Heavy Seas Announces “Plank”

Update on Heavy Seas Brewing’s announcement.

Heavy Seas Beer announces Plank — a series of beers showcasing unique wood ageing treatments to add flavor and nuance. Our first, Plank I, features an Olde Style English Ale.

Over a year in development, Plank boasts a new and revolutionary way of adding wood to the brewing process.  The beer is allowed to mature on the wood during secondary fermentation.  Combinations of many different woods, beer styles, yeasts and aging times were tested.   We quietly gathered feedback at pint nights featuring Heavy Seas firkins containing ‘mystery wood’.  Outside taste testers gave their reviews and a final recipe was written to bring out the unique essence of this wood.

Plank is the first beer to ever use yellow poplar. Prepared in a not so traditional way, it will change the how you perceive wood-aged beers.   A revolutionary thermal process releases the compounds in the wood through controlled heat in a way that “toasting” cannot do.   This thermal process can be applied to any species of wood, creating something truly unique. Have we created an entirely new genre for wood-aged beer?  You decide.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing more about this innovative way of wood aging beer and the crew who developed it.  Plank I will be the first, but not the last of its kind as we continue to explore the possibilities.   Watch for its release in the Mid-Atlantic area in time to celebrate American Craft Beer Week in May. Plank will join the Mutiny Fleet portfolio of beers available in 22oz bottles and very limited draft.

Sneak previews will be available at the Extreme Beer Fest in Boston next weekend.  Look for them under the alias One Eyed Woody (Plank I) and  Two Eyed Woody (an experimental recipe).

Lost Abbey’s Framboise de Amorosa

Raspberry fiends, here’s one for you. Lost Abbey (San Marcos, CA) is releasing Framboise de Amorosa again in 2011.  LA touts this beer as “their first foray into the world of raspberry beers.”

Amorosa begins as Lost and Found Ale (Abbey ale, w/ raisins).  After brewing, it’s transferred into red wine barrels where it spends the next year getting raspberries added to it 3 different times.  Here’s the the beer equation (adding Lost & Found, plus the extra TLC)

Style: Dubbel, Lost & Found. American Wild Ale, Amorosa.
Hops: German Magnum and German Tettnang
Malts: Two Row, Wheat, Medium and Dark English Crystal, Special B and Chocolate Malt.
Adjuncts: Dextrose, raisin puree.
1 year, red wine barrels.
Raspberries

2011 Release is March 26th.

LA’s Flavor Profile: The first sip produces a sweet start with a long drawn out sour finish. So of the sweetnewss from the raspberries comes out before acidic notes join the mix. On the back end of the beer is a smoothing oak character which keeps the beer from becoming dull.

Availability: 375 ml bottles. Lost Abbey ships to 8 states.  Who/where gets them after the release? Mystery.

7% ABV

Bridgeport Highland Ambush

Bridgeport Brewing (Portland, OR) has brought back a beer they brewed 20 years ago – Highland Ambush.  It’s a scotch ale with a barrel twist -and brewed by a Ramsay.  I’m on board with that.  Read Bridgeport’s history for the lowdown.

First brewed in the 1980s as a special beer for the BrewPub at BridgePort, Highland Ambush is making its triumphant return more than 20 years later. Stuart MacLean Ramsay, then pub manager, conceptualized the brew to pay homage to his Scottish heritage. This year’s Highland Ambush takes inspiration from the original ale using NW pale ale malt along with a Scottish crystal and roast malt.  The hopping rate of Highland Ambush has been toned down to help highlight the complementing vanilla from the American oak bourbon barrels and caramel-toffee malt nuances. Reddish-Brown in color, Highland Ambush will warm the coldest of toes and noses this holiday season.

Style: Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy (Barrel Aged)

Taste Expectations: Herbal hops, toasted malts. Biscuit. Caramel & toffee, vanilla, oak. Complex.

Availability: 22oz bombers.  Rare draft offerings. Limited release.

6.8% ABV

Lost Abbey Red Poppy 2011

As we traverse deeper into 2011, the release dates of breweries bigger/popular releases announced.  The Lost Abbey’s beers are all quite notable for sure, but this one is a stand out.  It’s Red Poppy, a Flanders-style Red Ale brewed with red cherries, aged on French oak.  All of that adds up to a beer with a big fan that comes highly recommended.

Lost Abbey has announced Red Poppy’s release date for 2011 – February 12th.  The beer is slated for brewery release in San Marcos, CA from noon – 6pm.  Bottles will be $15 dollars, 6 bottle max. After the release, the beers will go into Lost Abbey’s distribution network on an extremely limited basis.  Tomme Arthur mentioned that the sour beers (like Red Poppy) will be hit or miss for Georgia/Pennsylvania and other markets further away from the home state.  Be on the lookout.

Style: Flanders Oud Bruin
