Anchor Brewing Company (San Francisco) announced today the release of their new Anchor IPA.

The spirit of the California gold rush inspires the art and idea behind Anchor IPA. The 19th century rush to California was to “See the Elephant” a metaphor for the pursuit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You’ll see the elephant hand drawn by Anchor artist James Stitt.

The beer is brewed with whole cone hops, 2-row barley, and pours an amber color. In honor of San Francisco Beer Week, Anchor IPA will launch in California all month. Select U.S. markets will receive bottles and draft starting in March, 2014.

Anchor Brewing Has New “Anchor IPA” In The Works

One of America’s most revered craft brewers has an IPA in the works. Their newest adventure Anchor IPA is a testament not only to California gold rush history, but the IPA itself.  Brewed with whole cone hops, and 2-row barley.

The California Gold Rush lured thousands west “to see the elephant,” a 19th century metaphor for the hopeful but risky pursuit of happiness, adventure, and forture. As early as 1849, India Pale Ale – prepared by British brewers for export to to India by adding dry hops to barrels of hoppy ale – was also heading west, from England around the horn to San Francisco. Thirsty ‘49ers savored imported IPAs, but it wasn’t until 1975 that Anchor, America’s original craft brewery, pioneered the revival of dry-hopped handmade ales. Now, that tradition fast-forwards to an adventurous new brew: Anchor IPA. Made with 2-row barley malt and fresh whole-cone hops, its bright amber color, spiky bitterness, malty depth, and clean finish unite to create a uniquely flavorful, memorable, and timeless IPA.

Anchor IPA will be packaged in 22oz and12oz bottles, and Draft. Release details to follow from Anchor.

Style: IPA
Availability: 22oz Bombers, 12oz Bottles, Draft
Arrival: TBA

6.5% ABV

Anchor Spirits Brings You “White Christmas”

Every year since 1975, Anchor Brewing has created a new Christmas Ale. Each recipe is a little different, just like each label. The release celebrates the joy and newness of life. This year, you can celebrate a little more.

Anchor Distilling, the spirits division of Anchor Brewing has created White Christmas, a new spirit that has been distilled for 2012 Anchor Christmas Ale.

“At the end of the holiday season last year, we found ourselves with remaining stock of 2012 Christmas Ale, so rather than dumping it down the drain, we decided to try distilling it,” says David King, president of Anchor Distilling.

This beer meets liquor crossover is quite literally  “The Spirit of Christmas Past.”  White Christmas will be solely available in California for the Christmas season, and nationally in 2014.  90 Proof. ERP $49.99

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Round and soft aroma with an inviting complexity. Bright holiday spices, clove, orange peel, poached apple.

Palate: Mellow on the front palate, with structure and intensity coming to life on the finish, which warms and lingers for a long time with notes of spiced apple, baking spices and dried fruit.

Of course, what spirit would be good without a good cocktail recipe:

Anchor White Manhattan

2oz White Christmas
1oz Maurin White Vermouth
.25oz Luxardo Triplum
Dash Fee Bros. Orange Bitters
Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and stir with ice. Strain and serve up with an orange twist.

Anchor’s Announces Zymaster #5

Anchor Brewing Company announced this week the fifth release in their Zymaster Series – Harvest One American Pale Ale.

Each beer in the series is a brewing experiment using different yeasts, hops, and more. This release makes use of a special experimental hop that isn’t commercially available yet. The hop doesn’t even have a name. This secret hop, combined with Nugget gives this beer flavors of “tree ripened peaches and fresh melon.”

Harvest one debuts this week in 22oz bombers in the tap room in California. National distribution to follow.

Style: Pale Ale
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft. One time release

7.2% ABV
