Your Beer Bottles, Now For Drinking (Again)

Your Beer Bottles, Now For Drinking (Again)

A California company is finding new life for your beer bottes.  Bottlehood transforms bottles into home goods & glassware.

You don’t have to be tree hugger to know that glass doesn’t break down so fast after the beer is gone.  Close to 4,000 years to break down actually.  Recycling is of course the best option.  But that doesn’t mean there isn’t another use for your bottles.  Bottlehood is dedicated to finding secondary uses for glass. They safely cut the tops of the empty beer bottles, and smooths out the rim to make it safe for drinking.

These “re-purposed” glasses are available for online ordering.  In addition to beer bottles, Bottlehood cuts wine & liquor bottles. Just what every beer geek needs. <Bottlehood>

Wisconsin Bar Holds Beer Protest

Wisconsin Bar Holds Beer Protest

There is a power play occurring in Wisconsin right now, between the big guys and the little guys.  A provision was inserted into the states budget (pushed by Miller-Coors) that will essentially prevent growth of craft breweries in the state.  In a few cases, could put breweries out of business.

As a way of protesting the the budget proposal, The Firehouse Bar in Eau Claire, Wisconsin held a “dumping” event.  If you ordered a “big beer” product and dumped it out, you received a craft beer for free. It continued until no more Miller-Coors products were left at the bar.

International IPA Day, August 4th

IPA Day

Social media meets hops for IPA Day – August 4th, 2011.  Below are details for the event…

Greetings Craft Beer Drinkers! Welcome to International #IPADay — the world’s largest celebration of craft beer.

International #IPADay is a grassroots movement created to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers, and brewers worldwide, using social media as the common arena for connecting the conversation together.

On Thursday August 4th, craft beer drinkers across the social sphere and across the globe will raise pints in a collective toast to one of craft beer’s most iconic styles: the India Pale Ale. This celebrated style represents the pinnacle of brewing innovation with its broad spectrum of diverse brands, subcategories, and regional flavor variations — making it the perfect style to galvanize the craft beer’s social voice.

To participate, share your photos, videos, blog posts, tasting notes, recipes, thoughts with the world on Twitter Facebook, YouTube, WordPress, RateBeer, Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp, Untappd or any other social media platforms you may use. Use the hashtag #IPADay in all of your posts and then see what others are saying by searching the hashtag on google, twitter or other social media resources.

Participants are also encouraged to organize “real-life” #IPADay events your local brewery, brewpub, restaurant, bar, home, or office. Share your events on the official #IPADay forum at RateBeer.com.

A Victory For Ice Cream (And Root Beer)

Victory Ice Cream

Victory Brewing has been selling ice cream at the brewpub for years.  Now, the brewery has just started offering 3 flavors of ice cream, based off of 3 of their beers for sale “to go.”  The ice cream was created by Matt Krueger, the manager of Victory’s restaurant.  His idea comes straight from the brewing process itself.  Wort, the sugary liquid that is the base for creating beer is harvest and cooked down.  Each of the ice cream offerings use the wort from each of the beers.

The 3 varieties:

Triple Monkey – banana ice cream with peanuts & caramel.  Wort from Golden Monkey.

Hopped Up Devil – Cinnamon ice cream, cayenne and chocolate covered coffee beans.  Work from Hop Devil.

Storm King Crunch – Chocolate ice cream, malted milk balls.  Wort from Storm King.

The ice cream is only available at the pub in Downingtown (for now.) The ice cream is non alcoholic of course. Pints retail for $4.24 plus tax, while quarts are $7.99 plus tax.  <CBSPhilly>

ROOTBEER!
The brewery has just made their root beer available to go too.  (And the timing couldn’t be more perfect for those who love ice cream floats.)  Victory has been brewing its own root beer since 1997, but until May it was only available on draft in the brewpub. Now visitors to the Downingtown brewpub and retail shop can take the classic soda home, in cases or six-packs.

“Ron and I loved root beer growing up,” owner Bill Covaleski said, “so when we started Victory Brewing Company, we knew we’d be brewing root beer as well as traditional beer. Thanks to our restaurant we’ve always been able to focus on appealing to people of all ages, not just the 21 and over crowd. Bottling root beer so everyone can enjoy a cold Victory at home just made sense.”

Victory Root Beer currently can be purchased in the Victory retail shop for $5.99 per six-pack and $22.99 per case.

Dogfish Collaborates With Shorts (Brewing)

Dogfish Head & Shorts

Dogfish Head & Shorts Brewing are collaborating.  Sam of DFH and Joe of Short’s have been friends for years.  Yesterday Shorts announced via their blog, details of the collaboration.  Here’s the quick rundown.  The beer would have ingredients from each of the brewery’s home states.   You know Dogfish. The ingredient are to be “unusual” aka off-centered.  The beer will be brewed in Bellaire, MI at Short’s.

Here’s what they came up with.  A Baltic porter, featuring beach plums (Delaware), red popcorn (Indiana by way of Three Floyds Brewing), and horehound from Michigan.  Horehound for you botanists is called Lamiaceae or Labiatae and is in the mint family.  (Subsets= white horehound & black horehound.)  Where Three Floyds got involved with the ingredients is a mystery to me.

The beer has yet to be named, but will have a tap debut at Shorts on July 4th.  Around Michigan? Here are some deets:
Short’s is releasing the test batch of this beer at its Pub on July 4th. Then, on Wednesday July 6th, Joe and Sam will host a public reception at the lobby of the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa from 5-6:30 p.m. That evening, Sam will dine with the Short’s crew at the Aerie Restaurant on the 16th floor of the tower. Special kegs of Short’s and Dogfish Head will be featured at Aerie that night (a tap takeover to remember!). Short’s Brew will also be featured at Jack’s Sports Bar, which is located near the hotel lobby.

Bottles will be available though Shorts distribution network.
