s dispensed much like soft serve ice cream.

Tokyo, Japan will see the first city to see the frozen beer, then around Japan after.  If Kirin sees success in the Asian launch, the U.S. could see the machines too.

“We want young consumers to enjoy drinking beer in a new way,” said Koichi Matsuzawa, president of Kirin Brewery

Morning Drunk Driver Hits Philly Airport Runway [Video]

This is from the “Things we wish didn’t happen category.”  An intoxicated man (at 10 am no less) smashed his jeep through the gate at Philadelphia International Airport, and down the runway.  No word if the dumbass thought he could take off.

The driver was identified as 24-year-old Kenneth Richard Mazik of Chadds Ford, Pa.  To security’s credit, the airport was only shut down for 35 minutes.

Bell’s Expansion On Track For May, Oberon 3/26

First and foremost, Bell’s Brewing’s summer seasonal- Oberon will be released on March 26th, 2012.  Get ready for Spring. New keg can artwork appears above.

The brewery’s $52 million dollar expansion is moving along nicely.  The new brewery should be open by May, 2012. From Bell’s:

Our $52 million construction and expansion is coming along here in Galesburg. Our brewing vessels have been unwrapped and the spent grain silo has been assembled. Crews are busy assembling all the piping and wiring necessary to get our new 200-barrel brewhouse up and running. Local woodworkers are also busy working on the handrails, banisters, front entrance and many other details for the new addition that will compliment existing features at the Eccentric Cafe in downtown Kalamazoo. The lumber they are working with is locally grown as well. We anticipate opening our new brewery in May.

About Oberon:

Bell’s Oberon is a wheat ale fermented with Bell’s signature house ale yeast, mixing a spicy hop character with mildly fruity aromas. The addition of wheat malt lends a smooth mouthfeel, making it a classic summer beer.

Style: American Pale Wheat Ale
Availability: 12 oz bottles, Draft. Mini-keg cans. (Chubbies)
Arrival: Late March, 2012 (Summer Seasonal)

Terrapin Ships Hopzilla, Hop Karma

This is Hopzilla’s second appearance, this time as a part of Terrapin’s Monster Beer Tour,  in 12oz/4 packs.  It’s full of citra and centennial hops for a citrusy/pineapple hop punch.   Hopzilla! Doesn’t lay off when it comes to malt.  100% marris otter malt gives this hoppy reptile a honey like mouth feel. Hopzilla has body for sure!

Hop Karma was shifted to seasonal status starting this year.  Atlanta Terrapin rep Steve Hayes describes this beer like this:

Hop Karma Brown IPA (or dark, hoppy goodness as I like to call it). You probably remember this beer, as it was once part of our year-round offerings, but it has now been moved into the Seasonal Sessions line because we simply couldn’t keep up with production all year long. The dark roasted, coffee-like flavors of the Chocolate, Crystal, and Dark Munich malts give way to piney and cirtus flavors from Spike’s combination of flavorful, American hops…yum

The last of the Moo-Hoo is on shelves now.  This is your last shot at it before next fall.  Get to drinking…
Hop Karma
Hops:  Chinook, Centennial, Columbus, Nugget, Willamette
Malt: Chocolate, Crystal 65, Crystal 85, Dark Munich, Special Roast, 2 Row Pale, Victory
6% ABV, 65 IBUs
Hopzilla!
Style: Imperial IPA
Hops: Bravo, Chinook, Centennial, Citra
Malts: Marris Otter
10.7% ABV, 110 IBUs
