Fungus Beer: Smuttynose Satchmo

Smuttynose SatchmoSmuttynose Brewing Satchmo.  Ale brewed with mushrooms, aged on oak chips.  The 13th addition to Smutty’s Short Batch Series.

Satchmo is a low-gravity, lightly hopped brown porter that gets its unique mouthfeel from 35 pounds of dried black trumpet mushrooms. Our first collaboration brew was made with Chef Evan Mallet, of Portsmouth’s Black Trumpet Bistro. Chef Mallet, an avid mushroom forager, suggested the idea, and with the help of his staff, collected a portion of the black trumpets from his land in South Berwick, Maine. Satchmo will be released in our Short Batch Series in early November and will be on tap at Chef Mallet’s restaurant in Portsmouth’s historic water front. We will also bottle a small portion for sale exclusively at Smuttynose.

Availability: 22oz bombers. Released at Portsmouth Black Trumpet Bistro, & Brewery Arrival: November, 2011

Weyerbacher Idiot’s Drool will debut on November 17th.  When Weyerbacher called it an Old Ale, they meant it.  Drool has spent a full 4.5 years in oak barrels.

Head Brewer, Chris Wilson says, “It’s a full-bodied, deep burgundy ale with an incredibly complex character. Extended aging has imbued this beer with notes of vanilla, oak, leather and sweet sherry. A mild acidity and subtle carbonation rounds out the palate. Truly fantastic!”

Wild Heaven’s 4th Beer “Eschaton” Ships

Wild Heaven just crossed the 1 year mark.  That calls for a beer celebration.  Today the brewery shipped Eschaton, their 4th release since launch.

First lets tackle the name – Eschaton. Translated from Greek it means “End Of Time.”  Note the Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse on the label.   Artist Adam Houston based it on a pencil sketch by  German artist Albrecht Dürer.  The beer is a Belgian quadrupel aged on pinot noir oak chips.  No candi sugar of any kind was used in the brew.  Believe me, you want this one.  Wild Heaven is truly giving you something to geek out about.  This is just a glimpse at great things to come from them.

Draft will be available in Georgia by the end of the week.  12oz bottles by the end of the year.

In other Wild Heaven news, the brewery is working on a lower ABV beer due out in the spring, alongside prepping for their brewery build in Decatur, Georgia.

10.5% ABV
