Tocobaga Winner Chosen

Recently Cigar City Brewing held a contest for artists submit artwork for Tocobaga being released in bottles this month for the first time.  Over 60 artists submitted their work through Hampton Arts Management, and the field was narrowed down to 10.  On June 1st, the winner was chosen.

Above is Eric Swanson’s winning entry.  The finalist’s entries are currently on display at the tap room in Tampa throughout the month of June.  Tocobaga is currently flowing in the tap room – $5 dollars a glass, $9 for a 750ml bottle.

The Tocobaga Indians lived off of the bounty of Tampa Bay for hundreds of years before being discovered by the Spanish in the 1500’s.  They were potters, tool makers and the only Florida native Indians to grow corn.  The large platform mounds they built are still with us today, with one of the largest found in Philippe Park in Safety Harbor, Florida.  Climb to the top, and with a little imagination, you can see Tamp as they did.  Today Cigar City Brewing honors this native spirit with Tocobaga Red Ale.  A deep-colored amber ale with an abundance of hop flavor and aromas balanced with a subtle caramel malt sweetness in the finish.  We believe if the Tocobaga were here today they would join us in raising a glass to the bay we call home

About Tocobaga:

A hoppy red ale with citra hops.  The brainchild of brewer Tim Ogden

Ex Gratia Benefits Alex’s Lemonade Stand

Another feel good beer story. Stoudt’s Brewing has created “Ex Gratia” benefitting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).  The foundation began with Alex, a little girl diagnosed with childhood cancer.  She created a lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money to give to doctors to help find a cure for children with cancer.  One day she made a whopping $2000 dollars.  Sadly, Alex lost the fight in 2004 at the age of 8.

The foundation is still active, helping raise money for cancer research.  Enter Stoudt’s.  Jodi Stoudt teamed up with Osteria in Philadelphia.  Osteria provided Lemon marmalade, which Stoudts infused into the brewing of Karnival Kolsch.   The result is a light, sweet, lemony beer great for summer, great for the cause.

The kegs will be distributed around Philadelphia.  All proceeds be donated to ALSF.  A pint will sell for about 8 dollars a glass; each keg raising about $1000 dollars.  Check out the video about the beer. Ex Gratia is latin for “Of Favor.”  (Love Jodi’s hat she’s wearing in the video BTW.)

Sneak Peak: Savor Flowers Bottle

Dogfish Head have the world a sneak preview of the “Savor Flowers” bottle today.  Flowers is a collaboration brew between Sam Adams’s Jim Koch & Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head.   Flowers will only be available at Savor in Washington D.C. in June.

Savor Flowers is brewed with dried red & white rose petals, plus 2 other kinds of roses.  The hops are experimental, known only by a name “369.”  As if the beer needed to be a bit MORE unique, this floral offering is aged in a special whiskey barrel dear to Jim Koch, one he aged a triple bock in back in the ’90s.

Total production is limited to 30 barrels.

10% ABV

Want More Bitter American? Perhaps All The Time?

21st Amendment Brewing recently released Bitter American, a session style pale ale.  It is incredibly tasty, easy drinking and the best part – low in alcohol.  Bitter American is all but gone from shelves.

Furthermore, a lot of drinkers seem to want Bitter to be a year round beer.  A beer is evolving in the U.S. the alcohol in beer seems to be getting higher and higher.  Not complaining, but for some (me included) it’s great to find a beer with great flavor that is lower in alcohol.  21A all but admitted that they are making plans to make Bitter American year round – as evidenced by this tweet.

In other just cool stuff, check out the new 21A Can displays for retail stores @21apdxguru>
