New Realm Brewing wins bid on Green Flash Brewing’s Virginia equipment

Atlanta based New Realm Brewing ready to grow in their first six months of operation. The brewery has won the bidding for Green Flash assets of their east coast facility.

PICS: INSIDE NEW REALM BREWING

The 58,000 square foot facility in Virginia Beach, Virginia was built by San Diego based Green Flash Brewing. The facility was recently closed after Comerica Bank foreclosed on outstanding bank loans to Green Flash/Alpine Beer brands.

New Realm has confirmed the purchase of the brewhouse and is currently discussing potential ideas for the existing Green Flash lease on the taproom.

American Beer Works of which New Realm founder Carey Falcone has the lead role, also purchased a $5 million dollar tract of land in Charlotte, North Carolina last fall. Falcone told Beer Street Journal in February that this land is earmarked for a future New Realm build, but there are no immediate plans to expand to the city.

According to Bob Powers in a just-issued press release, New Realm’s current facility in Atlanta is already at capacity after just four months, and 60-barrel tank expansions.

First This equipment acquisition is a unique opportunity to meet growing demand while continuing to focus on quality and consistency. This new equipment will allow our team to brew even more of the beer that we feel passionate about.”  Bob Powers, Chief Commercial Officer and co-founder

In a phone call with Powers and Falcone, the duo reiterated their commitment Atlanta. “The city has truly embraced us, and we couldn’t be more grateful,” Falcone said. “We have no plans to distribute to any state we aren’t physically brewing in.

“This opportunity to buy this equipment was a deal we couldn’t pass up,” Powers elaborated. “The situation surrounding it is unfortunate, but considering our capacity issues already, we were going to have to make a move regardless,” he said.

Powers and Falcone have been planning to purchase another brewhouse, but that plan wasn’t so immediate until the Green Flash auction. The duo is still discussing what to do with the newly acquired equipment. The Virginia Beach facility was built for Green Flash, and subsequently leased to them. “There’s a lot of opportunity with that space” Falcone admits, “but we’re not sure we’re ready for that undertaking yet.”

New Realm started canning Euphonia Pilsner and Hoplandia IPA in March. Currently, the brewery only distributes to Atlanta and some surrounding cities.

It’s springtime in Atlanta, the demand for New Realm is extremely high, and all their tanks are full.

It’s going to be a great summer.

New Realm Hoplandia IPA will soon hit distro

New Realm Hoplandia IPA

New Realm Hoplandia IPA won’t be a draft-only offering much longer. The brewery is canning the flagship offering this month.

Atlanta, Georgia based New Realm Brewing opened their doors on the city’s beltline in January. In a few short weeks, Hoplandia IPA is assuming the role of “flagship status” already.

Mitch Steele hails from the hoppy American West Coast, making that influence undeniable in every sip. Warrior, Simcoe, and Centennial hops blossom with every sip. Think citrus, peaches, and orange zest. No, don’t ask if it’s hazy. Ironically, Steele denies any “coast” claiming with Hoplandia:

Hoplandia is no ordinary IPA. It’s not confined to the style of the West Coast, East Coast or whatever coast. This lush IPA is something sublimely different and now in cans, more Atlantans will be able to experience Hoplandia for themselves.

All coasts aside, New Realm Hoplandia IPA, as well as Euphonia PIlsner, will soon be available in 12-ounce cans at the brewery, as well as Georgia distribution as we head into April.

Style: IPA
Hops: Centennial, Warrior, Simone
Malts: Pale, Pilsner, Crystal

Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft. Year-Round

There’s a new pilsner in cans in the southeast: New Realm Euphonia

New Realm Euphonia Pilsner canstack

New Realm Euphonia Pilsner is being canned for the first time this month.

In the two short months that Atlanta’s New Realm Brewing has been opened, two beers have become headliners – Hoplandia IPA and Euphonia Pilsner. While one has brewmaster Mitch Steele’s hoppy west coast fingerprints all over it, the pilsner leans a bit more traditional.

Steele uses Hersbrucker, Huell Melon, Saphir and Sterling hops on a German malt “blackboard”. The finished beer is the beautifully smooth, dangerously drinkable, delightfully crisp pilsners that is hard to put down. (Ed. note: we haven’t left the brewery drinking less than at least four each time.)

“… Euphonia Pilsner, our refreshing, easy sipping pils has been a favorite amongst our brewers and guests at our bar.” Mitch Steele, Co-Founder & Brewmaster

Today the brewery is hard at work canning Euphonia PIlsner for the first time. 12-ounce cans of the crisp pilsner will be available at the brewery first, with distribution to follow in April 2018.

Hops: Huell Melon, Saphir, Sterling
Malts: German Pilsner

A new level for Georgia Beer. New Realm Brewing opens this month

Carey Falcone got his start in the beer business nearly 30 years ago while working for his family’s distributor. “I worked just about every job in that place over the course of 17 years, from sales to marketing, revenue management, and logistics.”

