Coming Soon: Hugh Malone 2010

Still waiting on Fluxus 2010 from Allagash Brewing?  Me too.   While you wait, here is another one from the Portland, Maine brewer to get ready for – Hugh Malone.

Hugh Malone is a beer born out of philanthropy – brewed to support Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA).  This Belgian IPA has an interesting brewing procedure.  From Allagash:

“Hugh Malone Ale’s base includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish.

Hugh Malone is a tribute to responsible agricultural practices and informed consumption. Allagash Brewing Company is donating $1 from every bottle of Hugh Malone sold to the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), the country’s oldest and largest state organic farmer coalition. MOFGA is a non-profit organization that educates farmers and gardeners about organic cultivation. They work to create resources for consumers interested in buying local and organic foods. With more than 5,500 members and 2,000 active volunteers MOFGA continues to inform consumers about the connection between healthful food and environmentally sound growing practices. www.mofga.org More on philanthropy.”

Taste Expectations: Fruits, mixed with bready, caramel malts.  The Belgian yeast shines throughout to give this IPA a nice Belgian flair.

Availability: 750ml Corked/Caged. Limited annual release.

Cellarability: Allagash recommends drinking this beer young.

Arrival: Late September, 2010.

8.5% ABV

CASK ALERT: Terrapin/De Proef Monstre Rouge

Recently, the brewers of Terrapin went over to Belgium to collaborate on a beer with De Proef Brewing.  The beer is due out in August, but a cask is premiering today at Brick Store Pub.

The beer is an imperial flanders red ale .  Spike Buckowski, head brewer at Terrapin states it is based off of “Big Hoppy Monster” a red ale.  Spike’s brewing style has a German influence so he added rye malt into the mix.  Brettanomyces yeast is used in Monstre Rouge, along with crystal malt and munich malt.  American hop strains were used, and as a nice finishing touch Rouge was aged on American oak.  This red ale will have a nice mix of both American and Belgian brewing styles.

More to follow on this beer as it gets closer to widespread release.

21st Amendment Arriving Soon!

THIS TIME FOR REAL! Coming in a matter of days to Atlanta is 21st Amendment Brewery.   21st Amendment hails from San Francisco, California.

It all started back in 2000 when Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan got to the business of brewing.  The friends met in 1995 in San Francisco.  Shaun O’Sullivan, once a paralegal and a photographer went to San Fran to take a job as assistant brewer at Triple Rock Brewery.  Nico Freccia — actor, writer, and restaurateur had yet another love — homebrewing.  In hopes to promote beer culture in the Los Angeles area, Freccia began writing for the Celebrator Beer News, a popular beer publication in the west.  Freccia and O’Sullivan took brewing science classes at UC Davis, and the rest is history.

The name 21st Amendment refers to the amendment to the United States Constitution repealing what I call the dark times — aka Prohibition.  Freccia and O’Sullivan examined San Francisco culture prior to Prohibition and found that local neighborhood breweries in San Francisco provided  not only a place for hand crafted beer that reflected the culture of the neighborhood to be served, but a place for people to gather, exchange conversations, ideas, politics and philosophies.  Prohibition destroyed this.  Taking a direct quote from their bio —

“In 1920, Prohibition wiped out this culture and put the “local” out of business.  For 13 years, social interaction was largely driven underground, to the speakeasies, where regular citizens became a nation of outlaws. “

So tragic, and true.  21st Amendment Brewery seeks to recapture the essence of those small neighborhood breweries, with a celebrated brewpub in the heart of San Francisco, and amazing craft beer to share.

All of 21st Amendment brews are in cans.  The initial offerings in Georgia will only be 2 brews —

Brew Free or Die IPA — IPA, 7% ABV.  West coast IPA brewed with Warrior hops, and finished with Columbus and Cascade.   Dry hopped with Amarillo, Ahtanum, Simcoe.  Malts include 2 Row Pale, and Imported Munich.  70 IBU’s.  Best selling beer in the 21st Amendment Pub.

Hell or High Watermelon — Wheat beer, 4.9% ABV.  Wheat beer, with secondary fermentation with fresh watermelon.  Uses Magnum hops, and 2 Row Pale and American Wheat malts.  The watermelon flavor is solely pureed watermelon. No extracts or syrups.  Yeast is a top fermenting ale yeast.  17 IBU’s

Monk’s Blood depicted in the image at the top will not be shipping immediately.  And be sad readers. It’s freaking delicious.  It’s a Belgian Dark Ale with… well, lets talk about it when it finally gets here.
