Firestone Walker §ucaba Releases 1/28

You knew this beer as Abacus.   ZD Wines has a wine called Abacus also.  The winery thinks you are too dumb to know the difference, and sued Firestone Walker for trademark infringement.  They settled out of court, and FW stopped using the Abacus name as of June, 2011.  So that leaves the question – How the hell did they brewery decide on §ucaba?  Imagine Abacus in a mirror.  Backwards it would look pretty much like this  Abacus = §ucabA.  Hopefully ZD doesn’t sue for mirrored trademark infringement.

About the beer:
Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Style: Barleywine (Barrel Aged)
Hops: Bittering–Bravo; Late Kettle–East Kent Golding
Malts: Munton’s Pale, Crisp Maris Otter Pale, Munich, Dark & Light Crystal, Chocolate

Availability: 22oz bombers, boxed. Limited Draft.
Arrival: Tap room debut, 1/28/12
Distro Area:  CA, NV, OR, WA, AZ, CO, MO, Chicago, MA, NJ, NY, VA, PA, DC, MD

13% ABV

Stone Bottleworks 13th Anniversary

Bottleworks is a specialty beer store based in Seattle, Washington.  They have close to 1,000 bottles, growlers, and cellared beers, even chocolate.  This year they celebrate their 13th Anniversary.  Each year they do a special collaboration with a west coast brewery – last years being  XII from The Bruery.  This year’s Imagination Series beer is on from Stone Brewing13th Anniversary Ale.

When it came time to brew Bottleworks’ 13th anniversary beer, we turned to Stoen to brew this behemoth.  “The Matts” travelled down to San Diego in December to help create this 13-hop, 13-grain monument to our 13 years of selling great craft beer!

Spike & Jerome Bottles Finally Surface

Better late than never right? These bottles were expected back in July – finally making their shelves now.  Back in February, Terrapin travelled to Jura, Switzerland and collaborated with Brasserie Franches Montagnes.  (Actually, they were already on a European beer tour.)  In the cold of winter, the two breweries created a rye based barleywine.

The barleywine — “Spike & Jerome’s Ale” is actually derived from 20% rye, 80% malted barley.   The beer has been aging in rum barrels in Switzerland.

Style: Barleywine (Barrel aged)
Taste Expectations: Lots to discuss here. Rum. Sour oak. Dark fruit. Raisins. Figs. Lemons. Acidic notes, vanilla. Like I said. Lots.
Availability: Limited draft. 11.4 oz bottles.  One time brew.

10% ABV

It’s boozy.  It’s the first truly cellarable beer by brewmaster Glen Golden.

Style: Barleywine

Last Request is 1 of 2 recent new offerings by JH.  Check out Hop Riot. Both ship just weeks apart.

Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words liek “probably the best in world,”  “it works everytime”  etc?  This American barleywine ale says it how it is.  It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy, and definitely your kind of beer.  A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.
