Virtue Cider Officially Debuts

Greg Hall, formerly of Goose Island Brewing has officially debuted his newest project – Virtue Ciders.  The first offering -RedStreak is now available.

RedStreak is a proper English style draft cider. With its hazy lemon hue, scent of ripe apples and just a touch of oak, RedStreak has a crisp, tart finish that pairs perfectly with your favorite mature cheddar. First discovered in Herefordshire in the 1630s, the Redstreak bittersharp apple produced a cider so delicious it was deemed to be ‘fit for kings.’ Whether paired or on its own, RedStreak Cider is your next drink.

St. Julian Winery (Paw Paw, Michigan) produced the cider, a blend of apples from Michigan and Illinois.   There is a cider house build in planning, to be built in Michigan.

Look for two new cider varieties in the fall: Lapinette, & The Mitten.  Pics from the launch at Timeout Chicago.

Lucky Town Using Kickstarter To Bring Brewery To Beer Starved Mississippi

Lucky Town BrewingLucky Town Brewing is asking for public funding on Kickstarter to bring a new brewery to beer starved Mississippi. The brewery hopes to be based in Gluckstadt.

More on Lucky Town:
Lucky Town’s ultimate goal is to stay true to our home-brewing roots by producing unique, artisanal, handcrafted ales and lagers. We intend to offer at least four year round beers that will roll out in pairs, but we also will be releasing small batch brews throughout the year that will be available in smaller quantities. Small batching will allow us more freedom to experiment with ingredients not normally found in beer that you find in Mississippi, providing for an ever-evolving product range rather than a fixed seasonal schedule. Examples include the southern pit barbecue inspired stout called “Stout of the Rising Sun” which uses smoked grains combined with roasted jalapenos and Lucky Town’s unique take on a winter warmer called “What the Elf?” that has cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, orange peel, figs and vanilla in it to give it a wonderful holiday flavor. Along with these will be the small batch Kaizen Saison, an ever evolving beer used to explore new flavor profiles and push the limits of what beer can be. We will never shy away from using non-traditional ingredients. Expect plenty of things aged in unique barrels, including sour beers that will spend as much as 3 years in the barrel getting funky. Pipeworks Brewing Company Joins Chicago Beer Scene

This week Chicago welcomed its seventh microbrewery to the city, Pipeworks Brewing Company.  Pipeworks came to be when two friends working at Chicago’s famed West Lakeview Liquors, Beejay Olson and Gerrit Lewis, decided it was time to make this “pipe” dream a reality.  In 2009 Olson and Lewis began an apprenticeship in Belgium with De Struise where they were able to learn and hone their craft as they learned what it takes to run a brewery and create brewed masterpieces.  Upon their return, they raised over $40,000 through kickstarter.com to put their dreams into motion and several years later, they have brewed their first official batches.

Pipeworks Brewing Company brewed their first official batch this week after getting approval from the state of Illinois.  The first brew was a smoked porter.  Future releases include Glaucus – Barley Wine, Abduction – Imperial Stout, Last Kiss – Wee Heavy, Learning to Fly – Berliner Weisse, and Bottled Up – Baltic Porter.  All will be available at the brewery.

Elevation Beer Company Brings New Barrel Aged Beer To Colorado

Elevation Brewing LogoElevation Beer Company is set to start brewing at their new 7,400 square foot facility in Poncha Springs, CO the second week of February.  Founded by four friends, Carlin Walsh, Christian Koch, Sheila Bustamante, and Xandy Bustamante, Elevation won’t be your run of the mill brewery.  They will be an artesian microbrewery that focuses on seasonal barrel aged beers brewed on a 15 barrel system.  Head brewer Christian Koch says “We are focusing on brewing the type of beers we love to drink”.

Elevation’s beers will be based on three different series named for the ski slope rating system: Blue Square – easy drinking beers, Black Diamond – bold beers, Double Black Diamond – adventurous barrel aged beers.  Blue Square series beers will only be available on draft.  Both Black Diamond and Double Black Diamond beers will be available on draft and in 750ml corked and caged champagne style bottles.

On their first releases, Koch says:

“Our first Black Diamond Series release, will be Apis IV, a Belgian Quadrupel made with caramelized honey, and our first Double Black Diamond Series release, will be Signal De Botrange, a farmhouse ale brewed with brettanomyces and aged in Napa Valley Chardonnay barrels. We are brewing beers for beer geeks just like us.”

Look for Elevation Beer Company’s beers in the state of Colorado.

Due South Brewing Gets Government OK

Due South Brewing has received official approval from the Tax and Trade Bureau to operate as a brewery.  (Last week) What does that mean? Beer production baby!

We’ve got 95% of our equipment delivered with a few things yet to show up.  Our glycol chiller is built and waiting on a truck to pick it up in Seattle, our four 300 gallon serving tanks for the taproom are being finished up in Portland, our 375 kegs are about to be loaded on a big truck in LA and hopefully we can get this guy to stop by Escondido and pick up our keg washer.  Oh yeah, and the Canadians are shipping our mill tomorrow.  The brewhouse, fermenters, brite tanks, and other equipment is in our possession.

Due South took possession of their property in Boynton Beach, Florida in October, 2011.  Grand opening is planned for February/March, 2012.  Expect the first Due South brews to show up at the Jupiter Craft Beer Fest in 1/28/12.
