New LG Fridge Chills Your Beer With Icy Jet Engine Blasts

You ever had to chill a beer quickly because you couldn’t wait for it to chill? Soon the days of ice baths and exploded beer in the freezer will be gone with needed addition to your fridge.

Making a debut at CES this week is LG’s new Blast Chiller.  This awesome little piece of modern machinery can chill your favorite fermented beverage in 5 minutes.  How? Ice cold air at the speed of a jet engine.  I didn’t mistype.  A speed of a freaking jet engine.  Those that have a higher than average of physics and thermodynamics might ask – “What about ice crystals?”  The answer is swirled air.  The technology is derived from LG air conditioners with the same technology.  No pricing was mentioned, but  a comparable LG refrigerator runs about $2,800. [DigitalTrends]

p.s. I’m sure it will chill soda too.  You know. If you’re into that sort of thing.

A Week In The Life Of Dogfish’s Lead Brewer

Ben Potts is Dogfish Head Brewing’s lead brewer.  He started at the brewery in late 2011.  The Food Informants, columnists for the Huffington Post, spent a week with Ben.   Those who thing being a brewer is all glamour and banana sandwiches.   Scut work, emails, and technical work abound.  Ben walks the Informants through the brewing of Low Rider (his first beer at the put) that just debuted on tap at the brewpub, and the BeerAdvocate brew – headed for the Extreme Beer Fest in Boston this year.

1:50pm: I finish cleaning the tap line that had been soaking and rinse it thoroughly. I taste the water coming out to check and see if any flavor from the previous beer carried over. Tastes fine. I switch the Tweason’ale over to that freshly cleaned line and get ready to tap and test the Low Rider.
2:50pm: Finally the Low Rider is run through the tap. The beer cascades beautifully as it flows from the tap into the pint glass. My first brew is a success! Nice and malty, with a subtle herbal hoppiness and incredibly silky/creamy mouth feel due to the nitrogenization. I couldn’t be more excited! A real milestone, my first Dogfish beer!

T’weasonale is a gluten free beer arriving this month. [HuffPo]

Whisky In A Can? Hell Yeah

Beer won’t be the only thing you will be able to get in a can soon.  How about whiskey? Part of me thinks it’s a joke, but its sooo not.  Scottish Spirits will be bringing $5 cans of 80-proof scotch whisky stateside this year.

Our “Scotch in a Can” has eight shots (12 ounces) of Scotch straight out of the can − which is indeed a recyclable one. Keeping qualitative and quantitative standards intact, Scotch in a Can maintains high quality without compromising the tone of the beverage.

The mentality behind this move is pretty much the same as you see in beer.  People want to take their favorite beverage to places where glass is verboten. (beaches, parks, etc.)  The packaging is cheaper to import and transport and guards the beverage from light.  First thing that came to my head? Once you open the can, you are pretty much committed to 8 shots of 40% abv whisky.  There’s no resealing it.    Scottish Spirits plans on shipping an attachment to help reseal sometime after the U.S. launch.

The blended scotch whisky is single grain, and matured in 3 years in oak casks in Scotland.

Arrival: February, 2012.  $5 a can.

North Korea’s Brewery Via Satellite

Telegraph UK published pics of North Korea under Kim Jong Il.  This is a satellite image of the country’s only purported brewery – Taedongang.

Other images taken above North Korea include the Taedongang brewery on the outskirts of Pyongyang. The brewery, originally from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, was reconstructed outside the North Korean capital after being shipped thousands of miles in 2000. The structure, renamed Taedongang, was dismantled in Britain by engineers and within 18 months was up and running, producing beer for the small nation. The beer is said to have a “full flavour” but is often brewed using chaff as some of the key ingredients are hard to find

Kim Jong apparently was entertaining the idea of building a brewery in Russia.  Why weren’t there any Kim Jong Il beer commercials? [TelegraphUK]
