Bourbon Barrel Coffee Beans in Modern Times City of the Dead

Modern Times City of the Dead

Modern Times City of the Dead has just been bottled by the California brewery.

Modern Times City of the Dead is a coffee stout, that uses house-roasted coffee beans, aged in bourbon barrels. How do you bourbon barrel age coffee beans? Take the green beans that haven’t been roasted yet. At this point they are ver susceptible to new flavors. Fill a bourbon barrel full of beans and wait for the magic to happen. Finally, carefully roast the beans so as not to cover up the barrel aged notes.

Rich, full-bodied, & bursting with barrel-aged coffee aroma & flavor, this coffee stout is truly a unique & delicious animal. We were the first brewery to ever make beer with barrel-aged coffee, and now we’re the first to do a large-scale bottle release. And, of course, we roasted it all ourselves. Cool stuff!

Modern Times City of the Dead is available in 22oz bottles, starting January 27th.

Style: Stout (w/ Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft
Release: 1/27/15

7.5% ABV

Modern Times Funky Lomaland Releases 1/15

Modern Times Funky Lomaland

Modern Times Funky Lomaland started in the fall of 2013 as Lomaland, the brewery’s year round saison. The brewery added Brettanomyces Claussenii & Brettanomyces Bruxellensis Trois, two funky yeasts for extra flavor character, and aged it in red wine barrels.

These two slow-moving yeast strains added a marvelously funky complexity that starts with a barnyardy/fruity aroma and continues in the dry, deliciously complex flavor. The long rest in red wine barrels has given Funky Lomaland a gorgeously fruit-saturated finish & an oaky, rich backbone.

700 bottles of Modern Times Funky Lomaland go on sale on January 15th, release 1/22. Bottles are $18 dollars, with a 3 bottle limit.

Style: American Wild Ale (Barrel Aged. Wine Aged.)
Availability: 750ml bottles
Release: 1/22/15

Modern Times City of the Sun Returns. Even Hoppier

Modern Times City of the Sun

Modern Times City of the Sun bottles are on sale in the tap room today. The IPA is brewed with a fresh crop of Mosaic, Motueka, and Experimental Hop 05256. The brewery let this hoppy offering sit longer on the dry-hop then usual, making this beer even more “punchy.”

This beer was tasty as hell the first two times we brewed it, but the third time really did turn out to be the proverbial charm. We used the freshie freshie gnar gnar 2014 crop year hops (new hops generally become available in the winter, so these hops are only about a month old), and we let the beer sit on its massive dry hop load 50% longer.

Modern Times City of the Sun IPA will be available throughout SoCal, the Central Coast, & Maui this month. $6.99 a bottle.

Style: IPA
Hops: Mosaic, Motueka, Experimental Hop 05256
Availability: 22oz Bottles

7.6% ABV

Modern Times Sour Bottles On Sale December 4th

Modern Times Beer (San Diego, CA) is gearing up for a sour beer release on December 11th, 2014. This will be the brewery’s first public release.

The release features five sour/wild offerings, each spent 15 months aging in red wine barrels with a mix of souring bacteria. Each beer was fermented in stainless first, then transferred to barrels. Each barrel contained a mix of more than 40 strains of Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus, & Pediococius from all over the world.

The lineup:

Empty Hats – Oud Bruin. The flavor starts with a big red wine component, quickly followed by a strong tartness, funk, and a hint of warm malt on the finish, which lingers for ages.

New from Nowhere – Flanders Red. The flavor starts out with raspberry, strawberry, and oak, quickly followed by a puckering sourness, and a long, red fruit-drenched finish.

Rampart Junction – Peach Sour. After 11 months in red wine barrels, we added 50lbs per barrel of fresh, organic, heirloom peaches, which spent 5 months in the barrels before bottling.

Oracle of the Bottle – Cabernet Grape Sour. (News From Nowhere is the base beer.) After 11 months in red wine barrels, we added 50lbs per barrel of Cabernet grapes, which spent 5 months in the barrels before bottling.

Palace of the Cracked Heads – Nectarine Sour. (Empty Hats is the base beer.) After 11 months in red wine barrels, we added 50lbs per barrel of fresh, organic, heirloom nectarines, which spent 5 months in the barrels before bottling.

Bottles retail for $25 – $30 dollars each and can be pre-purchased online starting December 4th, 2014. You must pick them up in person before February 12, 2015. (No Proxies).
