Port’s 5 Year Party

Port/Lost Abbey Brewing celebrates 5 years on May 14th, 2011.  The party will be held on site at the brewery in San Marcos, California.  Tickets are 5 dollars and split into 2 sessions for your drinking pleasure.

Come party with Port Brew height ing and The Lost Abbey and celebrate our 5th Anniversary on Saturday May 14, 2011.  Like last year we’ll be breaking the party into two sessions and limiting the number of guests so everyone can relax and enjoy themselves Items on tap for our daylong festivities include specialty kegs from the barrel archives, bottled beer releases, special barrelhouse tours, amazing street food from our in-house chefs, and live music from our two special guests –Kiera and the Lesbians and The Professors.

Brews:

Following our anniversary tradition, not only will we be loading all our taps with the latest and greatest of our beers, but we’ll be releasing Anniversary – the fifth release of our hoppy, strong pale ale from the Port Brewing side of the house.

DOBO Tomme Arthur will also be delving into the storied Lost Abbey barrel and bottle archives to give guests an opportunity to sample rare brews from the past half-decade. (Look for special bottles, and secret taps all day long!)

Food:
For those of you who enjoy five star food, this year chef Jason Danderand will be heading the outdoor kitchen and barbequing, steaming, smoking, broiling and baking his way through a stunning assortment of street foods with a unique “San Diego” culinary spin.

Special Tours:
Lead Brewer and Keeper of the Barrels, Ryan Fields, and our new QAD, Gwen Conlley (née Flying Dog), will be hosting tours of our famous barrelhouse, giving guests an opportunity to see where our beers await the angels on high (and possibly learn a few of the secrets behind one of American craft brewing’s most famous barrel programs).

Music:
We’ll have two bands playing this year. The first session will feature the vintage-tinged garage, folk, rock and roll sounds of Kiera and the Lesbians. The second session will play host to our favorite lounge lizards, The Professors, who will be performing their own special brand of sophisticated Surf Music.

Port Brewing’s 5 Anniversary Brew

Port Brewing celebrates 5 years in May.  When you’re a brewer, you release a special beer to celebrate.  The 2011 edition of Anniversary ale is light, hoppy and summery. Per Port:

A massively hopped strong pale ale brewed to celebrate our anniversary each year.  Anniversary Ale is light gold to pale orange in color and offers a potent aroma of fresh pine and citrus with some warming alcohols present.

Style: Pale Ale
Hops: Columbus, Amarillo Simcoe.  Columbus & Amarilla (Dry hop)

Taste Expecations From The Brewer: The taste is a thick, chewy hop presence only barely contained by balancing malts.  The finish is pure hop expression with a moderate warming alcohol sensation.

Availability: 22oz bombers. Draft.
Arrival: Late Spring / Early Summer Release
10% ABV

Beer With Hot Rocks

Port Brewing makes a beer with hot rocks. Yes, hot rocks.  “Hot Rocks Lager” is brewed by adding glowing hot granite to the brew kettle.  In doing so, the rocks cause a “super boil,” caramelizing the sugars.  The result is smokey toffee & caramel.  According to Port, these wouldn’t be prevalent in a normal boil.  Hot Rocks is a spring seasonal, first released in 2009.

Style: Dunkel
Hops: German Magnum, Tettnanger

Taste Expectations (Per Port):  The flavor is a robust dark lager with layer upon layer of caramel sweetness with just enough hopiness and malt to prevent it from being cloying. The finish is sweet with toffee and cocoa notes and a faint dryness.

Availability: 220z bombers. Early Spring seasonal.

6.2% ABV

Port Brewing’s Mongo Double IPA Hits Bottles

Port Brewing’s Double IPA has arrived for the first time in the bottle.  It’s a big imperial IPA named after a kitten. Yep, a kitten.

Beer Backstory From Port:
A tribute beer brewed to honor the memory of our fallen solider, Columbus (a brewery kitten we knicknamed Mongo), who used each of his 9 lives in a short — but brazen — 10 months on this planet.

Let’s just say the little dude lived a hard life. Only, he wasn’t so little. In fact, he was the largest of five kittens born at the brewery in 2009. Mongo was so large in fact that his brothers and sisters kicked him out of the litter.

I told you dude had it rough.

Style: Imperial IPA
Hops: Columbus, Amarillo, Centennial, Cascade and Simcoe

Taste Expectations: Sweet caramel malts mix with big citrus & grapefruit hops.  Orange & pineapple show up too. It’s a big, balanced imperial ipa.

Availability: 22oz Bombers. Draft.  Year round.

8.5% ABV

Midnight Sessions Now Midnight Expressions

This might be old new for some, new for others.  “Midnight Sessions” black lager by Port Brewing is now “Midnight Expressions”.

Commercial Description:
It’s not often that a great swell coincides with a full moon. But when they collide, nature affords us a rare opportunity to paddle out long after everyone has called it a day.  These moments are a solitary pursuit with empty lineups. But those who carve graceful lines under a full moon understand how things can be dark, lonely and rewarding at the same time.  So next time you paddle in from an overcrowded beach break, remember that nothing tastes better than a cold beer after a session.

Style: Schwarzbier

5.5% ABV