It was the logistics aspect of the job that brought Falcone to Atlanta, working for Americold Logistics. “Basically, I got a great offer and I couldn’t pass it up so my family flew south.”  As Carey is explaining his background to us, the smile on his face faded at the mere mention of leaving the beer industry. It’s obvious where his heart is.

“After so many years in the beer business, things just didn’t feel right. It’s not as sexy. It’s not as fun. I had to go back,” he says.

Eight years ago, that fire for beer manifested itself into the form of a business plan that would lead to New Realm Brewing.

Thanks to the logistics game, Falcone had traveled the world. That means a lot of beer stops along the way. “I hit Belgium breweries really hard. I saw amazing rooftop beer garden concepts in London, Berlin, and Munich,” he said. “What if the best of these concepts were put under one roof? Why not Atlanta?” The business plan had really started taking shape.

Carey has known his co-founder Bob Powers for nearly 25 years. They worked together at Americold, at an equity firm after Americold, and now together at New Realm Brewing.

“For us, it was about doing something different. It was about taking 3 guys who spent their lives in the beer business and making it their life’s work,” Carey says with the biggest smile of the day on his face.

Taking the ideas from some of the best breweries and beer gardens in the world, Falcone and Powers created a massive strategic plan, partnered with the right financial backers, and got to work.

The duo found a building that wasn’t even publically listed for sale, right on the Atlanta Beltline, and turned the 20,000 square foot space into 40,000 square feet with rooftop bars, two event spaces, and a nearly 500-seat restaurant. They turned an old industrial building into a work of art, with exposed steel and iron, and a brewhouse that is already the envy of their Georgia neighbors. Every bit of this build is bold, beautiful, and aggressive, but the boldest flourish of New Realm Brewing is not the architecture – it lies in the brewmaster.

This shiny new monument to beer lacked a brewer. One evening over a few too many beers, Falcone and Powers made a power list of America’s best craft brewers. “The list really was an all-star list, but one floated to the top – Mitch Steele,” Falcone said. “The more I thought about it, he really did complete the puzzle.”

Mitch Steele is undeniably one of the best brewers in American craft. He studied at the University of California Davis, wrote “Authoring IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale,” and most famously, the brewmaster for Stone Brewing. India Pale Ale in America has only improved with Steele at the kettle. So Falcone flew to California, took Mitch out for beers and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. New Realm Brewing now has their very own hoppy rockstar. Sound ballsy? We think so too.

On January 8th, New Realm Brewing will open their doors for the first time, with a true west coast brewer at the helm. The 20,000-barrel annual capacity facility is not only highly anticipated but sets a record for the largest single brewery opening in Georgia history. Every bit of Falcone’s creation is about to pay off. He’s checked all the major boxes, from porches to a skyline view, plus it’s on the burgeoning Beltline. The multi-million dollar operation is nothing short of incredible.

“Georgia is home. We really wanted to give an experience to the craft beer community here in Atlanta. We’ve missed out on so much thanks to restrictive laws. Now it’s our turn.”

This is what Atlanta’s New Realm Brewing will look like

New Realm Brewing Render

The name ‘Mitch Steele’ has been synonymous with California’s Stone Brewing for a long time. In 2016, he announced his departure.

If you were thinking his next stop would be another brewery California, you weren’t alone. Then, New Realm Brewing was announced in Atlanta, Georgia.

Steele, along with partners Bob Powers and Carey Falcone, are opening the brewpub (brewery) on Atlanta’s burgeoning Beltline this fall. Above is the first rendering of the new space.

New Realm Brewing will boast an industrial feel, with reclaimed hickory and railroad timbers. The space will seat 400, plus special event space for weddings and private parties.

The 20 barrel, 4-vessel Steinecker brewhouse will boast 20,000 barrels annually at maximum capacity. Besides draft, New Realm is planning to bottle and can as well.

Thanks to newly passed Georgia SB85 (that goes into effect on September 1st), New Realm Brewing will operate as a brewery, instead of a brewpub. This will allow them to both distribute their beer and sell to-go from their location. This license also means that consumers will only find New Realm beer on site – no other breweries, liquor or wine.

The construction of New Realm Brewing is being handled by Choate Construction. The brewery at 550 Somerset Terrace NE is expected to open in fall 2017.

Mitch Steele’s new brewpub in Atlanta has a name

Mitch Steele, one of the most well known members of Escondido, California based Stone Brewing, departed the company in June. Many thought Steele would start a new project on the west coast. In an interesting twist, his next stop will be Atlanta, Georgia.

Steele, along with partners Carey Falone, and Bob Powers, have signed a lease for a property on Atlanta’s Beltine. The Poncey- Highland based brewpub, recently dubbed New Realm Brewing, will feature house brewed beer, artisanal food, and a fun atmosphere. The new location will feature a rooftop bar, beer garden, and home brewing classes.

“I had an amazing time at Stone and I am very thankful for my experiences there. Now, I am looking forward to the opportunity to become part of the growing craft beer movement in Atlanta and the Southeast.” – Mitch Steele

Breaking ground on the 20,000 square foot space soon, New Realm Brewing is expected to be operational in 2017. Located at 820 Ralph McGill Avenue, in Atlanta.
