Almanac Farm to Barrel Blueberry Released
Almanac Farmer’s Reserve Blueberry is now available. The newest Farm to Barrel Series release features blueberries sour ale, aged in wine barrels.
We selected the very best hand-picked blueberries grown in the hills of Butte County, California, and added them to a sour golden ale aged in wine barrels. The resulting beer is infused with a delicate blueberry essence, a reminder of far off summer days.
Almanac Farmer’s Reserve Blueberry is available in 375ml bottles, and draft.

Upland Sour Public Lottery: January, 2015
On January 29th, Upland Brewing Company (Bloomington, IN) will open up an online lottery for the purchase of five sour ales. Winners can purchase 2 bottles of each style. Details on the five styles are in the gallery below.
The five releases include: Upland Blueberry Lambic, Dantalion Dark Wild Ale, Blackberry Lambic, Vinosynth White, Vinosynth Red.
The lottery opens up at 12 noon, EDT and ends February 5th, 2015. Bottles are $25 dollars each, and must be picked up at the specified location by March 4th.

- Dantalion is our demonically named sour ale based on the Oud Bruin beer style. Medium brown in color, Dantalion has hints of chocolate, Munich malts, and rye. We also incorporate a spice blend containing ginger, coriander, star anise, grains of paradise, and black pepper to create a gentle halo of spice character. The beer is fermented on the same selection of yeasts and microbes as our base lambic, and aged for up to 8 months or more in white oak barrels.

- Lambics have been made in Belgium for over 500 years, and we are honoring this tradition by brewing our own Indiana version. Upland lambics are fermented by wild yeast and aged in oak casks for over a year, which creates a tart, complex beer. We then add whole blueberries from Huber Orchard in Starlight, Indiana, giving the beer enticing aromas and flavors. The beer is bottle conditioned, which adds a zesty and refreshing carbonation. Upland lambic is the perfect drink to share with friends over a plate of good cheese and fresh fruit.

- Our friends at Oliver Winery have had a hand in our Sour Ale program since the beginning. The first oak barrels acquired by Upland were purchased from Oliver. Now, many years later, we are excited to present this collaboration between friends that represents our Sour Program full circle. VinoSynth Red is a blend of 50% Sour Reserve and 50% Malefactor Flanders-style Red Ale aged on Catawba grapes. Catawba is a native North American variety, known for making jams and jellies, and distinctly juice, fruity, exotic wines. Malefactor was blended with Sour Reserve to develop more body, mild bourbon barrel character, and a layered acidity to complement the Catawba’s innate sweet, fruity notes.

Now, many years later, we are excited to present this collaboration between friends that represents our Sour Program full circle. VinoSynth White is 100% Sour Reserve aged on locally grown Vidal Blanc grapes. Vidal Blanc is a French varietal with hints of tropical fruit flavor, commonly utilized to develop ice wines. Our Sour Reserve lends itself wonderfully to enveloping the acidity of the grape with notes of lactic acid, and allows the polite pineapple and grapefruit character of Vidal Blanc to shine on the palate.

Jester King World’s Worst Twin Releases January 16th
Evil Twin Brewery (Denmark) and Jester King Brewery (Austin, TX) have teamed up on a unique, barrel aged beer, World’s Worst Twin.
The beer is inspired by Evil Twin’s Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergso favorite coffee. Only, the brewers didn’t use coffee in World’s Worst Twin. Instead Jester King and Evil Twin used highly kilned malts were used in the mash. This imparted a roasty, chocolatey character, and Texas blueberries in the fermentation to provide some fruity notes and acidity. World’s Worst Twin was matured in oak barrels with native yeast and bacteria.
World’s worst twin is inspired by favorite coffee of our friend Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergso of Evil Twin Brewing. If we just added it to the beer, the subtle nuances of this delicate coffee would have been hopelessly lost. Rather, we sought to re-create it’s flavors and aromas in our own unique way through wild fermentation in oak barrels with blueberries and wort brewed with Rich toasty malts.
Jester King Evil Twin World’s Worst Twin will be available in 750ml bottles starting January 16th, at 4pm. Brewery release only. Those in Austin, Texas and catch Jeppe at Jester King for the release party.

Jester King Colour Five Releases on Halloween
Jester King Brewery (Austin, TX) will release Colour Five on Halloween. Colour Five is a blend of barrel aged sour beer with Texas blueberries.
The first attempt at this blueberry barrel aged sour beer failed in 2013. That batch was too vinegary (i.e. too much acetic acid.) The brewery decided to do something different for Colour Five.
This batch is 89% Das Uberkind, and 11% RU55. (The failed batch was all RU55 Sour Red.) The blueberries were frozen prior to refermentation to stave off acetobacter (makes acetic acid) and was allowed to ferment in stainless steel, where the brewery can push away oxygen (again, inhibiting acetobacter.) These steps (simplified for the story) helped Jester King bring Colour Five to fruition.
Jester King Colour Five will be available when the brewery opens at 4pm. By the glass, or 500ml bottles. ($16)

A Berry New Take on New Holland’s Incorrigible
New Holland Brewing (Holland, MI) is adding a new rendition of their Incorrigible White Sour Ale, released last October.
Incorrigible Reserve looks to be the same base white ale aged is oak barrels, but this time with a blend of local Michigan berries.
Local blueberries fuel a second flavorful fermentation of this beer, while it resides for several months in our Hour of Funk sour cellar. Wild yeast and bacteria contribute tart sourness and complex mineral character, prior to an oak-barrel conditioning with Michigan blackberries.
New Holland Incorrigible Reserve will be packaged in 22oz bottles.

First Blueberry Beer From Allagash Launches This Month
The first ever blueberry beer that Allagash Brewing (Portland, ME) has ever created, Little Sal, launches on May 19th.
Little Sal is brewed with local Maine blueberries and aged in red wine barrels with souring bacteria Lactobaccilus and Pediococcus.
Bottles go on sale at the brewery at 10 am. Very small quantity available for this release.
