Sierra Nevada/ Dogfish Head Collaboration hits Atlanta

Life and LimbLife and Limb has arrived in Atlanta.  There is a lot to talk about with this particular beer.  First, the basics.  Life and limb is part of a 2 beer collaboration release between Sierra Nevada & Dogfish Head Breweries.  The doctrine behind this brew is to dedicate a release to beer drinkers, and beer lovers who support craft beer worldwide.

Life & Limb is born out a friendship between brewer Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada, and Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head.  (If you don’t know, Ken Grossman is a pioneer in the craft beer world.  Home brewer turned founder of Sierra Nevada in 1980.)  Many of the accomplishments of Ken have been an inspiration to Sam.  It is out of the friendship and adoration of each other, these beers are born.

The name Life and Limb is an homage to the American breweries that breathed LIFE in the tree of craft brewing, and the ever growing more diverse LIMBS of it.  L&L is a strong ale at 10% ABV with a unique list of ingredients.  In this collaboration, Sierra and Dogfish carefully thought out additions to this brew that reflect each brewhouse.    Estate barley from Sierra Nevada brewery in Chico, California.  Pure maple syrup  from the Calagione farm in Massachusetts.   Also, for the first time in craft beer, birch syrup from Alaska used for natural carbonation.  Yeast strains from both brew houses were combined to make a unique signature.  Life & Limb is made to cellar very well.  Sam Calagione even mentioned it would be great if one day his children and Ken Grossman’s children raised a glass of 2009 Life and Limb at a beer dinner years in the future.

A sister beer to Life & Limb is dubbed Limb and Life.  It is a lighter beer than its companion at 5% ABV.  Limb & Life is produced from left over sugars from the first run.  Throw in some American hops and you have a nice sessionable compliment to Life & Limb.  It is a draft only release, and no word yet on it for Atlanta.

Bottles of Life & Limb are available now @ Hop City.  22 oz — 9.99. (SOLD OUT!!!!!)

Draft opportunities will be posted ASAP.

Taste?  After a small taste of Life & Limb last night, I will leave you with this — there is a lot going on in that glass. So get a bottle and get tasting…

Introducing – Beer Here Brewery

Beer Here Brewery

Sneaking into Atlanta today are are couple of offerings from a little known Danish Brewery called “Beer Here.” Beer Here hasn’t been in the U.S. long — first launch in August of this year.  Since so little is known about this brewer, it’s arrival in Georgia isn’t with much pomp and circumstance.

Beer Here is the result of Danish brewer Christian Skovdal Andersen’s brewing adventures beginning in 2004.  Christian and partner started Olfabrikken Brewing, which translates to “The Beer Factory.”  Before long, Christian and his partner went their separate ways, allowing him to found Beer Here Brewery.

In this initial offering,  you will find 2 beers – Dark Hops, and Morke.

Dark Hops is an American Strong Ale, black and hoppy.  Beer Here brewed Dark Hops almost solely for the American market.  Dark Hops is brewed with  Maris Otter Malt, Brittish Malts, and sugar cane.  Hops include Zeus, and Saaz hops.  It weighs in at 8.5% ABV.  Dark Hops is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and can cellar 3-5 years.

“Dark Hops is a very black beer at 8.5% with one foot firmly planted in stout world and another in India Pale Ale universe.Despite the name, there is nothing covert in this beer is brewed in the finest British Maris Otter malt, roasted barley and juicy Zeus and Saaz hops.”– Christian Anderson

Morke is a Pumpernickel Porter.  Ingredients include water, barley, rye, spices, sugar, hops, yeast.  Morke is a little less alcoholic, at 7.5% ABV.

“The idea behind “Dark” has emerged from my desire to create a beer that has the same qualities as the dark, savory and sweet pumpernickel rye. It is brewed with a particular malted rye, dark sugar and fennel seed and only mild hops.- Christian Anderson

Beer Here’s Slogan?  “Do not waste your thirst.”

UPDATE – Bought the 1st bottles at Hop City.    Dark Hops – 6.99  Morke – 6.99

The Bruery

Atlanta! Meet , The Bruery. Launching today in Atlanta, The Bruery hails from Placentia, CA.

Founded out of the love of homebrewing, The Bruery basically started on a stove. Patrick Rue, his brother Chris and wife Rachel created an “amber” ale while Patrick was a first year law student. Over time the love of brewing couldn’t be held back any longer, and their life long goal was set.

The name “Bruery” is a meld of the word brewery with the family name “Rue.” All beers are unfiltered and unpasteurized. All carbonation is through bottle conditioning through secondary fermentation.

Sidebar – Primary fermentation is marked by the rapid release of carbon dioxide. Sugars are converted to alcohol and CO2. In secondary fermentation, yeast removes unwanted compounds like acetylaldehyde, diacetyl, and sulphur. (For those biology folks out there.) This is taking place in the bottle where it carbonates the beer. In some instances you will see the residual yeast sediment on the bottom of the bottle.

The Bruery seeks out unique ingredients in which to brew, creating new definitions of beer.

Now onto the beers. Hop City starting today is selling 3 beers from their lineup.

Saison Rue — 8.5% ABV, Belgian/French Farmhouse Ale. Malted Rye, spicy. Citrus hops, Wild Yeast. Brewed intermittently year round. Excellent fresh, and aged. $10.49
Orchard White — 5.7% ABV, Belgian Wit. Coriander, Citrus, Lavender. Rolled Oats. Fruit yeast strain. $7.49
Autumn Maple — 10%, ABV, Belgian Brown Ale. 17lbs yams per barrel. Spin off of Pumpkin style ales. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, & maple syrup. Fermented with Belgian yeast strain. $9.99

There are more on the way, but this is a great start. Welcome to Atlanta — The Bruery!
